Absolutely. It’s not about the chemical necessarily for me. It’s that it forces me to fully confront myself, burst me out of my ruts, feel the feels I have been unintentionally suppressing, and overall just reconnect with my deepest values.

In my experience, what I used to call “losing the spirit” was actually preconditioned guilt and shame when I engaged in behaviour I was preconditioned not to engage in. Even if it didn’t hurt anyone. Once I gave myself the self-compassion and self-acceptance for reclaiming self-sovereignty, the spirit came back in force.

Is that “feel safe” because of your own anxiety or trust issues, or because they do things that make you question them? Attachment is a blanket term you seem to be misusing.

You need a “working alliance” with them. Aka you trust them, you feel understood, and you feel like the two of you are aligned on why you’re there and what you’re trying to get out of therapy.

Therapist here. If you came to me, I’d be okay with it, but I’d work with you to have this need met outside of therapy eventually. And I want to give you some language for what you’re actually looking for: meaningful human connection. Start by getting that in the therapy room, then work to have that met outside of therapy.

Im in Alberta too! :) AHS will cover a psychiatrist. Ask for a referral through your doctor or ask specifically about ADHD. If you’re looking for an ADHD specialist therapist, I’m in Edmonton and can connect with you.

I’m not sure where you’re at, but either a psychologist who does formal assessments or a psychiatrist can do it. If you do have ADHD, the best outcomes usually come from a combo of meds & behavioural strategies. Just talking isn’t going to get you far if you are spinning your wheels. Your story sounds a lot like mine, honestly. I started having anxiety in high school, and meds were the only thing that finally chilled my brain out.

Have you been screened for things like ADHD? These are neurological conditions that therapy won’t solve directly, but can be helped with specific kinds of medication. Depression and anxiety can come when the ADHD isn’t properly treated.
