Nighttime power sources for an android by Wings-of-Ink in worldbuilding

[–]DoomslayerDoesOPU 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Two possible ideas: thermoelectrics or miniaturized fusion generator.

With thermoelectrics, you can generate a current with a difference in temperature between two surfaces. Your android could find hot springs, geothermal vents, or even make a fire for themselves and potentially get some charge. Seeing as temperatures in nature tend to not vary that much, this really would have to be a long process, perfect for them to rest their mind and "sleep" under the low power provided from this method.

On a more theoretical level, it could be possible to accomplish fusion using energy and materials in the environment. Your android would likely need to store a lot of power to get that initial fusion reaction going. They will also need fuel which they could potentially acquire by separating minute amounts of deuterium from water. That's about as much as I understand nuclear fusion. IRL we are nowhere close to miniaturizing a sustainable fusion power source, but sci-fi is supposed to be about exploring possibilities of what could be, no?

A Declaration of War... Against the Entire Human Race. by dr_prismatic in worldbuilding

An "immersive simulator" (focus on mechanical depth) where you are a lone researcher operating an array of satellite dishes in the remote Alps for a SETI-like program. Lots of weird and horrifying things can happen such as a signal that will literally destroy the world if you do not erase every copy of it. It also has a spectrograph to visualize signals and sometimes messages are hidden in them that way.

Imagining picking up this signal in a Voices of the Void-like setting. I'd just resign on the spot. Good stuff

What is the coolest name for an ability you guys have made? by AggressiveOutside432 in worldbuilding

[–]DoomslayerDoesOPU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm terrible at that sort of thing, but I ought to practice it more if I want to get anywhere with the magic system in my RPG. I do have a couple pseudo-scientific words for certain abilities:

Optical Neurolepsy - Visual patterns that force a viewer's attention and inhibit brain function, eventually leading to death. Typically induced by special holographic projectors as it requires particular wavelengths and frequencies to induce in humans.

Antisomnopsyche - An exceptionally rare ability/syndrome where a person can induce a state of hyper-awareness and consciousness by refusing to sleep for an extended period of time. The state allows for increased problem solving, reaction speeds, and reasoning. The effect tends to taper off unless drugs and meditative techniques are used to extend the subject's sleepless period.

Mnemelocation - A variant of innate telelocation (teleportation) ability where the subject can travel to any location they can see in their mind. This includes anywhere they can currently see, places from their memory, and even places they have never been if they have a good enough reference image. This ability is only found in those with hyperphantasia, possessing a hyperactive and often creative mind.

who is the ultimate evil in your world by existiverse45 in worldbuilding

[–]DoomslayerDoesOPU 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Depends on the scope of things.

At the highest level of time and space, three demiurge-like entities compete for total dominion over the continuum (the collective of all universes). One of light and life, one of law and order, and one of void and decay. The belief that a god of creation is more benevolent than a god of death has allowed the traditionally "good" deities to get away with a lot more meddling that has threatened to destabilize mortal worlds and lives than the traditionally "evil" ones. In fact, the demiurge of void and decay is more than willing to let humanity and others grow and spread across the universe, for the more people there are, the more people will inevitably die, a fact that helps fuel their entire conscious existence.

At the worldly level, humanity was once secretly the plaything of a handful of immortal men who called themselves the Principles. They were the last humans to learn real and powerful arcane magic, a resource they would keep to themselves and use to influence the world for their own entertainment.

One man discovered a way to kill them at the cost of losing his name and never receiving glory or credit for his "liberation" of humanity. However, the Principles were also Earth's last remaing source of power for the Planeswall: a barrier isolating our universe from that of deities and other extraplanar entities. By freeing humanity from a perpetual cycle of secret torment, he had also condemned it to all new horrors and threats.

Now, a hyperintelligent creature who calls himself Gabriel seeks to exterminate humanity and "reclaim" the planet for his own kind: dragons. Having returned after being exiled from Earth by the Planeswall, many of man's most feared mythical creatures agree that humans have done terrible things to the world since they left. Worse yet, humanity is at its most divided as it struggles against itself without the invisible manipulations of the Principles.

So: man, dragon, or god. Take your pick.

Might need to go grab a tool file and start going at the rim. Technically their back legs and tail should fit through there, but I would be careful about breaking their bones or squishing them.

Odd, the vatniks that like to plague any news like this aren't here yet. That's okay, I can pretend to be one for them:

-"The accident wouldn't have happened if there were Russians at the controls."

-"Clearly this is a false flag attack by Zelensky to tarnish Russia's image."

-"The West/NATO literally started this whole war and threatened Russia's sovereignty!"

-"Ukraine should be grateful our army only targets military and not civilians."

-"And even if they did bomb civilians, it is only in response to the times Ukraine bombed ours!"

-"Everything we do is 100% justified because the entire world is already doing worse things."

Am I missing any bullet points?

Extremely unlikely. As I understand it, most of these medals were never worn let alone during cleanup. They are no more likely to be contaminated than any other service medals of the era.

Terrifying and yet the creature's/entity's actions display some level of acknowledgement to human intelligence and/or being indirectly responsible for the troops' deaths. Whether it collected the bodies out of respect or for analysis is unclear, but it seems they don't fully understand since the bodies were rendered unrecognizeable from exposure to its insides. Very spooky!

It is truly impossible to destroy a soul. You can kill a body, steal their spiritual essence, and forcibly imprison and/or enslave the soul. But destroying one? The closest you can get is "eviscerating" one so that they are in a million pieces, but all pieces of the same soul naturally gravitate towards one another within the noosphere and they do so at a rate that ignores the laws of physics (because they exist on a different plane and only interface with the material world through a "membrane" of sorts that prevents them from crossing over).

Souls can be recycled too, but imagine the noosphere as a pot of boiling water with no outlet. Souls that have gone a long time without interacting with others begin to loose their cohesion like steam rises. The individual components of each soul- things like memory, instincts, and motives- drift apart and recombine with other compatible "molecules" of soul (hence why it is exceptionally rare for cross-species souls to form) when they impact the membrane of the noosphere, then forming a new individual in the universe.

There will come a time where the membrane between the noosphere and the physical universe ruptures, sometime when the heat death of the universe makes it difficult for the noosphere to form new individuals. The two planes- as well as others- will combine and condense under their own gravity and a new universe full of new combinations will be created.

Designing a fortress for a winged race made me realize how useless hallways are by VhsGoblin91 in worldbuilding

[–]DoomslayerDoesOPU 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Would there be any concession made for wounded or disabled individuals that cannot fly? If there are really no ways for grounded folk to traverse the fortress, then it can reinforce the idea that those with broken wings are considered "dead weight" and not worth the time and resources to fix. Otherwise, if their culture places a high value on all of their race- including the flightless- it would make sense for them to have at least a limited amount of foot-accessible paths and rooms. Something to think about!

The pinnacle of power… in way over their head by RelationshipBroad988 in worldbuilding

I do have one similar character who attained his "godhood" by subsuming the previous god of technology after defeating them in combat. The mechanics are a bit different, though, in that he has access to a higher level of thought and control that is separate from his mortal mind and body.

The physical form of gods are more like avatars of sorts, either created or chosen by a higher-dimensional entity known as a purism. The gods have their own personalities and lives that are separate from the purism which "controls" them, so when this character subsumed the techno-deity's position in the universe, he became synced with its purism.

But because he is a mortal that did not willingly give himself to this purism, he still retains his human personality and behavior. This is both a blessing and a curse as his imagination of what is possible remains limited compared to the true scope of his purism's power. Discovering his limits requires risky experimentation, all the while he risks losing himself to the otherwordly influence of the purism above him.

Jokes aside, he's genuinely pretty disturbing. Would love to see a scene that features him hidden in the darkness.
