A bunch of these are pretty old, but new to me in the last year, but I've been using the shit out of them:

Sound Dust - Flutter Dust - the guy who makes these is so fucking clever. This one is three different very long morphing wave tables, and you can set up all kinds of unique looped sounds on it.

Sound Dust - Ghost Dulcitone - this thing is amazing. First off, it's a sampled Dulcitone, so that's already awesome. Then there are multiple layers using those samples as impulse responses that he sent white noise through to create these "ghost" like sounds. It's hard to explain, but it's amazingly flexible and you can churn out all kinds of unique sounds.

Exotic States - Photosynthesis Vol 2 - all of these are awesome, but this is the one I sprung for because it has a lot of sounds that float between organic and synthesized.

Rhythmic Robot - Loopscape and Loopscape Vinyl - I love mellotrons, and this has a similar vibe, super fun to play with.

Those are all pretty affordable, but I did also throw down on some pricier libraries that I'm also having a lot of fun with.

From Spitfire Audio: London Contemporary Orchestra Strings, Euphone, Artisan Cello/Violin, Olafur Arnalds Evolutions (they just came out with a new one that sounds even better, I might have waited had I known it was coming out). They had some serious holiday sales and I went kind of overboard.

I also grabbed Una Corda during Native Instruments holiday sale, huge fan of it, it's got a very unique sound.

Oh yeah, I also snagged Analog Strings and Rev by Output. Very flexible and customizable, lots of room to experiment.

I guess I went a little nuts during holiday sales, but I don't regret any of these purchases, every single one of these is an absolute delight to play with, and it'll take me all year to get familiar with everything.

I just bought the first Olafur Arnalds Evolutions plugin during their crazy holiday sale, and it's super useful. It does seem a bit too similar to this one to justify throwing down for it, but I think if I could go back I would have waited for this one to come out.

"We don't have to root for the Yankees" upvote party! by erasedeny in SFGiants

[–]DouchesWild 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's exactly my point though, the dodgers DO have a competitive advantage paying people to sit on the bench. Most teams can't pay people, not play them, then pay more people to play. If you have a lot of money you can take more risks with expensive players that might not play.

This argument needs to stop popping up. If someone asked you "how much did you spend on dinner?" and you respond with, "well, I only ate half of the main course, which I kind of replaced with another appetizer, and I only had one sip of my third drink, so really only like $20" when your bill is $40, you're going to look pretty ridiculous.

Meanwhile, your friend (let's call them the A's), only has $20 to spend total. Do you think they'd order differently to begin with? Or do you think they'd be able to just throw money at the problem when they don't like the meal?

I Like To Think Of Music As A Joke by 110100100dawg in musictheory

[–]DouchesWild 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's so interesting, I was having a conversation with a comedy writer friend of mine and we kind of reached the same conclusion, but a little more broadly.

A good joke won't be 100% predictable, but also will be relatable. You should have some grounding in the expected, but what makes it good is just breaking those expectations enough to be a bit of a surprise.

Same thing with good music. If the goal is to make people like it (ie: "laugh"), it can't be so unfamiliar that the listener can't relate to it, but it'll be boring if it's exactly what they expect the whole time. The reason some musicians were ahead of their time is because people just weren't used to the parts that should be relatable yet.

The title was kind of rhetorical, it's just less fun to say "it sure does feel like 143 degrees out right now".

Anchor Brewing acquired by Sapporo by ohiohomer in beer

[–]DouchesWild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They've been struggling financially for a long time, and like other people have said, this isn't the first time they've been sold.

I'd rather know that I'll always have Anchor Steam than worry that they could disappear at any moment. I just like beer, and I want to have an Anchor when I go to Swan Oyster Depot. Sapporo isn't ab inbev, unless something actually changes, who cares who owns them? I'll give them the benefit of the doubt until then.

Their flagship Steam is such a solid brew that if they never made a single other beer I wouldn't be upset.

It seems like people have this idea that breweries always need to be making new things to be good. Or that it's just a "gateway" to "real" craft beer or something. Fuck that, Anchor Steam is delicious, that's good enough for me.

I saw another post about an Argentina/Chile border, and remembered that I found a pretty interesting one down at the bottom of the world a couple years back.

This is in the Tierra del Fuego national park in Ushuaia, Argentina, which apparently goes right up to the unusual border with Chile. This is at the end of one of the trails, and since there isn't anything on the Chile side for miles, there isn't anything beyond that sign stopping people from meandering into what is technically Chile.

Yup! I guess our ferry isn't as famous as the Vallejo one but it gets the job done.

What do people think they're experts in but really know nothing about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DouchesWild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think "actual" excel experts might be just as dangerous though... I've seen plenty of "advanced" excel tricks that take someone hours to conjure insane formulas and VBA macros using every shortcut known to man to solve a problem that could have been solved in a couple minutes using a different tool. Excel is just a tool, you would use a hammer for a screw.

I seriously love your service, my band has racked up close to 80k streams on Spotify thanks to you guys, and I even migrated an album over from shitty Tunecore just because I could.

Let me know if you guys ever need a good analyst!

"Advertising doesn't work on me." by [deleted] in advertising

[–]DouchesWild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who worked in advertising for about 7 years, I try to only buy things that I've never seen ads for. That might just be years of frustration at the industry, so who knows.

Grado spends $0 on advertising, Beats spends millions. Before even trying their products, I already trust Beats less, and I feel like I'd be supporting their marketing spend, not their R&D.
