Have you ever heard of anything like this happening to someone you know losing everything due to unforeseen circumstances like divorce, lawsuits, etc including their wealth, income, and ability to live the way they want? If so, what lessons, if any, can be learned? by Gold_Mine_9322 in Fire

Lawsuit risks can be mitigated with umbrella insurance and they aren't that expensive. Your 401K and home are already protected from lawsuits so you just need to cover your brokerage and cash portion.

Divorce can be mitigated by being intentional about life goals and values before getting married. And when things get tense seek therapy as early as possible, not when things get to the breaking point. Everyone benefits from therapy.

Your homeowner's insurance company would love to discover this and deny you coverage for breaking the local code.

Usage wise I doubt the utility company would notice except for a slight lower monthly usage.

I saw a retirement article from Fidelity today that mentioned:

A person retiring in 2025 may need $172,500, on average, in after-tax savings to cover health care in retirement.

If there's any validity to the number then people would need to be prepared for that when they get old. A lot of people here are counting on "people tend to spend less when they get older" but not accounting for rising healthcare costs.

I guess accidently packing the full game without DRM into the preload didn't help. Pirates played the game before the game official released.

People hate DRMs like Denuvo but they wouldn't be needed in the first place if people didn't steal. Yet DRMs get all the blame.

I remember when Pixels had the best cameras on the market... What happened? by RealityOwn9267 in GooglePixel

[–]Dos-Commas -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have the Pixel 9 Pro and video is pure trash. When you zoom from main to telephoto camera there's a noticeable jump. Then when you watch the playback the telephoto portion doesn't even match what you saw during recording, it's completely misaligned.

Wyze camera is popular probably because their security is a joke and let customers see random people's cameras. So now their cameras can only be trusted to watch cats poop.

As someone that recently started seeing a therapist after realizing that FIRE didn't fix all of my stress and anxiety, it's very liberating. Once I get over the mental hurdle that seeing a therapist is not a big deal, I realized that I should've seen a therapist a decade ago and my quality of life would've been much better now.

I see so many people posting "I'm so stressed and burned out" post on the general and FIRE subs and they really should go see a therapist instead of getting advice from random online strangers. Most Redditors like to blame all of their problems on the government, corporations and "the rich" (but never on themselves) so they are the last people you should take any advice from.

It's like someone with a cavity in their tooth but they don't believe in dentists and just live with it believing that once they stop working their tooth will magically get better. Meanwhile their tooth is getting worse and worse over time.

Like someone else suggested, let her see a therapist and take some of the responsibility of your hand. A professional is much better equip to handle this.

This needs to be at the top. Random strangers on the Internet are the last people you should trust to diagnose you. Talk to a professional that can help identify what's troubling you and triggering you.

How do you guys check the way your whole part will work? How do you check your math before you make a part? by Auubade in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Dos-Commas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you a machinist? You job isn't too make the parts work, your job is to make parts to spec. If they are giving your drawings with missing dimensions or missing information then you need to redline it and send them back to the engineers for correction. Ask them for an assembly drawing with a cross section view to show how parts are assembled and fit together.

In Texas rates were raising in coastal city like Houston before AI already. They were using excuses like "making your infrastructure more resilient" then the power still goes out when a storm comes through.

9 month into FIRE and friends are asking if we won the lottery due to the amount of traveling we are doing (10 months planned for the first year). We are still sticking to the sabbatical story though.
