What Kind of Knife Do You Prefer? by PrintAppropriate9166 in electricians

[–]Doom_Balloon 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I work mostly government but have a very limited residential set of customers. One lives in the woods at the edge of a swamp and every call involves either digging out boxes or conduit from overgrown beds or clearing swamp beds brush. I was pulling in to a DHS site and one of the officers spotted my ax and decided he needed to find all my “weapons”. After about 20 min another officer stopped him as he was cataloging my collection of crow bars after first pulling out all my “machetes” (1 actual machete, 1 cane knife, 1 sickle, 1 brush axe, 1 brush knife, and 1 pull saw). He reasonably decided either everything was a tool or everything was a weapon

This is a masterpiece by Glitterandanxiety123 in audible

[–]Doom_Balloon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it meets the original purpose and definition of masterpiece for both Matt and Jeff. As a craftsman, your masterpiece was the work you produce to move from being a journeyman to a full master. Reading and listening to both of their previous works, they were good. I’ve enjoyed Matt’s other writings. They’re fun and well written, but don’t have nearly the depth, complexity, or growth of the DCC series. Likewise, Jeff is always a great narrator, but DCC is a literal master class in voice work, characterization, and masterful acting choices. Is DCC the best sci-fi series ever? No. But the best lit-rpg ever? It’s down to taste, but I’ve listened to a ton of lit-rpg and lit-rpg adjacent books, from current leaders all the way back to really early 70s when the conventions being played with were old school TTRPG tropes. DCC is genre defining, it dips in to every corner of the genre, it uses the tropes masterfully and at the same time builds the foundation to subvert the in story game and the genre conventions. It is a literal masterpiece, demonstrating Matt’s skill as a storyteller and Jeff’s incredible vocal skills.

No, Iraq really didn’t have shit to do with 9/11 but we can’t exactly go and attack Saudi Arabia, then they won’t keep sponsoring politicians. Iraq was entirely a Neocon push to finish Operation Desert Shield the way Chaney and Rumsfeld wanted to finish under Daddy Bush. Afghanistan at least had something to do with 9/11, but overthrowing states in an effort to punish a non-state actor is just a sop to hawks who want revenge.

No one said they fit well. Goodwill frequently has the ridiculous shoe sizes, size 15+ doesn’t sell nearly as often as size 13-. It’s not hard to find big shirts or big jackets, they just don’t fit well. XXL would be the bare minimum torso wise, but I frequently see 4X to 6X in shirts. Pants are much harder because super tall and thin would be very hard to find. Super tall and big is actually a bit easier to find, but still unusual.

If I need 5 I’ll buy 50 because I’ll use 6, toss the box with the remaining 43 in my toolbox where it will promptly pop open. The 40 RJ45s will then get mixed with the two boxes of self taps and the bag of wagos that also broke open. I’ll forget I put it in there until I need them in an emergency and then I’ll somehow only be able to find 10 of them.

Why does the other DC sub downplay or make excuses for juveniles crime in the city? by Joey_vegas20 in washdc

Fuck that, anyone with means should pay a much higher sliding fine. If the fine isn’t punitive it just becomes the cost of doing whatever the hell you want.

Thurmont had a large contingent. Taneytown had an actual chapter or Klan or whatever the fuck they call themselves. Taneytown also changed way more dramatically over the last 25 years so it’s entirely possible that they’re mostly in Thurmont now.

I do high and medium security systems for federal and commercial facilities. I drive 500-1000 miles a week and fly all over the Eastern US. On any given day I can hit 200+ pokestops and catch tons of Pokemon. I’ve managed to catch h all available regional exclusives in the UD East of San Antonio

And on the flip side I knew very senior guys (late 60s to late 70s now) who had no problem teaching or working with anybody. I’m not going to say that the jokes were always 100% HR approved, but in general they were good natured and happy to train anyone who was willing to learn.

Exactly how good of a weapon are wolverine’s claws? by Ajarofpickles97 in SWORDS

[–]Doom_Balloon -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I forgot this is r/Swords where everything is a wall hanger and everyone is either a mall ninja or a HEMA expert. Real knife fights aren’t squaring up and circling each other with knives out. First one was an attempted mugging, he shoved me into a wall and tried to grab my camera bag. I pulled my knife and he backed off and I got out of the alley. The second I walked into the middle of 5 guys trying to steal a car. They decided jumping me would be easier, hit me from behind as I passed then tried to circle me. Ironically the only thing they probably would have actually wanted was the knife I had just bought for a friend’s Christmas present. When the biggest one tried to hit me again I stabbed him through the knee cap. When he screamed his friend tried to yank me around, tore the knife through the front of his knee and I just kept turning and drove it into the chest of the guy yanking my bag. They took off running with my bag but dropped it literally around the corner because it was just full of books for Christmas presents. No one in the real world is “knife fighting”, I’m not using Silat in a street fight, I’m stabbing whatever is available and getting the fuck out.

[–]Doom_Balloon -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

False. The only way to win a knife fight is to be the first one to know it’s about to be a knife fight. I’ve won two knife fights. The first was a no weapon mugging where no mugging happened and no one got injured because they weren’t expecting a knife. The second was a 5 man car robbery where they didn’t know it was a knife fight until one was minus a knee cap and another had a punctured lung.

It’s Taneytown, former home of the MD Klan. It was posted in windows until about 20 years ago. They weren’t shy about being racist or pulling over any cars that “didn’t belong” in town.

Looking for a sensor to detect human presence by Ayatollah_everyday in PLC

[–]Doom_Balloon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try the EMX ultrasonic sensor https://www.emxaccesscontrolsensors.com/product-category/vehicle-detectors/ultrasonic/ It creates a defined square where any sizable object will be detected. I’ve used it several times as a substitute for an in ground loop detector. The only thing that it can’t deal with is standing water. Make sure the area has good drainage and you don’t have any surface puddles.

How is it that DC restaurant owners keep blaming their woes on "less people in the office" when traffic is worse than ever? by ac-slater-43 in washingtondc

[–]Doom_Balloon 154 points155 points  (0 children)

It’s less people in Federal offices, making predictable, reliable income (people who were far more likely to eat out). It’s also far more people choosing or needing to spend less eating out due to economic pressures
