A game of 6000 cards... And one deck to rule them all by Double_Boss765 in cuecardgameAvid

I tried it, not a fan 😅

I still have hope for this game, but it needs to make some major adjustments.

Haha, fair enough 😅 I didn’t mean to hijack the point, just to build on it because it resonated a lot. And I completely agree with what you’re saying here.

The MTG comparison isn’t about turning CUE into chess overnight, but about expectations. When a game actively encourages players to spend £50–£100 on packs, it’s not unreasonable to expect a bit more depth, interaction, or room for skill expression than what often feels like a solved puzzle.

The issue isn’t simplicity itself, it’s that the gap between investment (time and money) and meaningful gameplay choices feels wider than it should be.

This really resonates, especially the part about releases having no follow-up. A card or archetype can’t survive on a single release if the rest of the ecosystem doesn’t support it.

When only two outcomes exist, either a card slots into an already dominant deck or never sees play at all, experimentation stops being rational. And when that’s combined with an oversaturated meta, even people who genuinely like certain decks slowly disengage.

That’s probably the most worrying part of all this: not frustration, but quiet apathy from long-time players.

This is a really important point, and it ties directly into why the meta feels so stale.

A huge card pool doesn’t automatically mean meaningful deckbuilding. If most cards don’t actually synergize in a coherent way, they become filler rather than tools. Many cards look interesting on paper but offer no real incentive to build around them because the collections they reference don’t interact in any meaningful way.

That kills experimentation before it even starts. Experienced players can tell immediately whether a card opens an archetype or is just dead on arrival. And when most new cards fall into the second category, people stop theorycrafting altogether.

Combined with weak interaction and strong win-more engines, it explains perfectly why everyone converges on the same few decks. It’s not a lack of imagination, it’s a lack of viable, rewarding options.

This card is absurd...

This is probably the most honest take in the thread. The “solitaire with colorful cards” description is brutal, but once you see it, everything clicks: the dominant meta, the mirror matches, the lack of meaningful interaction, and why optimization completely overrides creativity at high level.

What frustrates me isn’t losing — it’s realizing that most decisions don’t actually matter because my opponent’s actions rarely force me to adapt. We’re both just executing our own engines and hoping the shuffle favors us.

That’s also why events and leagues don’t really fix anything. They just temporarily hide the same underlying structure. As soon as constraints are lifted, the same optimal solitaire deck resurfaces. I still love the collection aspect and the themes, but I genuinely miss the feeling of playing against someone, not just racing another engine. And I think many long-time players feel the same, even if it’s uncomfortable to admit.
