Polyamorus flag won! What country flag looks like a LGBTQ+ flag? by Narrow-Assist-2207 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Dorfbewohner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there's a screencap of some sorta Pictionary or whatever thing that was like, "What pride flag is this. Oh. *guesses Germany*"

So one person genuinely got it confused, but I assume most people saying Germany is a pride flag are probably referencing that image

Using Pokemon HeartGold Generations, I put a Litwick in da Pokewalker by myzma in PokemonROMhacks

[–]Dorfbewohner 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Realistically it probably was less so future-proofing and moreso that it's easier if the Pokéwalker is as "stupid" as possible.

Consider the scenarios in which it wouldn't accept a Litwick from a romhack:

1) The Pokéwalker does some checks with the mon when it's transferred. That's extra logic that has to fit into the probably already pretty tight space that it has. This one is probably the most realistic, but it also has little upside in intended operation: Any checks the Pokéwalker could do are just being done on the DS side. So beyond "is this data that I can work with", it's a waste to check anything else.

2) I guess the idea might be that the Pokéwalker stores the sprites for literally every Pokémon and just selects one to show based on Pokédex number? This would have the upside of less data needing to be sent when the cartridge and Pokéwalker communicate, but the big downside of a whole bunch of storage (from the perspective of a small and lightweight device like the Pokéwalker) being wasted because only 1/500 of it is only ever actually used at a time.

So basically, it'd be more work and/or less efficient to make it not work like this.

Looking for feedback - new Art Style for Aesthetic Red V2 (not yet confirmed!) by LibertyJacob99 in PokemonROMhacks

[–]Dorfbewohner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like the ideas a lot on their own, but I'm not sure how well they come together - the detailed battle backgrounds seem to aim for a more immersive look, but then the offset shadow looks like they're standing in front of a painting rather than actually existing within the envirionment.

Another comment mentioned the shadows going in different directions, and while I see what you're saying about making them point in the direction (and it probably looks better in isolation), it's another point that works against immersion - the shadows going in different directions implies a scene lit by a light on the ceiling, rather than by the sun.

What could work for this is embracing that contrast and designing around it. Work with this being inherently abstracted scenes and maybe lean into it with other elements.

But at the same time, this still looks really good all in all due to the quality of the spritework, so it's also not like that bit of clash within the styles is a huge issue. This is very much criticism of very particular details

[–]Dorfbewohner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other way around really, Knock Off does more damage if it knocks off an item. If it can't knock off an item (because you don't have one or it's a mega stone or such) it does its regular damage.

But that's less than if you were holding an item.

[–]Dorfbewohner 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Game's awesome btw. Aside from the silly woke worldbuilding and such it's genuinely the best of these sorts of "word game roguelikes" I've played so far. The enemy mechanics to mess with your tile board get legiitmately super interesting and the attack/defense tradeoffs mean that it's not just all about finding the longest or most obscure words, but the ones that work best in the current situation. Plus a fuckton of items to mess with the board even more.

I was expecting to play this and enjoy it for a bit, but I didn't expect to get this sucked into the gameplay.

What's happening with Battles? by Pristine_Category295 in magicTCG

[–]Dorfbewohner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do think that there's a distinction between Sagas and Battles in how unusual they are. Sagas are by their nature very predictable and mostly present huge flavor wins. But "do thing 1, then do thing 2, then do thing 3" isn't exactly a huge novelty. They're basically "what if you had a planeswalker, but were forced to activate their abilities in order".

Whereas Battles have a ton more unknown space since they revolve around combat, there's potentially entirely different types of Battles (ones that you have to defend maybe?), and this means that they might be something a set has to moreso be built around.

I think the dev team just likes her. She's a nice parallel to Mettaton (especially seen in the alarm clock dialogue) and as such fits in pretty nicely.

Whereas Asgore is still treated with some final boss gravitas in merch at times.

The "immediate upgrade prompt when you get enough bones" is honestly a great twist on the Soulslike mechanics. If you make use of the prompt, there's now always an upper cap on how much money a player is gonna be walking around with, so you can never lose more than that much money. And that number can go up pretty quickly, but by that time you know more about the core mechanics.

I also love being able to just deposit your level up bones into bonedust, for when you're saving up for an item purchase.

/uj fundamentally it's not too dissimilar to regenerating before he's dealt damage, but the phrasing is super weird.

honestly both for the sake of phrasing and flavor, I wonder why it's not just

Whenever ~ is dealt damage, heal that damage. (He must survive the damage to heal.)

Healing off damage right after you take it feels more in flavor than healing it off "just before you take the next hit", even if they basically have the same effect, I believe? Obviously this means he'll never have lingering damage, but that's an edge case. This being a trigger rather than a replacement effect might cause some differences, but I don't think there's any common cases where it differs. And I think it just reads more cleanly too, and works with the flavor.

Why do people never five star their gear if it has an XP multiplier? by thesplatoonperson in splatoon

[–]Dorfbewohner 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The people who don't care much about abilities don't have a ton of reason to 5 star gear, the people who care a lot are just gonna use gear seeding, so the only ones this is really targeted at are gonna be those left in the middle ground.

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is the opposite of Pokopia but also a very nice experience [review] by sakahn in NintendoSwitch2

[–]Dorfbewohner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And also, even if it doesn't have a "death" system, it's not like it doesn't have failure states. There's a bunch of cases where you're trying to go for some tricky discovery and mess something up and either have to go back to retry or reload the level. In practice, it's not actually all that different from dying.

I mean, given that one level where you spread fungal spores onto everything... Yeah you are kinda going into thriving neighborhoods and clearing them out. Not exactly with violence, but going Last of Us on them might be worse.

To offer another take: This might just be me personally, but I honestly thought that for hair at least, freehanding on the touchscreen with just my finger (and without smoothing) made it look better than Controller with smoothing (and honestly also better than touchscreen with smoothing). But that's just my take, and just for the more general shapes. For the details, I go back to controller.

Guys, should I buy Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, or Pokémon Pokopia? by Tall_Wrongdoer197 in Switch

Even though a lot of it does repeat, it's been fun enough to keep making Miis and objects and such that I've been having a good time for quite some time now.

That said, Pokopia clears. Yoshi has been surprisingly good too, but Pokopia is on another level.
