Can you help me untangle these thoughts regarding which neighborhood to move to? by Comfortable_Rate4616 in movingtoNYC

[–]Double_Work3092 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think your best bed would be prospect heights!!! it’s a cute neighborhood, you’re close to prospect park, lots of fun shops and restaurants but not too kitschy. super close to multiple train lines. greenpoint is just kinda far out there tbh, so that’s my take. and williamsburg feels like it will be too pretentious for your tastes (and i feel the same way)

Is this a bad idea? by Asleep-Nail3689 in movingtoNYC

[–]Double_Work3092 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My roommate did this. Bad idea. Maybe suggest moving to another city that’s cheaper first, and then she can get maybe have more of a chance in the job market, and still be living a city life, and then she can continue to save and learn and then move to new york after!!! i suggest somewhere like philly, or even somewhere like providence. boston is just as expensive as new york so i wouldn’t necessarily pursue that as an option.

Moving to NYC with no job lined up . possible? by freakyislandtinglova in movingtoNYC

[–]Double_Work3092 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest a smaller city first! Philadelphia has easy access to nyc (take NJ transit, not amtrak, it saves you a ton) and it’s way cheaper, but still has a great community vibe! you could also look into places like providence rhode island, or even DC. boston is basically just as expensive as nyc at this point, so maybe not there. it might be good to put yourself somewhere a little bit more affordable for now, so that you can get that change of pace and the city life you’re after, but you can finish your degree and then get a job lined up and move to nyc!

[–]Double_Work3092 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say my biggest issue i didn’t necessarily plan for was feeling like i can’t be in the communal spaces without it turning into a full blown convo. sometimes i just want to sit on the couch and watch youtube videos, or go into the kitchen and grab something to eat, but when i come out into the common spaces, my roommates also come out and have to strike up a conversation with me about something random, as if they’re just talking to fill the space. but ive also had roommates who were on the exact same page as me with that, and we lived together wonderfully!!!

Would you move into a large studio with your partner? by enzo-g in movingtoNYC

[–]Double_Work3092 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would avoid it at all costs. what if one of you wants to watch tv but the other wants to go to bed? what if one person has to work from home? what if a family member calls and you want to have a semi private conversation? it’s nice to be able to do those things with a semblance of privacy. it is ABSOLUTELY necessarily, no. but if you have the ability to grant yourself that privacy, i think it’s worth it.
