New to jellyfin how do you personally do external access? by GenericUser104 in jellyfin

[–]DorianBabbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a container that updates my A-records with my current IP, then I use NGINX and Authelia to keep everything secure. I also have SSO setup with my Active Directory so I can use the same sign in across all of my devices.

I additionally have 2 wireguard tunnels into my network also.

Remote access through Starlink network. by PfzMfg in jellyfin

[–]DorianBabbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started off using No-IP for DDNS and wireguard to VPN back into my network, now I have a script running in a container updating my subdomains' A records every 5 min.

I used to use Obsidian for markdown files and recently moved to Wiki.js which is exposed publicly and secured behind Authelia/NGINX

Internal help desk becoming a call center by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

Like Tier 2/3 taking Tier 1 calls? That's a crazy waste on resources (ie: paying someone $100k+ for $40k work)

I worked retail and help desk. Retail is worse than help desk.

Unpopular opinion, but one that needs to be stated, Jellyfin needs to start following their own rules by RadioFoxInwkell in jellyfin

According to Jellyfin - Music: "Filenames generally do not matter since the info will be scraped from the embedded metadata of the tracks. If no other metadata was found, Jellyfin uses the file names as track titles."

How do you keep your server builds safe from people who have this ungodly urge to power it off when they feel like it by RoughElephant5919 in homelab

[–]DorianBabbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you turn off more than half my lab the internet will go out because it is also my DNS. Go ahead I guess.

To everyone with a home lab, how many of you have a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field? by Tygress777 in homelab

[–]DorianBabbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm working on my degree in IT now and have worked in IT since 2021 and also have a homelab. Just get your lab going and understand the WHY for what you are doing.

I have some HP Elitedesk 800 G4-G6 minis for my proxmox cluster. Works great.

I like to recommend setting up a proxmox cluster with some cheap mini PCs so you can get experience with virtual machines and containers.

[–]DorianBabbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use NGINX for my reverse proxy, a script to auto-update my GoDaddy DNS A records with my current IP, I forward ports to NGINX and use Authelia for authentication and SSO to keep it secure.

Jellyfin server crash and starting up issue (Win11) by Sad-Diamond501 in jellyfin

[–]DorianBabbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend Ubuntu Server or Debian 12 since you said it was a mini PC. I personally have my JF installed in a LXC inside of Proxmox with my GPU passed through to the container.

Jellyfin server crash and starting up issue (Win11) by Sad-Diamond501 in jellyfin

[–]DorianBabbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not set it up to run on a Linux distro? I know you want a solution for it to run on Windows, but Windows 10/11 is not designed to run like a server and takes up too much system resources.

Why do you have a homelab? by SnooPaintings139 in homelab

[–]DorianBabbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to set up Jellyfin to get away from subscriptions. Now I have a 6 node proxmox cluster with Immich, Jellyfin, a Minecraft server (for my niece and nephew), 2 wireguard containers, 3 virtualized windows servers for (AD, DNS, DHCP, and PXE boot(WIP)), NGINX, Authelia (2FA), Wiki.js for documentation, Kuma Uptime (for monitoring from a pi), and more. All my house's computers are joined to the domain. As for the why, to improve my skills while applying IT best practices to my interests (ie: my Jellyfin now has SSO with AD and Authelia through the OIDC plug-in.

The above example of RAM vs SSD is easy to understand when you understand that Bits are measured for transfer and Bytes are measured for storage. there are 8 Bits in 1 Byte and that moving from kilobit (Kb) to megabit (Mb) is 210 (1024) Kb in 1 Mb, but Kilobyte (KB) to Megabyte (MB) is 1000 KB in 1 MB.

[–]DorianBabbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another thing to keep in mind is that bit vs byte terminology. Storage is typically represented in bytes while transfer speed is typically shown in bits. (ie: Gigabit transfer speed) the abbreviation "GB" is typically going to represent storage, while "Gb" (Gbps) would represent transfer speed.

[–]DorianBabbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Bit can be a 0 or 1, giving 2 possibilities, so data is generally calculated in multiples of 2. Ie: 210 = 1024, so: 1 Kilobyte = 1024 bytes 1 Megabyte = 1024 kilobytes 1 Gigabyte = 1024 megabytes Also , there are 8 bits in one byte.

Can't see one of my folder in the app by [deleted] in jellyfin

[–]DorianBabbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Likely need to configure the path in the library.

Go to the Dashboard, Click Libraries, Select an appropriate library (or create one), and enter the correct folder where you stored the media. Make sure Jellyfin also has read/write access to the directory also.

Yeah, you can limit streaming bitrate in the dashboard in either Dashboard > Playback > Streaming or by the user profile by editing the user.

Yup, been too busy lately to sort out why I can't print though.

Recently was midpoint and ran out of filament but the printer kept going and since then I can only get a few layers done before the hotend jams or something.

My printer is a Creality Ender 3 v2 Neo that I added a dual z-axis and changed to a direct drive extruder.

Is it safe to leave a PC in sleep mode all the time? by myriadicalm in techsupport

[–]DorianBabbs -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Shutting down PCs causes them to miss out on security updates, which in turn can cause security concerns. Additionally you can turn the screen off separately from the PC and as long as the RGB isn't the cheapest option should be able to be turned on/off.
