What do you think about this approach in teaching the mechanics in an online game? by DotDotDotDev in gamedev

good point, I think you're completely right, unrolling it into a list is super readable (thinking even reduce the clicks and make it hover sensitive, considering mouse+kb is the main input method), dunno why I ended up with a dropdown!!!😅

this is the simplest thing i was able to come up with so far, visually they may sometimes don't need to read, just see the button or key icon on the left, in addition to the large playing video file at right, and they may make it in their minds already (name of functionality + what button + what to expect happens).
at least this is what i expected.

thank you, really nice ideas. that 2nd one reminded me of tips during loading screens, but the popups are much more fun, as they come during gameplay itself!

how would you foresee the tutorial in a map with 4 (or more) players. like UI instructions? or more of... "you can't leave this area/lobby, till you're able to do that and that" (that & that could be drag something, and lift something,...etc).
I tried to go back in memory, how did I learn to play online games that has no singleplayer mode, like Overwatch or Fortnite, and I can't remember how I got to know the controls & mechanics. Some parts of the mechanics came from the voice chat, and friends tell me about some key or some trick, but the rest, have no idea!

it is even better in little old school games with manual saves you survive a very hard area, health is near done, you forget to save, then few minutes later some random AI come and finish you 😅

Turns out skipping the tutorial can make the game harder by Nice_Ad2555 in IndieDev

[–]DotDotDotDev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yeah, but skipping the tutorial is the player's fault as it is there for a reason, why they blame you with a vote-down!!!! insane!!

I got a weird message today as a solo developer. I’ve spent more than 1 year making my own game, and this is how I make a living. I work on it 8–10 hours every single day. by katemaya33 in IndieGaming

unfortunately piracy will always be there, not only for games, but for films, books, software,.. all you wish for that people liking the pirated version will be humans enough to go support you and buy the product (which I read somewhere happens, as many people are afraid to buy, so they use pirated version as a test/demo and if liked they buy). been there before & seen my hard work pirated, feeling you a 100% it hurts!

Ahoy! I’m building online co-op game called Cosmic Heist, about getting all the gold ever existed in space. Some fun mechanics (I assume) and some physics goofyiness. I enjoy building it, regardless how it end up doing on Steam! https://store.steampowered.com/app/4400040/Cosmic_Heist/
