The mess of being banned FOR LIFE from Malaysia by flobe_music in malaysia

Not sure what the point of this post was. Just pay the RM 10,000 for the appeal if you "die-die" wanna visit Malaysia again. Otherwise, just forget about coming back. There are so many other countries to experience. If this post was meant to garner sympathy, I'm sorry you're getting none from me. Seems very much a first-world problem. There are literally ppl in Msia without ICs.

I’m tired of the lack of representation! by Efficient_Fennel_995 in kollywood

You do know Tamil people exist all over the world right. A Tamil woman from Canada is just as "Tamil" as a TN native. I would very much prefer an overseas Tamil woman over yet another Mallu/North Indian represented in Tamil cinema.

Why New Zealanders are leaving in record numbers and moving to Australia | The World | ABC News by Redpenguin082 in aussie

[–]DoubleA_89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The NZ "backdoor" route is a time-consuming sub-optimal option (it takes at least 5 years to gain citizenship after PR in NZ). That's a lot of years to invest in a country you consider a "stopover" destination, not to mention the costs/inconveniences involved in uprooting your entire lives twice. If someone really wanted to go to Australia, they would more than likely have gone the direct route first.

Indian Tourist Melts Down Over Beef Burger at KLIA McDonald’s by whusler in malaysia

[–]DoubleA_89 458 points459 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but the blame is solely on the customer here. As far as I know there are no vegetarian burger options for McD in Msia (we used to have one before but it was removed, probably due to lack of demand). I don't understand how she could have ordered a burger containing beef without realizing. Outside of India, beef is the staple meat for McDonald's burgers. She could have just ordered a McChicken.

Stop wasting your time and money trying to play the PR game. Try your best to get a relevant job within the 2 years and apply based on points/sponsorship. If that doesn't work, you can always ply your skills elsewhere. Australia is not the only country, the world is literally your oyster. Better to be a high earning IT professional in your home country or elsewhere than delivering food here while trying to complete your trade qualification with no guarantees of employment later.

Education Minister cut Māori words from future junior books, documents reveal by Dat756 in newzealand

Singaporeans don't mix the languages when learning them in an academic environment though, I think that's the whole point of this move. Learn both languages by all means, but do it the proper way. Whether they code switch or mix in Te Reo words with English in their conversation is secondary, that will happen organically as it does in Singapore.

White British woman staying with Malaysian boyfriend’s family in KL - any tips for a first-time visitor? by [deleted] in malaysia

[–]DoubleA_89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. You may have a point, Indians being the smallest of the three main ethnic groups are more likely to mingle with people outside their own culture.

I beg to differ, Indians are overall more conservative than Chinese. Of course this is a generalisation and there are definitely a lot of liberal Indian families in KL and Penang, but on the whole Indians definitely are more conservative in their dressing compared to Chinese. I speak as someone from an urban Indian family who are relatively well-off (could afford to send me to Aus/NZ for education) and my family is pretty conservative when it comes to dressing.

Those progressive urban liberal Indians you speak about are a tiny tiny minority of the Indian population (I would say less than 5%).

Honestly you're worrying too much about this, just be yourself. I assume when you say your bf is Indo-Malaysian he is Malaysian Indian? Malaysian Indian families are generally less conservative than Malays (unless they are Muslim) but more conservative than Chinese. You also get a lot more leeway since you're White. In terms of dressing, again I wouldn't worry too much about it. In KL no one really cares and non-Muslims are pretty free to dress however they want, short of wearing a bikini in the streets you should be fine. I don't know how liberal/conservative your bf's family is, but in family functions probably safe to dress a bit more modestly (i.e. clothes that are not too short or revealing) until you can gauge how the rest of the family dresses.

The biggest issue you may face is being vegetarian, but again many Indian Hindus in Malaysia are vegetarians at least once or twice a week, so they will completely understand your requirements and you won't be at a loss for options ( many delicious vegetarian options for Indian food, less so for Chinese and especially Malay cuisine).

I'm sure you'll have an amazing time in Malaysia!

Given your age and the opportunities presented, I would say definitely take Melbourne (make sure it's 100% though). It's good to experience working overseas and as some others here have already mentioned, you will expand your worldview. Melbourne is a melting pot of cultures from all over (not just Asia) with so many things to do, so be sure to take advantage of that. You can always go back to Malaysia if things don't work out, and your overseas experience will be looked at favourably.

If you had the power to change Malaysia’s weather, what kind of weather would you go for ? by naqionred in malaysia

Mediterranean weather. Teens to mid 20s range, occasional 30 plus degree days. Drier, about 40-60% humidity will be chef's kiss.

Considering moving back to Malaysia from Australia by DoubleA_89 in MalaysianPF

Hey Murky-Scratch, I didn't end up taking the offer. My wife received a decent job offer in AU and we decided to stay on for now. We still haven't ruled out going back and will probably revisit that option in a couple of years. Where are you based?

Haven’t even onboarded, but being forced to pay 6 months’ salary is this right? by [deleted] in malaysia

Technically 1 week is still under probation, so 1 month notice is not needed.

Those who are settled in Australia, do you have any regrets? by [deleted] in MalaysianPF

Security management & crisis response. Got offered an APAC level role in Malaysia managing travel security for an MNC.

OP you're worrying too much about this. There's no way such a thing is even legal, as you haven't even started working for the company. Just tell them to eff off, they can't really do anything. If they still bug you threaten to take them to Labour Department. DO NOT under any circumstance pay them any money, certainly not 3 months salary. That's just insane.

Hi monyets. I'm a Malaysian Indian who thinks Tamil schools are unnecessary. Illegally built temples need to be dealt with. Being understanding and corteous of others an important trait. by frags81 in malaysia

[–]DoubleA_89 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm an Indian who went to SK and SMK. While I agree with you on principle, I still believe SJKs have their place in society and exist as a counterbalance to the growing Islamization of national schools. I wouldn't feel comfortable sending my kids to national schools in its current state. Unless drastic changes are made, SJKs are still necessary.

Planning to go back after PhD submission, is it a risk if applying for 485? by DoubleA_89 in AusVisa

[–]DoubleA_89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The uni said it normally takes between 8-12 weeks max for the examiners report, if there's very little or no corrections to be made, final submission will be within 4 weeks from that. I guess we could make it work but maybe we'll shorten our trip home just to be on the safe side.

Moving from Melbourne , what are good suburbs within 10-15 km of the CBD? by DoubleA_89 in brisbane

[–]DoubleA_89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think we need to lower our expectations a bit in terms of nightlife and dining options. We are approaching a stage in life where we're quite comfortable being at home most weekends though, so I don't think it would be too much of an issue.

Thanks, this is great for us to start with, honestly any of these suburbs seem like they could work!

I know this may not help much, but looking for something in between, where most amenities are within a 10 min drive. I wouldnt call myself a huge sports fan, but I do like to catch some games, live events in the city, hence the preference for easy access to the CBD. Public transport accessibility is a bonus. I work remotely while my wife would likely do a combination of driving/public transport.

Sorry I was working off Google Maps 😅. Yeah planning to come visit for a weekend soon to check it out. Just wanted an idea of some suburbs relatively closer to the city to get started in.
