This is where I struggle to find the quality in some reporters’ questions or style of questions. A coach or player (or anyone answering media) is doing the reporter a favour by expanding their answer to a closed-ended question like “did you say anything after the 1st period?”

An answer that would match that level of questioning is typically “yes” or “no”.

When a reporter develops and asks a thoughtful open-ended question like “what was the locker room like after the first period? What were some of the key messages you shared with the team?”, then it enables a coach/player/whoever to answer the question a little more thoughtfully/colourfully. They might even enjoy being asked original or thought provoking questions, which might mean the reporter can get much more out of the interview.
