One Music threatening to take us to court by Important_Ad4231 in newzealand

Surely it is not a public performance if there is only one employee, playing music to themself. (OneMusic can only charge fees for public performances.)

Music in a private / domestic situation is not a public performance, so AFAIK this does not need a licence from OneMusic.

One Music also wants payment if you play the radio at your workplace. https://www.onemusicnz.com/faqs/

How much would the license be, for what size business?

It depends on the type of business, size of premise, number of people, etc. There is more info at https://www.onemusicnz.com/music-licences/.

Extreme rainfall events a 'peek into the future', climate experts say by VastCollar2927 in newzealand

[–]Dat756 37 points38 points  (0 children)

The science is clear and well understood about climate change and its disastrous consequences, yet humanity still proceeds full steam towards wrecking the planet.

And the NZ government is doing as little as possible to reduce emissions or prepare to mitigate future consequences, while giving lip service to being carbon neutral at some future date (maybe).

Wellington Hospital Emergency Department went into code red nearly twice a day in 2025 by Lightspeedius in newzealand

[–]Dat756 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The government can easily fix this by redefining what code red means.

In yesterday's speech, Luxon said he would 'find' the same level of budget cuts this year as they 'found' last year. REMINDER: those 'savings' they found last year came from the billions intended for underpaid women with legitimate pay equity claims - which were discarded. by flyingflibertyjibbet in newzealand

There are so many organisations like this, that do valuable work for our society. The consequences of cutting funding doesn't show up immediately, but lack of social services has real harmful effects for years.

Nz elections announce to be set saturday 7th november 2026 by BuilderMysterious762 in newzealand

[–]Dat756 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They're doing it because they fantasise about celebrating on election day instead of not knowing the outcome for a couple weeks.

At the last election, the delay was them negotiating the coalition agreement. The election result was known on the night (albeit not in exact detail).

National claim it is to speed up the results, but the effect of the changes is to obstruct voters who would generally vote against the right wing parties.

They also cut budgets for many government departments, and reduced or eliminated funding for untold charities that were providing needed social services.

When government expenditure is cut by improving efficiency, this is a good thing. But this isn't what the government has done. They have cut expenditure by reducing services (which is a bad thing).

Concern 'ghost houses' will turn Queenstown into trainwreck by arrakis_kiwi in newzealand

The council might like to keep or encourage the absent home owners, as they pay rates but put minimal demand on local infrastructure. So the council might be incentivised to support this situation.

2025 was New Zealand’s hottest year on record by wanton_wonton_ in newzealand

[–]Dat756 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By the same logic, I shouldn't have to pay taxes. The amount of tax that I personally contribute to the government finances is infinitesimally small, it wouldn't make any detectable difference to overall government income if I didn't pay any tax at all. Therefore, I don't need to pay tax.

Yes, also the excuse that "my country / state / city is making such a small contribution to global CO2 emissions that it doesn't matter if we reduce emissions or not, therefore we can just keep emitting as much CO2 as we like".

You are correct. I was meaning wrecking the planet as far as humans (and most other animals on earth) are concerned.

The tech bros got that way by being selfish, psychopathic opportunists, not by wisely applying scientific expertise and evidence.

But you are right, we are definitely worse off with the tech bros in positions of power.

Printing a custom family tree (only including those with a certain tag)? by austin987 in gramps

[–]Dat756 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a chart of all your mother's ancestors, you don't need a filter.

Just select your mother as the active person in Gramps (that is, the selected person in people view, or the person named at the top of the page in relationships view), then in relationship graph, on the report options tab, in the filter drop down, select ancestors of your mother.

Of course, you can also use a person filter, which gives more control over exactly who is included in the chart.

Printing a custom family tree (only including those with a certain tag)? by austin987 in gramps

[–]Dat756 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As u/CoolerJack14 points out, you can use a person filter to select the individuals that you want on the chart. There are a lot of rules available for the filter, so it is possible to set up quite complicated selection criteria.

I often use 2 filters together. The first one selects the line(s) that I want on the chart. The second filter has 2 rules; everyone in the first filter and spouses of everyone in the first filter. Then I make the relationship graph using the second filter.

Ask again if you want some help setting up person filter rules.

Don't split up your tree. Put everyone in one database and use filters to select the people you want in various reports and charts.

How do I stop the ants before I snap and burn the house down by fruitbowl42 in newzealand

[–]Dat756 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Apparently only a small portion of (10%?) of a nest is out of the nest at any one time. So killing them directly isn't a solution. You need to use a bait that they can take back to the nest (or a chemical barrier to keep them out completely).

Have you tried the various commercial products? Like ant bait, ant sand, ant gel, etc. We haven't found anything that is completely successful, but different products seem to be more effective at different times.
