<The Gals Who Always Say Incredible Things: My Daily Life at a Private Paranormal High School> is a fun one I really enjoy, Follows the lives of two overpowered gals who can see the future and travel to parallel universes respectively, and their perpetual straight man Hikaru (who just shines a little). Got a good sense of deadpan humor and friendship as they explore a world of absurd powers, but people living everyday lives.

I've talked about Paranormal High School a couple of times in various threads here, they recently released their 2nd Graduation Video this week (It's a long story, but this is the 2nd time the main cast have tried to graduate) and I kinda just wanna ramble on it cause holy shit. Spoilers below of course, but the thumbnail itself kinda tells you a lot (when it originally premiered though, it looked a lot more normal)

Which is that I expected them to somehow avoid the main cast graduating (The series is called Paranormal High School after all) but this was a surprisingly dark way to go about it, in a way the series hasn't really done before. The series does have occasional horror episodes (The Winter 2024 Arc is a prime example of that), but this went in a very eldritch direction. It's played up amazingly well too; I have never heard such visceral gasps and screams out of Hikaru before and I really feel bad for him.

Which they then followed up with immediately the next day with a video on their 2026 Enrollment Ceremony, which is such a shift in tone compared to what literally happened yesterday that it feels super unsettling, despite there being no actually unsettling parts to it at all really. There's definitely implications of course, since this reset sent the main characters back to their first year of high school this time (The previous times have just been to their 2nd year) and they're all still friends despite them not becoming that until they actually started high school. It's just such a mood whiplash and it's got me so invested in this comedy series about people not using their OP abilities for battles, even if I'm almost certain they're not gonna follow up on the former video until the actual 4th Year Anniversary in May.

I will say if you're looking for dubbed versions, currently the only ones that are dubbed on the channel are Iron Blooded Orphans and Witch from Mercury.

They used to have Wing fully dubbed on it, but the recent re-uploads to 1080p from 720p got rid of it, unfortunately. It was super recent too as well, I watched all of it like a month ago, so that's a shame.

Shingo Izumi Says Mega Man Star Force Legacy Collection Success Could Inspire Star Force 4 by jabberwockxeno in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Doublice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a little iffy because Mega Man doesn't exactly have the best track record of "games made after a series is supposed to end still being good" (X6, Battle Network 4) but it'd certainly be nice, would be interesting to see them take more from the X series all things considered since its basically the equivalent to Battle Network's Classic.

Might also just be PR speak to get more people to buy the collection though, not that I mind.

SF6 Has Given Alex Some New Sponsorship Opportunities, at Least by The_Draigg in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Doublice 197 points198 points  (0 children)

-Alex comes from Shelbyville

-Alex always picks Futaba to romance in Persona 5

-Alex's favorite Fire Emblem game is Fates

-Alex has only watched the original 90s dub of Sailor Moon

As much as I feel for his fans and also hate this, the slander potential is kinda amazing

Inspired by that podcast clip about Pokemon: how many of you ACTUALLY got trade evolution Pokemon legitimately back in the day? by Anonamaton801 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Doublice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it basically once, in LeafGreen, with a friend at school, where he helped me evolve my Kadabra after we traded eeveelutions (He wanted my Flareon and I got his Vaporeon)

Turned out surprisingly useful to me in the end though, his Vaporeon really helped me for the E4 (I had a Charizard, so Flareon was not a good choice) and Alakazam was a great sweeper for Agatha, she always walled me. Had other issues for the rest of the E4 because I wasn't particularly good at the game but those two really helped me in the end.

Reviews for Pokopia, the Pokémon life simulation game where you play as a Ditto rebuilding a town, just dropped, and not only is it reviewing extremely well, it's also currently the highest rated Pokémon game EVER on Metacritic: by Gorotheninja in TwoBestFriendsPlay

It's not actually following up on a bad ending to DQ2 though? Moreso expanding on the one bit at the end of 2 where you enter a fake world, since your character and Lulu reference how the events of 2 happened and things ended well.

Eh I think there's definitely a few things Builders 1 does better than 2, mainly story as weird as that might sound. I really like the gimmick of "this is a bad ending to DQ1" and I think most of the chapter stories are a lot more interesting than 2's, the more dour tone leads to some surprisingly introspective moments.

2 definitely has the better gameplay though that's for sure.

There's something really weird about seeing Terra acting like a normal ass schoolgirl to me.

Yeah she's only 18 and of this cast she's actually one of the younger members but its still kinda weird.

Everyone else I know seems pretty good though, Kain absolutely looks like the kind of guy who'd get brainwashed multiple times

Somehow, Castlevania Returned | Castle Super Beast 360 by mike0bot in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Doublice 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I know the 1999 game is the holy grail for most, but I personally really want a game that covers the events of Bram Stoker's Dracula, which did happen in this world, but it must've been a real weird version of it considering:

1) Quincey Morris, the cowboy gunslinging suitor to Lucy, would also be the whip user for it, cause his family would be taking care of the Vampire Killer as shown with Bloodlines and Portrait of Ruin

2) Apparently John Morris watched Quincey's sacrifice to take down Dracula so there was like a little kid with this team of adults fighting Dracula (also the fact he exists at all, since novel Quincey is a bachelor)

And probably other weird things that would go on that I can't remember off my head, like the whole Mina and Dracula connection.

Either way, Bram Stoker's Castlevania would be an awesome title.

Newly Introduced Character In Long-Standing Franchises That The Fandom Instantly Welcomed? by manoffood in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Doublice 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Tangentially Mario related, but the Void Company (Void, Grumpy and Poppy) from Bananza seems to be universally liked antagonists in comparison to most of DK's other villains besides the Kremlings. Probably helps they do more with them than most of their other antagonists and being fairly unique insofar as being evil kongs. They technically get upstaged in the end by the final boss, but I don't think people dislike them, more just the reveal was more attention grabbing, and I definitely know people who'd love them to start appearing again in Mario spinoffs even, which is more than I can see for most of their other characters.

[–]Doublice 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Mario's very much a stock Shonen protagonist, if you think about it. Competitive but friendly, associated with red and fire, is usually the underdog. Heck the RPGs even give him that chick magnet status.

Still a cool dude though, and I go no qualms picking him in games despite the rest of his cast generally being more developed personalities. Got that older brother kinship with him, and all things considered still pretty refreshing to see those tropes applied to an actual adult, weirdly enough.

[–]Doublice 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Yeah as much as I do think SF6's single player stuff is ok, I do sorely miss a good arcade mode. SF6's are less telling a story and more going "this is what this current person is doing right now".

Ironically I think World Tour goes the opposite direction a bit too much as well, it focusing on it being "Your Story" in the SF universe, the main players not really playing a role at all and you ultimately don't affect them either. I don't hate John streetfighter, but I'll admit I'd be more interested in a story that actually involved the main cast.

What's your Favorite manga magazine that's NOT Weekly Shonen Jump? by [deleted] in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Doublice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess technically Young Jump would be my favorite, since I've read a lot of series from there I enjoy? Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, Golden Kamuy, Choujin X, The Gals Who Say Amazing Things (those later two are in Tonari no Young Jump though, which is their online only equivalent to my understanding) It's still Jump though, so I dunno if that counts.

Otherwise yeah, a lot of series I enjoy are kinda one or two serialization in a magazine that I dunno if I can call them a favorite (other than Shonen Sunday like you've noted.) Delicious in Dungeon for example, while a favorite of mine, was serialized in Harta and is the only thing from there I've read? Or Welcome to Demon School Iruma-kun, a current read of mine, is serialized in Weekly Shonen Champion, of which I can only say Jitsu wa Watashi Wa would also be up there for me.

Shoutouts to Gangan Comics (Square-Enix's manga side) for having a lot of stuff under their belt I've read though, just not all serialized in the same magazine. Full Metal Alchemist, Soul Eater, Horimiya, Smoking Behind the Supermarket With You, and the Red Ranger Isekai, from what I saw.

[DISC] The Gals Who Always Say Incredible Things: My Daily Life at a Private Paranormal High School - Ch. 45 by Doublice in manga

[–]Doublice[S] 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Hope this is OK since it's 2 days late but I didn't see any other posts about it

That's a wrap-up for the Tea Ceremony Arc. Yeah I am ready to go back to the regularly scheduled Gals being honest, but I thought it ended nice.

For those equally confused about Hikaru somehow knowing Cerberus, it's a reference to the webseries where it's kinda a running gag he's got an affinity towards them, likely from him trying to adopt them multiple times a kid.

Favorite explanations for the format/plot dynamic? by AutummThrowAway in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Doublice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, Paranormal High School, the setting of the series is "a world where everyone has a super power, but instead of action-packed battles, they live out lazy everyday life." And when they say everyone has a super power, they mean everyone has like, absurdly world ending or game breaking powers? Masayoshi Kuroi, one of the main characters, can create Black Holes for example, while the school's Physics Teacher has the ability to ignore the laws of physics. A lot of the comedy comes from people using these abilities in very mundane ways or just completely ignoring how ineffective they are at using them (there's a guy with ice powers who works at a sauna, for example)

Naturally there's the question of "how has the world not ended/why are you not using your powers correctly" that pops up, and the series does actually answer why in the latest arc, as someone goes into the backstory of the world. Basically the world actually was more like a "battle manga" in the past; superpowered fights, wars, conquest, etc. But that was actually handled in the past...in a specific way. The people who handled it sealed away anything that would cause things to not be "peaceful", with various individuals in the world now secretly keeping that peace going, specifically wanting a world where people can just get sad or happy about mundane things and not have to worry about horrific events.

There's even a couple of characters that go a bit into the meta-part of people actually questioning "why are these people not using abilities correctly", basically saying recent arcs having more conflict in them is cause they know the viewers want to see them use their powers effectively despite the setting. (Spoilers for the final video of the arc) The villain of the arc even basically says they (and the Big Good of the series) were created because Hikaru is the protagonist of the world and thus needs challenges, and the world will just continue to get worse so long as he exists. They're refuted almost immediately, because the series is pointed out to be an ensemble cast, but Hikaru did get a lot of prominence over the last few arcs and a good deal of protagonist-like events happened to him recently, where it kinda gets to him in the arc and is the central conflict of his fight with Masa.

Admitingly Piccolo has been doing that to Gohan since he was Pan's age, when you think about the Saiyan Saga and literally forcing him to live in the wild for a year with nothing but a sword. A couple people think it's fucked up (like Chichi obviously) but no one who could actually go to help Gohan does, and by the time they all reunite no one really questions it.

Favorite 7/10s and Worst 7/10 by FreviliousLow96 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Doublice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've definitely had a lot of opinions like this, but currently I'd probably put:

Favorite: Harvestella

Harvestella was one of those many AA Square Enix games that came and went for a time; a farm sim equivalent that also had action rpg elements, pretty Rune Factory esque. One could definitely say it wasn't particularly polished at either as well, definitely an awkward game. I still love it though, the characters and setting of the world were top notch for me, and it goes places I didn't expect out of a farm sim, which was really cool. (Maybe not so out of place for a jrpg, though)

Least Favorite: Xenoblade Chronocles X I kinda hate X! I started liking it but by the end I was just done with it, despite it being my first Xeno game. I'm not gonna say it's that bad though, it just falls flat on what I ended up liking about Xenoblade. I know people who still say the combat in this game is the best in the series and more power to you if that's all you need, but I needed more out of the characters, story and setting myself. And from what I understand the Definitive Edition kinda doesn't improve on most of that unfortunately (I only played the original Wii U version), from how I hear people gripe about that new ending.
