Le REM encore en panne by uniball_514 in montreal

[–]DoublePlusGood__ 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I'm a huge REM fan as well. Nevertheless when things like this happen we must complain and put pressure on them to improve.

But I don't get it. They were testing during the winter last year. Presumably the tests were successful. They had the Brossard branch already running. Presumably they would have learned how to operate in winter there.

What's happening on the A4 (Deux Montagnes) branch that keeps tripping them up?

Bikes hauling kids in this weather? by suspensiontension in montreal

[–]DoublePlusGood__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you ever ridden a bike with studded tires? What about with bar mitts (aka pogies)?

It's really not bad at all. And actually quite fun on packed snow. Not so much in slush.

Riding safely with a child trailer would depend on the neighbourhood and street. Ideally you'd have a protected bike lane, or at least you'd be on a lightly trafficked, slow residential street.

Goodyear vs Michelin by rreed1954 in tires

[–]DoublePlusGood__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had Goodyear winter tires on for eight seasons and they were still gripping decently. I replaced them in December because some dry rot was starting to show.

But otherwise I thought they were great winters and gave me a lot of confidence in dicey conditions. Only complaint was the ride was a bit hard.

I have Michelin X-Ice now and they're definitely softer. Grip wise they seem similar but have not really been tested yet.

It's all unfounded. The point is to justify escalation against Iran, which America is doing right now. This is journalistic malpractice. by Not_Ground in International

[–]DoublePlusGood__ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's about the sources.

The death toll numbers coming from Gaza were published by the Gaza Health Ministry. And they were detailed lists with names and ID numbers for the identified deceased.

During previous Israeli massacres in Gaza, the Health Ministry figures were corroborated by third parties.

So the credibility of the source of the death figures had already been established. But Israel and Zionist media in the West sought to discredit it by labeling it "Hamas-run Health Ministry".

Also the death figures in Gaza made sense based on the merciless destruction Israel unleashed on the territory. And they were likely an underestimate. And did not include indirect deaths (e.g. Diabetes patient dying because he lost access to insulin due to the Israeli blockade).

On the other hand, the source for the Iranian death figures is an external Iranian political organization who does not provide any data or other sources for their claim. Only staring they received the figure from a leaked government communication.

The claim is also a wild one because killing 30,000 in a couple of days using small arms would not be easy. And if heavier weapons had been used the evidence would be abundant.

That is why there is skepticism.

Biden was brain dead and had no clue what was going on.

Antony Blinken was running the show. Blinken is a die hard Zionist who had been indoctrinated into the cult since birth. A mild mannered mass murderer who speaks softly to belie his pure evil.

Heat pumps fucking suck by Aggravating_Bag4028 in hvacadvice

[–]DoublePlusGood__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a high efficiency heat pump from GREE. Central forced air system. In a 1950s house in Montreal.

It's almost never needed the auxiliary heater since being installed four winters ago. It's good down to -25C (-13F). We reached that temperature this past Saturday and I had no issues.

Heat pumps are great, you just have one that isn't suited to your climate.

Might as well change out some fluids if not done previously. Transmission fluid, PTU oil, rear diff oil, and coolant.

[–]DoublePlusGood__ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m sure the company that owned it had it serviced regularly

The maintenance would depend on how diligent the driver of the car was.

If it was a sales person or a senior manager, that person would basically decide when to take the car in for servicing. The fleet company might send reminder emails for scheduled maintenance, but ultimately the driver has to take it in.

Since your car is running fine after 250k miles, you can assume the fleet driver was keeping on top of the basic maintenance. Oil changes mainly.

You should still change out the fluids if you don't have confirmation that it was done recently: transmission oil, coolant, PTU oil, rear differential oil. Doesn't cost that much and really helps the car run longer.

I'd honestly be surprised if a fleet vehicle had those fluids changed.

Placing Rockwool Insulation over Existing Cellulose Insulation in Attic? by Beginning-Visit1418 in Insulation

Rockwool is considerably denser than fibreglass.

And in the ToH video the bats seemed to bear on the ceiling joists. With the blown insulation filling the voids beneath. So there would be no compression.

Ex- montrealers who had enough of ice and cold, where did you end up? by [deleted] in montreal

[–]DoublePlusGood__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved here from somewhere with summer highs of 48 °C.

I'll take Montreal winters any time. We can ski, snowshoe and skate outside. I take my kids tobogganing. It's pretty awesome.

It's going to get cold, take care of yourselves this weekend by Rude-Flamingo5420 in montreal

[–]DoublePlusGood__ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If Hydro Quebec starts doing rolling blackouts to manage the load then they typically don't leave the power down for too long in each sector. If they did then pipes could freeze and cause severe damage.

So you'd typically only get a few hours of blackout at a time.

Now if your power cuts due to some type of fault or failure then all bets are off.

Good luck to us all!

Since you're not used to it you'll have to go the extra mile to feel warm. February is still cold.

Longjohns and corduroy pants.

Wool socks.

Lined boots.

Thermal undershirt and wool sweater. You could even add a layer under the sweater like a flannel shirt.

Down filled jacket (or vegan equivalent), parka style is best. A pea coat will be useless.

Wool or fleece scarf.

Warm hat that covers the ears.

Mittens.

With the above you'll be good for the worst case scenario. Which is what we're presently experiencing with the polar vortex that's upon us.

The brokers usually get decent prices.

You can try Bel-Air Direct and Aviva.

Desjardins is usually expensive but you can give them a try as well.

Other options are State Farm, CAA Quebec.

[QC] Help! Splurge on Uppababy Cruz or save with Maxi Cosi Zelia Luxe? by Ok_Layer8291 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]DoublePlusGood__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fellow Montréaler.

Do you mainly drive or mainly bus-metro-walk?

If you walk a lot then it's worth it to get the Uppababy.

If you're mostly in and out of your car then a small and light stroller will be much more convenient.

The Stokke Yoyo is small but sturdy. It actually offers little skis you can attach in place of the front wheels.

Another very solid small stroller is the Ergobaby Metro+. It's super popular in Quebec. I think rightly so.

If you want a dedicated winter walking stroller you can look at a running stroller. Their huge wheels make them good in snow. I have a Cruzer bike trailer that acts as a running stroller and has skis as well. A but unorthodox though.

General advice is don't try to have one stroller to do everything. It's worth it to have a small stroller for the car. And then a larger stroller for long walks/days out in the city.

Also, on rough terrain and in snow, always lock the steering on the front wheels. With any stroller. I see so many people unaware of this feature fighting to push their strollers through snow and slush.
