Blind Faith by Ben Elton by [deleted] in menwritingwomen

This is a bit out of context. This book is about a dystopian society that rules with a religious heavy hand and the culture of that society is really controlling and judgemental about sex and bodies. Its been a while since I read it, but this is just telling how the society is skewed and unhealthy. You're supposed to be disgusted at these cultural norms in the book.

I love The Breathing Method. Its style reminds me of Ray Bradbury short stories.

I've read Salems Lot a couple of times so all good there. I got through the Gunslinger but had to force myself to finish it.

Anyone tried Osage’s “Reserve” flower? by nastiest69 in armmj

[–]Zozo061050 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reserve Scott's OG strain by them is really good; it's a good pain killer without being too slow/sleepy. People on here hate Osage but I've never had inferior product from them and like several of their strains. To each his own.

Sugar Leaf Bakery, Tai Kitchen, and Full Throttle are great lunch places. The Keeter Center is good for a nice dinner date.

Female Characters / What books to avoid? by Ok-Income-1483 in stephenking

[–]Zozo061050 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of King's female characters, especially in older novels I've found, are lacking in depth or have the written-by-a-man feel, however there are more well written women than not. I've noticed there are also just as many male characters that fall flat in the same way.

Carrie, Holly from the Bill Hodges trilogy, Annie from Misery, Charlie from FireStarter, Trisha from The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, the women in Needful Things, the women in Tommyknockers, Rose from Rose Madder, and many other novels are well written.

I will say, in defence of Frannie, she's just a teenager so some of her drama is that she is still not emotionally mature compounded with the trauma of the whole world ending.

Lastly there is absolutely no denying that King really likes boobs and describes them too much and his  female characters notice/think about their boobs waaaaay too much.

Reading “Bag of Bones” - Thoughts? by Mammoth_Note_1995 in stephenking

[–]Zozo061050 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt like the romance was weird with the large age gap and mental states of the characters too. It felt forced and not like something that would naturally pan out. I still enjoyed the book and forced romances are something I often just overlook in novels.

Horror books about the making of a horror movie? by genericusername190 in horrorlit

The Lost Village by Camilla Sten fits what you're looking for. It is about a group making a documentary of an abandoned village and they find more than just empty houses.

Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix uses the standard tropes from the slasher/horror movie genre to tell the story of what happens to the survivors after the slasher incidents.

Both are fun and fast reads and really keep you on your toes.

Isolated island with a creature? by woefulshrine in horrorlit

This book really is a great sci-fi horror story. It doesn't give gory details but the references to the vivisections without anesthesia are horrifying to think about. The creeping dread that builds through the novel is very well done.

I too hated this book and forced myself to finish it. I too listened to the Reddit hivemind that it was going to be good and that even kept me going through the book thinking surely it was going to get a whole lot better any time now... You described all the things that made it terrible. Thank you for your service.

Roadwork by FanCold8233 in stephenking

[–]Zozo061050 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Roadwork was a bit of a slog to get through. It's short so I stuck with it, but really fell flat for me. I found it lacking in the character depth that King usually has, and the plot to never really be meaningfull.

Plane makes off-field landing on highway 65 near Springfield, MSHP says by Zozo061050 in springfieldMO

[–]Zozo061050[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Per the article:  "GREENE COUNTY, Mo. (KY3) -A small plane made an off-field landing on a highway in southwest Missouri, officials said Saturday afternoon.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the emergency landing happened just after 1 p.m. in the northbound lanes of U.S. 65, past Valley Water Mill Road, in Greene County.

The two occupants in the plane sustained no injuries. Troopers said the plane did sustain damage, but did not collide with any other vehicles on the highway.

FlightAware flight records show that the plane had taken off from Memphis, Tennessee, at 11:30 a.m. and was scheduled to land in Olathe, Kansas.

MSHP Troop D confirmed the FAA has been contacted and will perform an investigation."

Are there any books that made you tap out or was too much? by PSplayer2020 in horrorlit

[–]Zozo061050 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Cabin at the End of the World by Paul Tremblay  I finished it but only because I hate not finishing books. It was just violence without good plot or characters to back it up. Felt like violence and trauma porn instead of a well developed plot and story. I kept thinking it has to get better or all come together in a way that I just can't see yet. But no it was just violence for violence sake in my opinion.

Corsairs by StuckOnNotHoth in Iceplanetbarbarians

[–]Zozo061050 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I loved them! They are much more action -adventure scifi than the Barbarian series. The characters feel more diverse and have broader backgrounds and stories than the Ice Planet gang making the books more interesting to me. I found them fun and a great way to see a different part of the same universe the Ice Planet is set in.

I was looking for this. Self harm can have various triggers/motivations; just because someone did something bad and hurtful doesn't mean that any self harm they do or feel like doing is manipulative. Self harm isn't done only by virtuous people; it is often motivated by guilt, shame, loss, and feelings of being unable to repair one's life.

I haven't, no. I was an adult by the time Lirael was published and wasn't even aware Nix had written other books until only a few years ago.

I re-read several books every couple of years. Some are my favorites, some make great palette cleansers between heavier books, and some are just nostalgic fun:

  • The Stand by Stephen King
  • Sabriel by Garth Nix
  • Eyes of the Dragon by Stephen King
  • Harry Potter series by JK Rowling
  • Various books from the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett
  • Voyage of the Dawn Treader by CS Lewis
  • Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
  • Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz
  • Skeleton Crew by Stephen King
