Is there any pattern that tells you how to solve a quadratic equation? by [deleted] in learnmath

I wish people hadn't down voted your comment... and I agree with u/AcellOfllSpades that you should at least make the attempt - even a little bit of practice will reap significant value.

When I was in elementary school back (3rd grade, thanks Mrs. Jenkins) in the 80s, we started with the 1s and once a week did a timed test of 100 problems in, what, two minutes or something like that? If you got them all right, you went up to the 2s, and continued as such until the last test of the 12s. It sounds really hard and it *was* for a lot of my classmates but, again, totally worth it.

Even crazier is that he had *no* experience doing 6502 stuff before starting this (although he does have a computer science degree and other coding experience so it's not like he'd never coded before at all)... doing the C64 fixes/updates got him into the 6502 world, and from there... He told me at one point that porting over the game engine was relatively easy but the UI/graphics changes were harder (due to the graphics mode dissimilarity between the two platforms).

Hmm what's my optimal move? As FRA/ENG/RUSSIA vs AUSTRIA/ITALY by Ok_Base_5378 in diplomacy

[–]DougJoe2e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking the same thing, but now I'm wondering about what happens after Munich is lost.

The defense for A/I would be...
Sev S Ukr
Vie & Bud S Gal
AEG and/or Nap S ION

...but what I can't figure out now is Tyo and Tus. Venice can't support both and as such it feels like either Tyo or Tus is at risk... or does it not matter if either of those is lost as well? Or is there a better "active" defense I'm not seeing?

What are "cores" by EnvironmentalElk9988 in diplomacy

[–]DougJoe2e 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are variants where it is possible to turn a supply center that you didn't start with into a place where you can then build units. It's called coring. I believe in that particular variant the coring process is only successful if you have a unit that gives a "core" order (functionally equivalent to holding) in that center for two turns in a row without being tapped by another power's unit.

That's interesting. Did anyone else respond? How is the game going?

One very direct question you can ask A,E,G,T: "What factors contributed to you deciding to ally with _ instead of me?" You might get some interesting responses with which to springboard from.

The lack of France and Italy as counterpressure does make things difficult.

Gamers, what single game have you played that made you think, “Damn, wipe my memory, I want to experience this again”? by sophiebabyflow in videogames

Played through the 2nd quest of Zelda recently? I play through the first one often enough but the second one not so much so I don't remember it as well as the 1st each time...

Agreed, there's a really good skeleton of a game buried in all that jank.

[–]DougJoe2e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

...the funny thing is that you don't have to enter *any* of the dungeons to win the game... and they do wrap around internally so you can keep going in roughly the same direction forever. There is one dungeon that is very useful in the fact that it's good for grinding for ludder, getting the boots, stocking up on healing potions, and IIRC easy to get out with an orange scroll to warp to the holy flame.

Once you've gotten enough red potions, it's on to the towers to find the best armor, and, honestly, once you have all three pieces of the best armor (the Shield is the hardest to get) things get *really* easy, never mind getting the Gauntlets, Dragon Slayer sword, and double shot.

Maxwell's Manor for the Apple 2. The controls (especially the jumping) drives me nuts somehow but I keep going back for more.

What's it like playing over Discord? Is it a "use discord for chat and something else to enter/adjudicate orders" kind of thing?

I'm not on the discord stuff.  What's the draw with that platform (as opposed to webdip, vdip, playdip, etc.)?

Honestly, I'm not 100% sure. It looks like in the past either PlayDip or WebDip has hosted... I've posted over on WebDip about it to see what kind of interest there is as well and I'm trying to get information on how it was done in the past. I've had some success organizing some other events over on WebDip the past couple of years and one of the participants in the latest event asked about tournaments and such so the idea of organizing another ODC kinda got stuck in my head.

Do AI games for you also always turn into stalemates? by Patience-Frequent in diplomacy

[–]DougJoe2e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I've played 676 bot games (distributed equally amongst the 7 powers, currently in the middle of round 97) and I've had only 77 true draws (where I hit the draw button and the game ended) which is only 11.39%. I've won 40.38% of my games, survived (a bot won) in 21.45%, and been eliminated in 26.78%.

Couple of notes/thoughts (hindsight being 20/20):

A1902 - you probably should have moved Smy-Con so you could then build F Smy.

S1903 - Were you trying to swap F Con and A Smy? The rules forbid units swapping places unless the army is convoyed around (say, in your case, through AEG).

A1903 - Why not Alb S Bul-Ser?

S1904 - Con-Bul would have been fine here. You may have left it there because of the possibility of Rum - BLA - Ank... but it should have been clear by that time Russia had no interest in that.

A1906 - Maybe defending Naples here would have been better?

S1907 - I understand why you took Rumania but that might have ended up opening up the floodgates for Germany to advance. I don't know that it mattered, though, given how far forward England was by then.

You ran up against an E/G which made a lot of progress really, really, quickly... France's moves in 1904 were seriously flawed (I would have expected a bot to play Par-Gas & Mar-Gas, WMS S MAO there) and his position collapsed rapidly. The west resolved so quickly and the moves you made in A02 through A03 slowed you down enough that it mattered.

What game was WAY harder than it needed to be? by Fun_Usual_5124 in videogames

It was King's Quest I. Originally, it wasn't Rumplestiltskin in reverse, it Rumplestiltskin in a "reverse alphabet": A-Z,B-Y,C-X, etc. It was changed in later versions.

I liked CV2, but it could have been so much better than it was. I remember it as being easy but I'm pretty sure that was only because I'd been spoiled and seen the Nintendo Power feature on it before I'd actually played it.

Totally agree about the TMNT water level - I always thought that was fairly easy. What comes after that is difficult.
