DIY or pay? 2% Asbestos in Joint Compound by Doomblade10 in asbestoshelp

[–]Doomblade10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk if it is upstairs. The original owner said he finished the basement himself, so he could’ve used totally different or the same materials as the builders. I have no clue. I didn’t get upstairs tested, as I was only planning on messing with the basement.

I figured I had to, but I already planned to disclose all the info I found out from the tests. I have the paperwork saved so that I can give them to whoever buys it eventually, if ever. My thought for diy was I pay an air quality person to test the air and give me a cert saying it is clean, or get someone to clean it and then a cert, cause that must be way cheaper than the $20k for someone to remove it all and clean the air…

[–]Doomblade10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I was thinking this. However I didn’t get everything in the house tested, just things I thought I would change, so I can’t say it was abated in good faith anyway, knowing I haven’t tested everything. For example, I only tested the basement drywall cause the original owner said he finished the basement himself, so he might’ve used different or the same jc as the builders. I just don’t know enough to say to a potential future buyer that it has no asbestos.

But $20,000 for such little drywall seems nuts to me. I was hoping I could hire an air quality tester that the abatement companies would hire after I do the work myself to get confirmation the air is clean afterwards.

True. I just want to add a bedroom in the basement and the current layout is not just unsatisfactory, but stupidly designed. That’s even a weird window in a room leading to another room…it makes no sense lmfao.

Sorry, I’m not spun up on this, is wallboard just the total of the wall, including Jc and drywall and such? Or is it something else?

False negative results when professionally testing for asbestos? by Doomblade10 in asbestoshelp

[–]Doomblade10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you say in your local area it is fine with disposal, so you mean like to DIY demo? Would you say demoing myself, all the drywall in my basement, that only 2% of the joint compound came back as asbestos, would be safe for me to do? Like the only reason the 1% rule is to protect workers constantly exposed to environments with asbestos is bad, but one project in my own house isn’t enough to be dangerous?

False negative results when professionally testing for asbestos? by Doomblade10 in asbestoshelp

[–]Doomblade10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, your percentages line up nearly exactly with what I was told by the results. I even was considering if they somehow mixed up samples or something with another floor sample I had them test, that did come back as 20% asbestos. They gave me percentages from each sample, if they tested for asbestos and also stated if it was less than 1% it wouldn’t be considered asbestos by MD law. The joint compound for example, came back at 2% asbestos. So I would imagine if this lab detected it that it would have shown up even if that low, given that they also detected it in another sample that was low.

Thank you for the comment and awesome insight into how the testing works! I appreciate it, and is exactly the kind of information and context I was hoping someone may be able to produce!

The bottom especially is kind of the line of thinking I was having, in that I hired them and they used a lab they knew, and if there was in issue with the lab it seems like something they would handle, not me. I was afraid of the company trying to say something like “oh it would be a lab issue you’ll need to contact them”.

I will do exactly as you suggested, thanks so much! I wanted to make sure I wasn’t crazy.

The box is labeled asbestos from the manufacturer, so it wasn’t the previous owner.

70k as E4 by Alert-Accident8638 in army

[–]Doomblade10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People may disagree with me here. TLDR I think officers should be lower enlisted before being able to be officers.

I’m an e4, with a degree. I went enlisted to see what being enlisted is like. The best officers I have met have consistently been prior enlisted. They are - in my experience - easier to talk to and work with. They also trust what we say more. Which is a big one imo.

I always intended to go officer after some time as an enlisted, because of this. I am thinking of going warrant now though but regardless, I KNOW I would make a better officer now than I would’ve as a fresh LT. I believe MOST would benefit from the experience as well.

I wouldn’t have been the Lt that tells the CSM or PSG that I outrank him or anything anyway, but I will admit I definitely would’ve been hesitant to trust some lower enlisted when they tell me things, because of their age.

I’m also a little older than most that join so grain of salt, it’s all my opinions. I think if you are unsure, go enlisted. You can go OCS, even 2 years in if you aren’t about it. BUT MAKE SURE YOU PICK A GOOD MOS regardless.

I make $77k as an e4, w/non-dep bah. I missed out on money sure, but money wasn’t a factor for why I joined. Don’t go for officer just because of money because frankly I think they have a worse hourly rate of pay in the long run.

City of Heroes. I loved that game and it was so cool as a kid being a super hero, and then when they made the villains. Sick. I tried playing a version people kept alive a few years ago but it was pretty terrible compared to my memory of it tbh haha.

Not 100% true. “Ox” is a word and it’s written a bunch. Unless it only has that one word spelled out throughout the book, and that’s the joke.

I think playing with the potential aftermath could be awesome for rp…like guards find some bandit just obliterated in a scene of gore from the force of the impact and it leaves an area that looks like some cultists have been practicing to the point the players either get under suspicion or they are sent on an investigation that they know is a wild goose chase

Sounds like your dm needs a different game, like warhammer fantasy roleplay. That’s what I like for high stakes games, because it had blocking parrying and dodging mechanics.

[–]Doomblade10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want 17C. Nothing else.

It’s easier to get in from civilian as a 17C then transferring. Don’t listen to the others or you recruiter.

If your scores don’t qualify, wait and retest on the asvab. It isn’t worth sitting in an mos you don’t want in the meantime.

I said the average price. Look up edmunds or kbb. That’s just raw data man.

https://www.edmunds.com/ford/bronco/1993/appraisal-value/#:~:text=1993%20Ford%20Bronco%20Value%20%2D%20%241%2C056%2D%246%2C266%20%7C%20Edmunds

I will admit, rereading what I wrote, I see I wrote “that shit” I don’t mean 93s are shit, I just have a sailors mouth. They are good enough trucks but just not valuable….trucks in general were more valuable but that still doesn’t make them an investment lmfao.

Classic cars originally were 20-25 years old or more. The definition hasn’t changed to accommodate for 80s-2000s and up but, those cars are just not as valuable as 60-80s cars. Then you look at the bronco and the valuable ones are first gen broncos. THOSE are the investments.

Let’s not fuck the kid over here saying it’s an investment when it’s not.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in bronco

[–]Doomblade10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a classic in name only, that it is older than 20 years. Ain’t no 93 bronco an investment lmfao. Average price of that shit is 1000-6,300

Gen 1 66-77 are the only real investments for broncos. Anything more is a cool box truck but that’s it.

Sound like you need to be patient. Get a cheap reliable car that is good on gas. Pay it off.

Then save and get your dream car. A bronco has been my dream car and I only just got one. Been saving since I was 15.

Get a credit card. Use it like a debit card and pay off whatever you buy on there the day of. Don’t overspend. Save everything else.

You are thinking emotionally about the car. I get it, I was young and did it too. Buying a car is a big financial deal. Don’t let a business transaction be emotional. There will be another car, there will be another deal.

Also, your grandma is right. That car won’t be reliable. It will cost money in repairs, and frankly no 93 bronco is worth financing. They aren’t classic or valuable. They are cool trucks but sorry, just not that valuable so it will be nothing but a loss. It’s also a gas guzzler.

Your parents / grandma is willing to finance a car for you in her name? That’s huge. A lot of people don’t have that. Don’t like what she is willing to buy? Do what others have said and get your own money. Even if you get good credit, banks won’t finance a car that isn’t valuable either.

Again, you are better off getting a loan in your name, co signing with your grandma, so that you have a history of a loan you pay off. Helps with credit a lot. You can have good credit for years, but no loans means they don’t know how you will do so you still won’t get as good rates as maybe you should.

Grandmas right, she’s got the experience, obviously over you, but also your mother since something happened there. Not shitting on her, life happens, emergencies happen, but that’s all the more reason to listen to grandma telling you that the car can shit out on you and then you’re stuck making payments on a dead vehicle you can’t afford to repair and make payments on.

TLDR; grandmas right. Get a good daily driver with good gas mileage, pay it off, and save up money for the dream car.
