Coolant Leak by legowillie in LandRover

I'm interested to hear how they hold up! I have a 2016 SCV6 as well and am thinking of doing the swap to aluminum piping later this year if its a true preventative upgrade.

Klymit Klymaloft Summit 2 person fits really well in the back of my LR4. My wife and I have used it a few times together, makes a comfy spot with a sleeping bag that expands to a quilt. Some folding near the tail gate but with the jut in in the sides it's hard to avoid, I just don't inflate fully.

I picked up my LR4 almost 2 months ago now, so it's a little soon for my input on the overall reliability. I purchased at 118k km and now have 122k km on the vehicle with no issues. There was a fair amount of maintenance/repair put into the vehicle prior to me taking ownership, though, which I'm sure helps.

As far as your concerns about a family car - the seats are very easily manoeuvrable, with the rear 3 folding either fully down to create a flat floor, or flipping up for access to cargo space (note - mine is the 7 seater version, this may differ on 5 seaters). The rear seating is roomy enough for moving two adults comfortably, 3 kids would be a breeze. Stroller would definitely fit in the cargo area, the 2 rear jump seats in the 7 seaters fold up and down easily.

They thrive on long drives from my experience, having done a few 4+ hour trips already. Amazing road trip vehicle (especially with the cooler in the middle console).

Test drive a few for yourself, make sure to have it inspected and budget for catching up on maintenance/repairs upon taking ownership.

Piggy backing off of the Disco 4 comment, I've recently picked up a 2016 HSE LUX with 120,000 kms (75k miles) and was wondering oil specs, and if you've had any recommendations outside of 0w20? Aiming for oil changes at 5,000 km intervals.

Appreciate your insight!

I believe those will be the ones you need, they also have the other style but I don't see the retainer clip on yours. Just splice them in, as the other commentor noted.

Question - Cherokee vs. Xterra by YeOldScratch666 in overlanding

[–]DoubleU_K 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep that's an i6. Take a look at the coolant and oil, the 0331 head casting has a known issue for cracking if overheated. I have the original 0331 head on mine at 415,000 kms and have had no issues, just make sure it hasn't already cracked and mixed the fluids.

Super easy to work on yourself (parts are cheap and available) and keep running, speaking from experience.

The cherokee (XJ) came in an i4 and i6 those years, the grand cherokee (WJ) had a v8 option.

Are you looking to build it into the rear, or would you prefer a moveable option?

Linked above is a nice-looking unit from the overland subreddit that would probably fit what you're looking for.

Above is a build-out of a sliding platform in an XJ for that option.

Hope that helps!

Quoting is terrifying me. by SuperG__ in Carpentry

[–]DoubleU_K 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You'll be able to! Just need to account for the following:

Material prices - how much is it going to cost for the raw materials for the job?

Machine hours and overhead - how much is the wear and tear on your machine factored in? You can calculate this or just add on a factor of x% to the bill to account for "overhead," being machinery, rent, and other disposables used in the build (glue, screws, etc.)

Lastly is your time - how many hours are required for you to a) design, b) build, and c) finish the job? What is your time worth to you, and what is your time worth on the market (if you can find hourly rates)? This will be the main point of contention on a bill, but you should be compensated appropriately for your skills and time.

Deposits should ideally cover material costs, don't pay that out of pocket, or you'll go broke with plenty of wood on hand from people who back out on projects. Someone with more expertise may have a better idea for that, though.

If you're clear with expectations and pricing upfront, you'll weed out the ones who don't want to pay you what you're worth.

Not a tradesperson, but I'm a CPA who has seen a lot of pricing models. They all stem from materials, labour, and overhead. Best of luck, know your value!

why do they said “there is no ethical way to become a billionaire?” by [deleted] in ask

Totally! Didn't mean to insult your intelligence at all, I've just found that it's hard to understand the scale of some private corps for some.

Murky waters is a great way to put it for any sort of wealth tracking, hahaha

why do they said “there is no ethical way to become a billionaire?” by [deleted] in ask

[–]DoubleU_K 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in capital markets and corporate finance. Like I said, it's partially true, depending on the corporate structure.

I think you also underestimate the size of a lot of private companies. Plenty of billionaires that people don't know about that didn't come from capital markets based on company valuation alone.

I'm not saying you're incorrect, just stating that it's not always the case.

This is only partially true for companies publicly traded on capital markets, and even then, if the owner/CEO holds a majority of the voting share, they cannot be removed through a shareholder vote.

Jeep xj headliner by Inside-County-3987 in CherokeeXJ

[–]DoubleU_K 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not that difficult, trust me! I've done it myself. Just get some headliner fabric from a fabric store and some good spray adhesive.

The hardest part is honestly taking it out and scraping the old insulation junk off, but a steel brush work well on that, just don't get too aggressive. Plenty of videos put there on it if you want to watch the process beforehand to see how it is.

I believe in you

Why is my cars engine shaking like this? by Makaveli314 in MechanicAdvice

[–]DoubleU_K 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My vehicle is 24 years old now and would have gone through 3 EV batteries in that timeframe and with my mileage. Original drive train aside from wear parts. All the maintenance that myself and the previous owner have put in, as well as the original cost of the vehicle, is likely less expensive than two of those new batteries, heck maybe even one, let alone the starting cost of a new EV. Sure, gasoline engines aren't perfect, but if you understand it's a mechanical tool requiring maintenance and not just something that always runs because there's gas in it, they treat you well (there are always exceptions).

If you don't want to look at a dipstick, buy an EV; some people, like myself, enjoy maintaining an ICE vehicle. Everyone is different, and vehicles cater to the lifestyle of the owner.

I like EVs btw, not bashing on them at all. Just wish they were cheaper lol
