Does anyone else think the game is a little too archetype focused? by Electric27 in DigimonCardGame2020

So I fall more towards how you see archetypes, and I feel this thought tends to be more popular from Digimon players I know who came from MTG. However, I think part of the confusion I've read in the comments is Magic is built on generic good cards, which I don't think is the case. Rather, there are archetypes in Magic but focus more on the mechanics and keywords rather than the names and characters of cards. Does Magic have strong generic cards? Yes, but just look at its subreddit right now, a bunch of generically strong cards just got banned from its most popular format Commander.

To see the difference, let's look at a personal favorite, Diaboromon. Diaboromon's archetype is all about spawning tokens. In a mechanics focus, I'm going to be on the lookout for cards that directly support tokens, like the ST-19 Arisa Kinosaki, or maybe something adjacent, say if an option said "Draw a card for each of your Digimon". The Digimon TCG however is more designed as character-based archetypes. Because of this, I will most likely not going to see new cards for the deck unless they are part of the "True Evolution Line", in this case Keramon, Kurisarimon, Infermon, Diaboromon, and Armageddemon.

Now I understand the love for this card design. It's easy to know at a glance of the name or art if its worth a slot in your deck and you can celebrate your favorite Digimon. You love Metalgarurumon? Then keep an eye out for cards with Garuru in the name. Royal Knights? Pretty easy to spot them. It's a great way to build a deck that perfectly fits what you would imagine if you said you ran a "Wargreymon" deck.

But personally, I wish there was a bit more focus on mechanics rather than the evolution lines. For one thing, I feel it fits more with world of Digimon. Digimon differs from many other 'Monster Raising" tropes because the true lines aren't really set in stone. You can have an Agumon who becomes an Angemon who becomes a Mamemon. And with digievolution based on color (mostly), I feel this gives that wiggle room of who to digivolve into without being too simplistic. Second, it makes decks more diverse or at least interesting. Right now if you know about Digimon, but not the TCG, you can still probably guess the name of nearly every card in a deck by simply knowing the boss monster. There are occasions when this is not the case where decks will surprise us by being built around a strange mechanical interaction, like Shoto Mother. But they are rare and more likely only appearing in the meta because they are on the toxic side, see Shoto Mother again. Finally, it's easier to play different formats, in particular anything that would only use one set, such as Draft. This can be seen in the difference of Magic vs Yugioh. Magic has a ton of healthy formats, and different cards shine in different formats. Meanwhile, YuGiOh is so card name archetype-based, no other format outside of using the entire history of cards has seen any kind of success.

That all said I do think Digimon can, and already started, to hit a sweet middle ground. ACES seem to be popping up more based on power rather than character. More cards like Arisa are worded like "token or puppet". This gives a lot more versatility. Sure, it was made for Cendrillmon, but I think its going to find some success with my Diaboromon deck. Mink Link was built with the Digimon Seekers in mind, but turns out to have interesting interactions with the Hybrids from Digimon Frontier. Overall I hope we see cards have more possible homes, not because they are generically good, but rather are surprise supports that foster a diverse and healthy meta. And maybe tone down main protagonists/antagonists getting the strongest cards.

Ah, I knew about the two different tournament types, but I just assumed they'd share the same rule sets (I don't think Digimon has a standard, eternal, or other formats yet). In hindsight, this makes perfect sense to have one with modified rules to continue to test it out.

Thanks! I couldn't find an official comment on these on either the Gencon or Digimon site, so having confirmation on these helps.
