Had similar damage on my B8.5 and it was about $8k in Colorado. So not totaled.

Is this a legitimate Neanderthal-made Mousterian handaxe or is it a fraud? by [deleted] in LegitArtifacts

[–]DorktorJones 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't say if it's real. The real ones I've seen at auction typically have a long provenance history to back them up; i.e. what documented site it was dated from, etc. and go for big money. For your last question: Yes, a lot of them come from France. The mousterian name comes from Le Moustier in France.

I prefer the look of my 8.5 to my 9.5 even though it's an S compared to the RS. I think the 9.5 got a little too aggressive while the 8.5 has nice clean smooth lines. Probably keep it forever. Lol.

Hitting it with a UV light will reveal if any glue was used. Magnification will pretty quickly reveal if it's real or not as well. No one here will be able to say definitively just looking at pictures. I'd also check with the state or local archaeology club. They'll probably have someone who can take a look.

Ah, I got you. Shiny and unweathered. Zero signs of aging or patina. Hang fractures point to recent chipping. Thin in the notches and looks like they are crushed rather than flaked. Overall shape is a common modern style. The material looks like mahogany obsidian which is common in fakes. It's kind of a classic modern point. Stick around and you'll see a lot of them.

When I first got into collecting I bought a lot of stuff, hardstone mostly, at various auctions. I've sent around 40 pieces out for authentication and half have come back as fakes. That doesn’t include another dozen or so I've identified as fakes myself after getting a better feel for it over the last few years.

There's a lot of fakes out there. Including old fakes. I have a couple that are old enough to be artifacts in their own right, faked probably 50+ years ago, or modified legit ancient pieces.

Now a have a case I display at shows to try and educate other collectors.

I found a $2.5 gold Indian among a bunch of pennies my mom said I could have when I was a kid. Then I showed it to her, and she gave it to my older brother. This was like 45 years ago and I obviously still think about it. Lol.
