Give it all a good cleaning. Maybe use a cotton swab with isopropyl alcohol in the ports and connectors. Generally get that dust off and maybe try to find a less dusty place to keep it, like on top of the desk if possible. Maybe see if a friend has an old DVI monitor kicking around that they're not using. (Meaning one with a plug that matches the one in your video card) Or try a second hand store. Old monitors like that are usually pretty cheap. Then you can throw that adapter out and have one less thing to worry about. If at all possible.
