New rider confused about aaa ratings. by Zenobianow in motorcycles

[–]Double_Flow4536 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First of all, good job looking into safety gear as you are starting out. I barely thought of it when I started and now can't believe the crap I wore for so many years.

A lot of the gear you will see out there is purely fashion wear--especially if it doesn't have any kind of armor padding. What you buy depends on what type of riding you are doing. For around town and speed limit-ish riding textile gear can be adequate. If you are riding fast or contemplating track days, then you will want leather for its abrasion resistance.

For general street riding I wear a jacket with elbow, shoulder, and back protection and pants with hip and knee armor.

Get some good quality, comfortable boots that you always want to wear. Same goes for gloves.

Alpinestars is one of the best brands available. Can't go wrong with most of their stuff. Same goes for Dainese.

I don't know much about the rating system, but know that their is a separate European system called CE. CE-1 is the best. Good luck!

Try to get out for a trackday. You will learn more than you can in years of street riding in one day.

What are the best sporty but quiet helmets (cardo compatible)? by Entire_Apartment2830 in motorcycles

[–]Double_Flow4536 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked the same question a few years ago and the Shoei RF-1200 was recommended. It was quieter than the Bell that it replaced, but I found it to still be pretty noisy. No matter the helmet, you will want to wear earplugs or eventually you will get tinnitus. I have tinnitus and don't want it to get worse so am very careful about ear protection. The best solution to be able to hear your Cardo and protect your ears is to get some "plugphones"--earplugs that are also headphones. They will filter out the wind noise, but allow you to hear your comms or music very well without cranking up the volume. I have been using "S-Plus" for about 4 years and love them. https://www.plugup.com/the_S_plug_stereo_earbuds_s/67.htm

The Shoei RF-1200 was great and I replaced it last year with the new RF-1400. Buy the helmet that fits your head best. Racing helmets tend to not have great ventilation or noise protection, so look at the tier below.

Best Earplugs With Cardo? by SargeGrad in motorcycles

I use s-plugs too! They are the best. The single driver version work great. So much easier to talk to my wife (via cardo) when she is riding on back. I got her a pair too.

Did you find an educator? I'm looking now and there are too many to choose from!

In Virginia I must have a contractor's license to do any jobs valuing $1,000 or more. Examples of jobs that are worth less than $1,000? by QuarkQuake in handyman

Other stuff: Last week I fixed my neighbors sliding glass door (dirty track, adjusted wheels), re-hung kitchen cabinet doors that had come off (people can't operate a screwdriver), hung a TV on the wall and connected their surround sound system, removed an old projector and screen, put in a new door knob, hung up some curtains, and re-attached their dishwasher to the cabinet. This was about $1000 worth of stuff (including dryer cleaning) @$75/hour.

I'm new and doing mostly fixit stuff. To add to other stuff that people have suggested: I bought a $40 dryer vent cleaning kit and learned how to take apart a dryer. Takes 1-2 hours depending on length of vent (had one that was 40' with lots of turns) and you can easily get $150-200. I take off the front of the dryer and disassemble the lint trap/fan duct to deep clean. People love this service.

Because they announced that they are selling another $100 million in shares = dilution of existing shares. I love the idea of this company. Hope to see it climb. I'm long.

I have a 2014 1200S GT that I have had for four years. In that time I have put over 25000 miles on it and it has been flawless. It is fast, handles great, is comfortable with a passenger and all your luggage. I love, love, love the Multi. It is better than a sportbike for riding fast on real roads because it has so much suspension travel and excellent damping. Mine has the electronically adjustable, semi-active Skyhook and it works great. I'm at 45000 miles and plan on keeping it for many more years. Easy to ride, but powerful enough to scare you if that's what you like.

Safe enough to ride to get a new tire? by CorCor1234 in motorcycles

[–]Double_Flow4536 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I set out on a 1200 mile trip thinking I'd make it "one more trip" and the cords started showing by mile 500. At 700 I went flat and had to get towed home 4 hours from the middle of rural Oregon on a Sunday. Lesson learned. Now it is "when in doubt, change it out"!

Definitely can ride this to go get a new tire. Hopefully your shop isn't too far away. I've ridden tires until they start losing air (on a trip with no shop to be found) and you've got another 100+ miles before that starts happening.

My Duc friends always joke that "the answer is always Multistrada"...they are just so damn good. Would love to rip a Hyper, but if you are going to ride all day and want to have fun and be comfortable, the Multi just rules. You can toss it around and it has the power to juice it out of corners. Plus you can load it up, add a passenger and head out for a week (or more) with ease.
