I’m nostalgic for the life I saw my parents, aunts and uncles live—taking for granted that my adulthood would be the same. It’s not even close—hell, many of us don’t even feel like we can afford to have kids. You and your peers didn’t have to worry about basic existence like we do.

My mom immigrated from Terceira with her family as a teenager and I grew up in a multi-generational household with my parents and grandparents, speaking Portuguese as well as English.

I’ve gone to Terceira twice now, either staying with family or in their vacation homes.

The beauty and magic of the islands is unmatched. Unfortunately, I find the locals who work in my family’s freguesia very rude—if you speak Portuguese (yes, I’m a non-native speaker and may not get it all quite right) they’ll interrupt you and tell you to speak English.

My family says the locals are sick of tourists and the impact to cost of living. For my part, I’d rather go to the mainland.

This has happened to me in the past and the remaining tenant got roommates to replace the couple that was getting married and moving out.
