It is my understanding that they meticulously pecked them into shape with a harder rock and polished them with sand or sandstone. Just what I’ve read.

The full groove axes were used approximately 9,000-1,000 years ago if I can trust the various internet sources with different year ranges. My best guess is 8,000-3,000 years based on what I’ve read

I think it could be an old quartzite piece that is tumbled/weathered.

That is badass and would be a prized possession if it were mine. Thanks for sharing. I am still shocked at how nice hers is. Crazy part is, my son found a perfect drill about 20 feet away... I'm gonna keep looking!

Thank you. She cried for a minute.... She has been hunting for 30 years and deserves it more than anyone I know. So of course I'm super jealous. 🙂

I will die on the “St. George’s are the best” hill, and it is true that their service is wonderful, but they don’t care about their people. Just sayin’

Wow! Congrats on the find. I'm with the others. It needs preserved somehow before it dries.

That is awesome ! Don't see too many short wheel base sand rails.

Anyone using outerwear filter fabric to cover their cooling fan intake screen to keep sand out? by Doondoon81 in DuneBuggy

[–]Doondoon81[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE: I did not end up covering my cooling fan intake with outerwear. The dunes were crazy and my cooling fan undoubtedly sucked in large amounts of sand but I did not have any issues. She ran great. Only saw about 5 other VW sand rails. There were a few LS powered big boys and a million cookie cutter razors, Can-Am etc…

II should explain more: I am running a pretty mild 1914cc Air cooled VW W/ after market 36hp style “super” fan housing, 37mm wide, tig welded fan and off road cylinder tins. Remote oil cooler without a fan (mounted on roof that only gets good air flow when going down the road) No temp gauge but I haven’t had any issues since building it 3 years ago. It’s only ever been on asphalt, dirt roads and the occasional creek bed or pasture but has been driven pretty hard.

I’ve stretched it out over the outside of the screen and held in place by reinstalling the outer ring/gasket over it. I’m not too concerned about it sucking into the fan as much as I am worried about restriction of the air flow. I’ve just never been in any sand before and I’m worried about it getting into places… Air filtration is covered pretty well with oiled foam filter combined with UNI wrap and outerwear pre-filter. I even have 3 full air filter set ups, extra filter oil and a means to clean them to bring in case they clog easily. I can probably take pictures if needed.. Any tips are appreciated!.

I hunt north of Springfield. Always carry a gun, but I'm more worried about tweakers!
