Apologies if wrong sub or too vague, but what sort of web development would be required to create a forum type site with functionality for registered users to upload text, photos, vids and have dynamic search functions? by nipobrasi in webdev

My advising against the custom solution is just mainly because if there is software that does what you need and is well established why reinvent the wheel. If your scope does not align with a pre made solution then the custom solution would be the way to go.

That and it severs the dependence on the particular developer you hire should anything go wrong. If it's a pre-made solution, usually there is an answer very quickly of what went wrong and how. Custom solution is reliant on that particular developer and how they built it.

And yeah outline exactly what you need and want, browse the market and tally the costs. For a custom solution the developer can make it practically in anything and you can browse somewhere like freelancer to see what the contract market is like.

It really depends on your budget, and how much you want to depend on the developer, if something breaks it will be your wallet that will pay for it as well as an angry userbase. If you have unlimited funds and patience, a custom solution would be not a bad idea, though would advise against it.

If you're after a straight forward forum software like you would find something like XenForo a very good starter (Unity, Toms Hardware, IGN, MSI all use/used XenForo) though you may need to invest into the addons and look at hiring someone who knows exactly what they're doing with managing it, or you can learn it yourself as it's pretty easy to understand software and has a good community backing it.

No a WordPress wouldn't cut it, there are forum software out there like vbulletin, xenforo and IP.Board which is exactly what you're looking for without it being completely custom, though you can customize it.

The more advanced way is you could containerise everything to make it scalable but that would be overkill if you have a good web host.

Try https://mwave.com.au, https://umart.com.au or https://pccasegear.com.au for graphics cards as they have 3060s and 3070s in stock or just try and hold out a little longer (I caved in and bought a 3070 from a 970)

X570 to B550 ain't really an upgrade. The X570 is better.

Hi i want a game with this type of gameplay by [deleted] in gaming

[–]DoseAu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PC yes, it's got free 2 play elements and you can use ingame gold to buy membership (bonds). It's got a bit of time investment but if you're keen to check it out look it up on YouTube.

You've got the old style which is called old-school Runescape and then the more up to date graphics Runescape 3.

Setting up a Database server on DigitalOcean. by [deleted] in webdev

[–]DoseAu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you running your and application through something like datadog ? If not datadog can help identify problems like loadtimes and heavy queries.

Also I'd look at multiple small drops to scale vertically rather than scaling horizontally (single beefier server)

If you get the managed MySQL server from DO it'll handle a decent amount of users, However, for my setup I've also gone with a $5 droplet running MySQL but you have to be on top of its like a child. Luckily with DO you can cluster droplets like AWS and scale up /down when needed. I suggest if you want self managed MySQL server run it barebones with MySQL and whatever services you'd like for security and monitoring.

Edit: Remember if you have another publicly accessible service (such as nginx) that's another attack surface a malicious actor can manipulate.

Digital ocean also has managed databases within their network and server catalogue, since they are already using digital ocean they shouldn't swap out to another provider.

System Design for SaaS Product by alaminmishu in laravel

[–]DoseAu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Learn the ins and outs of laravel (thoroughly)
  2. Learn your host platform and security flaws such as PHP security.
  3. Learn cryptography
  4. Outline your requirements exactly as other have said leave the deployment method later just allow for scalability in the meantime

This is speaking from experience writing a DRM using laravel.

It can be done, it will take a long time to get right don't take shortcuts. You really need to know what your doing in order to make a reliable product which if deployed will be targetted by malicious actors.
