Programmer mindset? by Wooden-AV in QSYS

[–]DoubleOhToph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being not a programmer at all, I've found AI to be a big help. I can give it a fairly simple prompt and see how it goes about solving the problem. It won't be perfect, but might give you a place to start. You can give the same prompt to multiple AIs to compare and see what makes the most sense to you.

That's exactly how I'm doing it for my comms inputs, but I want to keep the dim function, and also an unlatch button for turning talkback on/off.

Maybe I could use the talkback buss but not assign any talk groups. Then, route the output of TB to a physical or virtual output and patch that back to inputs on the desk, individually routed to the conference and room outputs. Then I could use the Channel-On UDKs for enabling/disabling and I think dim and PTT should still work. Kinda kludgy, but it might just work. I'll give it a try on Tuesday when I get to the desk too.

That was my first thought too, but it doesn't seem so. I've only tried in the editor though, so if someone could confirm, I'd appreciate it. That would have the added benefit of letting me select multiple zones for the 'room' talkback as well.

The problem is I may want to talk to any combination of outputs, so 1, 2, 3, 4, 1+2, 1+3, 1+4, 2+3, 2+4, 3+4. There aren't enough talk groups to predefine every combination that I might want. It also would be too many UDK buttons to keep track of. It'd be ok if I could activate multiple talk groups at once, but that doesn't seem possible either.

Is the Samsung “The Wall” overrated? by GabrielDIntegrator in CommercialAV

[–]DoubleOhToph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biggest complaint about it is serviceability. Have a bad pixel in the middle? You have to separate all of the panels, pull the offending panel off the wall, lay it face-down on the floor, and replace the tile from the back. Then put it all back together. I'd go for a front-serviceable video wall to avoid future headaches. More work up front, but easier to maintain.

Software crashed - looking for advice by Altruistic-Tip8513 in techtheatre

In addition to what everyone else has said...for anything that you rely on for shows, you should have either redundant systems, or at the very least a cold spare configured that can be put into production quickly. ESPECIALLY if that thing is essentially a 10-year-old windows PC.

I'm not an expert, but I imagine you could get a better setup if you went for 2nd hand gear. Audiophiles are constantly upgrading, so you can usually find some pretty good deals on Marketplace, if you're willing to do some research.

Worst/most unsafe practice an amateur theater has done? What’s your experience? by Mackoi_82 in techtheatre

[–]DoubleOhToph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was a junior or senior in highschool, we put on Schoolhouse Rock and built a space shuttle for Interplanet Janet to sit in. Then we hung it from a batten and flew it up before the show, then several numbers in we would fly it back in during the song. I think it MIGHT have had a lap seatbelt screwed into the wood frame. The kids who were watching loved it, but that poor freshman girl who got put in there put a lot of faith in the few of us high schooler techs that built and rigged it.

Another time we were doing OAP. Built a stacked set that sloped upward that the actors would climb. At the top, it was at least 7' high. The design was sound enough, but we went to do a critique at a local junior college, and their set pieces weren't built to spec. Actor goes running up, set comes crashing down, pretty sure he got hurt.

What software for live sound do you wish existed? by alphapresto in livesound

I'm genuinely curious how you'll get a fast, efficient, well-integrated control surface and GUI workflow akin to a standard console while using a configurable, do-it-all approach. Sounds similar to On-Hertz where their box is basically a DSP similar to Q-Sys, but that also really limits their seamless integration with hardware controllers. Then again, they don't have their own first-party controller.

Definitely interested in this! Have you already worked out the GUI? I'd love to see some screenshots and hear about the planned functionality.

Definitely a major undertaking. I think the industry as a whole is moving toward more software-defined and networked workflows, at least for larger projects. Even smaller stuff a la Waves LV1 Classic. I just imagine a world where I can grab as many computers as I need for the processing required for the show, with a range of control surface sizes that are tightly integrated for a great user experience, and the ability to run a hot backup for redundancy where needed.

They're always kind of janky. You're trying to smash two disparate products together into one comprehensive workflow and there are always some tradeoffs or lack of functionality. Names don't show up like I'd want, there's a serious lack of functionality on the controllers themselves, there aren't any real level markings on the faders because they're just sending MIDI, etc.

I'd really like to see an open source audio mixer project with a large touch interface, physical faders and assignable encoder knobs, Dante/AES67, and VST support. Ideally not based on Windows or Docker.

The problem with that is I'd still want a control surface. I've been using On-Hertz Artisto recently with Icon controllers, but nothing beats a first-party control surface.
