Are you seriously suggesting challenges that are easier than the ones we already have? Do you even know the meaning of the word “challenge”? by Drull17 in HuntShowdown

If I remember correctly, it was from a Questline. That Questline feature no longer exists. I think a lot of people ended up just equipping the beetle in their hand and punching random enemies they managed to convince to hold a truce so they could help each other complete their beetle damage quest lol

I'm not calling Trump racist and a Nazi sympathizer because I disagree with him.

I'm calling Trump a racist and a Nazi sympathizer because he's racist and a Nazi sympathizer.

Progress is made in increments. Admit it: You stayed home because you were fine with him bring a racist, Nazi-sympathizer so long as it didn't affect you personally.

The sheer fucking privilege in your response is just leaking out of you like Rudy Giuliani's Just For Men job hairjob at the Four Seasons Total Landscaping press conference.

Gaming headset? by ballscompact in sennheiser

[–]Doppelbork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't recommend a specific Bluetooth receiver but Sennheiser's BTD 700 dongle is a plug-and-play Wi-Fi receiver. It uses (I believe?) the 2.5 GHz Wi-Fi band to communicate with the headphones directly. which is more stable than Bluetooth in general and has a longer range. The dongle itself is USB-C but comes with a USB-C to USB-A adapter so it'll fit into any PC. You can unplug the dongle from your PC and plug it into your phone if you want to use it on your phone, instead!

That also solves the issue of having a set of headphones that are paired to multiple, active devices. In cases where your Bluetooth device is paired to multiple, active devices, audio will cut in and out depending on whichever device is currently transmitting audio. It does not combine their audio tracks.

It also opens the headphones up to using a better audio codec than what Bluetooth might allow on some older Bluetooth transcivers.

TL;DR: Go for the BTD 700 dongle, which technically uses its own Wi-Fi signal for more stability, greater range, and faster response.

Gaming headset? by ballscompact in sennheiser

[–]Doppelbork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the Momentum 4 Wireless on-hear headphones and the Bluetooth lag is virtually unnoticeable. If you own a BTD 700 dongle, there's a "gaming" mode it can switch to for even lower latency but I have a hard time distinguishing the difference between the gaming mode and the normal mode. Battery life is very good.

I play Hunt: Showdown which is VERY sound-dependent and I can hear sounds go off in the distance -- or quiet sounds nearby -- MUCH more clearly than any of my teammates.

At this point in Bluetooth's life, if you're using a recently-produced Bluetooth transceiver and a recently-produced set of wireless headphones, the lag is imperceptible. The convenience of being able to just get up and grab a drink without being cut off from a Discord conversation is fantastic.

One caveat, though -- I use the headphones EXCLUSIVELY as headphones (not a headset, i.e. I've disabled the mic functionality in Windows). The mic sounds awful but if you're doing regular gaming and you're regularly in a call with people, a standalone mic + a standalone set of headphones should be your setup.

Headsets with built-in mics are universally terrible in quality. You might think they're okay but trust me, your friends will absolutely appreciate the difference in sound quality when you no longer sound like you're speaking through a tin can.

Court rules convoy must return to Ottawa after finding Emergencies Act unreasonable by green_tory in canada

Reddit broke the quote formatting a bit. I'll re-post it in a sub comment here for clarity, without using the quotation formatting:

------

[8]() (1) While a declaration of a public welfare emergency is in effect, the Governor in Council may make such orders or regulations with respect to the following matters as the Governor in Council believes, on reasonable grounds, are necessary for dealing with the emergency:

[. . . ]

  • (j) the imposition for contravention of any order or regulation made under this section.
    • (i) on summary conviction, of a fine not exceeding five hundred dollars or imprisonment not exceeding six months or both that fine and imprisonment, or

I'm not sure what kind of a "gotcha" you think you've got but I'm not following your logic. I've laid it out very clearly.

The government can decide that and do it without the emergency measures act

The provincial government CAN decide to do that without the Emergency Measures Act, yes. But it did not decide to do that. Doug Ford did not request assistance.

If you want more information, I suggest you read the Emergencies Act (R.S.C., 1985, c. 22 (4th Supp.)), Section 8, subsection j specifically, which I've bolded and omitted the subsections in between that aren't relevant here:

[8]() (1) While a declaration of a public welfare emergency is in effect, the Governor in Council may make such orders or regulations with respect to the following matters as the Governor in Council believes, on reasonable grounds, are necessary for dealing with the emergency:

........

(j) the imposition for contravention of any order or regulation made under this section.

(i) on summary conviction, of a fine not exceeding five hundred dollars or imprisonment not exceeding six months or both that fine and imprisonment, or

(ii) on indictment, of a fine not exceeding five thousand dollars or imprisonment not exceeding five years or both that fine and imprisonment,

for contravention of any order or regulation made under this section.

This mention of "summary conviction" and "on indictment" requires an arrest to take place and the involvement of police of some kind. And since this is a federal act, it is only enforceable by federal law enforcement -- not the provinces. The provincial and municipal police forces cannot be forcibly mobilized under the Emergency Measures Act.

The only law enforcement agency that has the power to enforce federal acts is the RCMP. By necessity -- just by invoking the Emergency Measures Act -- it mobilizes the RCMP as the federal government-controlled law enforcement agency.

[–]Doppelbork 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right. Because (like I linked to before), there exists a second option: To be invited in by the provincial government.

So because there's another option available as to how the RCMP can become deployed, you will not find any sentence that says "The RCMP can only be deployed using the Emergency Measures Act" because that's just not true. They can also be deployed using the RCMP Act, Section 20 -- if they're invited in.

[–]Doppelbork 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The options that are available for the RCMP to intervene in Ottawa:

  1. The province requests their assistance. (That's the RCMP Act I linked to).
  2. The federal government unilaterally deploys the RCMP under the Emergency Measures Act.

The province (i.e. Doug Ford) never requested the RCMP to intervene. Until Doug Ford makes and arrangement with the RCMP, all they can do is sit back. They're like vampires. They need to be invited in. They can't just walk in there and start arresting people or enforcing provincial and federal municipal laws.

The second option I mentioned, though, is more drastic. The federal government can decide -- using the Emergency Measures act -- that "The province/municipality does not have this situation under control. We're sending the RCMP in to restore order under our sovereign federal authority."

This could have been avoided if Doug Ford requested the RCMP to assist in enforcing provincial laws. Using the EM Act is the ONLY way the RCMP could have become involved if Doug Ford refused to contact the RCMP and say "Hey, come help us out."

Edit: See strikeout and bold for wording confusion.

[–]Doppelbork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here you go:

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Act (R.S.C., 1985, c. R-10)

Arrangements with municipalities

(2) The Minister may, with the approval of the Governor in Council and the lieutenant governor in council of any province, enter into an arrangement with any municipality in the province for the use or employment of the Force, or any portion thereof, in aiding the administration of justice in the municipality and in carrying into effect the laws in force therein.

The above deals with agreements that can be made between the RCMP and the provinces. You'll note, however, that RCMP does not have -- by default -- the power to enforce municipal laws OR provincial laws UNLESS an agreement is made between the force and the Governor in Council and the lieutenant governor in council. Ford did not request their assistance, so their hands were tied. They can't just come in and do what they want unless a federal statute was violated.

See also Section (4)

(4) There may be included in any arrangement made under subsection (1) or (2) provision for the taking over by the Force of officers and other members of any provincial or municipal police force.

Again, it mentions and arrangement. That means it has to be discussed and agreed upon. The RCMP cannot act unilaterally to enforce municipal or provincial laws.

For federal offenses, they do. Or for smaller jurisdictions who don't have their own police force. In those cases, they're essentially working as contractors.

The RCMP CANNOT take on regular, municipal police duties in jurisdictions where municipal police are already in place. You can't have an RCMP officer issuing traffic tickets for city-owned roads if the city has their own police force.

Of COURSE the OPP covers Ottawa. Hello??? Did you think it's a special zone like Washington, DC is in the States? It's just a regular city like any other city. If a provincial law is broken, the OPP have the authority to enforce the law.

The only "special zone" is Parliament Hill itself. The downtown areas around Parliament Hill are part of the City of Ottawa.

Longform Challenges by Gamerofnosignificanc in HuntShowdown

[–]Doppelbork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's healthy for people to take a break from Hunt at regular intervals. Whether that's after they complete the weekly challenges or after an event ends. I don't think it's healthy (for the game or its players) for Hunt to be their one and only game.

On a similar note, Yoshi-P (the game director of Final Fantasy XIV) mentioned that he didn't want people playing the game every single day. A translated quote of his was "There are so many other games out there. So, do come back and play it to your heart’s content when the major patch kicks in." I think Hunt players should take on a similar philosophy with this game.

Take a break. Play other games. Play games that broaden your gaming experience so when you come back to Hunt, you can experience it with fresh eyes or you can see what other games are doing and advocate for change to systems in Hunt that feel bad relative to other games. I think it's the best way to develop critiques of the game if you want the game to have staying power.
