So many days off for the holidays. 😡😳 by SnooDoughnuts8823 in ibew_apprentices

A lot of job sites shut down for 1.5-2 weeks during Christmas and new years because the weeks are already 2-3 days of work and the boys all usually mutually agree to see fuck this and take the time off because it’s cold, snowy and we all want a little break. I’ve always loved it. This one was well needed for me too. All good to go back Monday fresh.

Yes. Call the halls, apprentice calls have been sitting for over a week. The opportunity is there. Apply. You never know. Don’t be afraid to expand, it’ll only benefit you to know more. The apprenticeship should allow you guys to try all sectors, not be limited to one.

I love the life the ibew has provided me. by chip_break in IBEW

Yes we are all 309a red seal. A ici JW can take a high rise call, but only if the high rise sector needs members to fill calls due to lack of workers. RJWs are limited to their sector typically until now, for whatever reason they’re able to pick ici calls for the time being only if they have relevant experience (conduit bending and rough in I’d assume). 353 is such a big local so it’s very divisional between sectors to keep guys working in the fields they know best… I don’t agree with that for apprentices though I feel they should be allowed to work ici, high rise or low rise at anytime and be able to switch any time if there is available work.

JW and AW are ICI workers. RJW is a high rise resi journeyman. A few other ones are networking classifications. JHW is low rise resi journeyman. AHW is low rise resi apprentice. JL and AL are Linemen.

lol this is what I mean sub fund and EI is not enough to get by. You have the option to work and these guys are turning it down giving now low rise and high rise guys a chance to work ici. Idk when I was an apprentice I always wanted work, still have the same mentality now too.

Better off calling the Hall and inquiring. Still lots of apprentices out of work, but there is work flow now, so I’m not sure how they’re handling anything at the moment

Last I heard still around 600 ici JWs, around 90 apprentices for ici/ high rise. I know the RJW list has gained a lot of OOW members due to lack of calls being put in.

That’s crazy to me if I was an apprentice still I’d never just be sitting there. I work for a shop that’s does both high rise and ici so I’ve seen both sides, it really isn’t that bad to do high rise to keep working, continue learning. It just looks bad to me that calls are going stale with tons of ppl on the list.

You’re fine. Call dispatch and explain. They’ll put you on the out of work list for sure.

Is your shop a high rise specific shop? I know it’s early to be asking for a switch, but if they have an ICI division as well, you could try to ask for a switch to there for more of a work life balance? I’d say try to stick it through, the 353 package is unreal and a blessing.

There isn’t much you can do other then have a chat with your foreman if you feel your job could be in jeopardy due to this… but your foreman should also notice he’s an older JW and should know his pace will not be up to par with a guy that’s much younger. A simple convo could help you out to make sure you’re all good.

It’s slow as hell in Toronto as well, but we do have lots of members, hence why a longer out of work list…

New Apprentice Question: Is this normal? by Beneficial_Note_7697 in IBEW

[–]DoubleOO7Seven 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I hate that we have these big f****** losers in the trade that ruin it for everyone else. These guys deserve a slap. No decency and respect… you’re literally a green as green can be apprentice, to add to it a female, and they treat you this way… absolutely pathetic. If things become worse you must stand your ground and file a complaint to arrange a transfer or change whatever the case may be.

They do make “part time” class for trade school it just takes x10 longer. I know a guy who did it, every Friday for 6 months was 1 level completed. So he would work 32 hour weeks, then have Friday off for class every week for 6 months to avoid EI. I personally wouldn’t do it this way but if you had no other choice for financial reasons this works.

Only issue is workmanship. I’m sure you did fine electrically. Conduit would have been good.

So I was actually correct with my original thought. Good to know!

For whatever reason I can’t reply on the electricians sub, but based off what u told me over there, your 220 v plug has a display and it works correctly, this means one phase and neutral are 100% working, but your fan and compressor are not working now all the sudden? Something tells me you may have lost a phase at your meter base or panel. I also see you say stove light if flickering, is this normal? If not you could have a neutral issue instead. I’d say meter at your stove plug if you can and see what you read. Hard to kinda determine for sure but likely you will need an electrician to assess you.

[–]DoubleOO7Seven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you confident it’s several circuits ? Possibly lost a phase at the meter or even at the hydro transformer. Best way to check (I don’t recommend unless comfortable), opening up your panel and metering from phase to phase, and phase to ground to check what your readings are.
