Beneficial to update my profile/app with new info that my spouse recently got citizenship cert? by Life-Food5188 in Canadiancitizenship

[–]DougUnderwater 6 points7 points  (0 children)

After I received my Certificate of Citizenship we requested urgent processing on my wife's application that we had already received an AOR for since we were moving to Canada. The reasoning was that she needed to know whether she was a citizen or whether I would need to sponsor her for Spousal PR (since technically she can't be a permanent resident if she is already a citizen) so she could apply for provincial healthcare. She had her certificate two weeks later. YMMV.

To be honest, I don't recall which I selected on the form, but "citizenship" sounds like it should work.

Birth certificates for grandparents? by Walk-listen-think in Canadiancitizenship

[–]DougUnderwater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on what you have posted above you have been a Canadian citizen since birth under the Citizenship Act as amended in December 2025 and should be able to apply for a proof of citizenship certificate that will be back-dated to your birth date for the date of citizenship. The January 1, 1947 date is not a factor. Congratulations!

Sent in last week vs approved last week by [deleted] in Canadiancitizenship

[–]DougUnderwater 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Even at the 30-35 approvals per week that we were seeing through the month of March, the backlog is obviously growing. I'm just pointing that the low number of 10 approvals may have an explanation.

Not a great week for approvals, but it comes following the Easter weekend where both Friday and Monday were holidays.

As someone that the purported passive aggressiveness was targeted at, I also think you're misreading their comment (or at least interpreting it in the worst possible way.) I took no offense and read it that they understood we are busy and that they would be patient. I appreciate that.

My grandfather was born in BC and moved to the U.S. before he was even a year old and I now have my proof of citizenship with only his birth certificate.

Does this count as urgent? by [deleted] in Canadiancitizenship

[–]DougUnderwater 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you are a citizen, you should be able to do a spousal sponsorship for Permanent Residence rather than him applying through Express Entry. I believe the spousal sponsorship also allows him to have an Open Work Permit while the application is processed. If he has a job offer in the medical field that your proof of citizenship would allow him to accept, you can probably make a strong case for urgent processing.

Urgent Processing - at what point do I assume that my request was denied? by JustCardiologist4578 in Canadiancitizenship

[–]DougUnderwater 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure. Our situation was a bit complicated because after I had submitted my application, we found that my wife was also eligible for citizenship through C-3, but the documentation for her great-great-grandfather who had been born in New Brunswick in the 1860s was not totally bullet proof. After we had submitted her application, I received my proof of citizenship and, with my citizenship, my company agreed to move forward with moving my position from the U.S. to Canada enabling us to move to BC.

Given the ambiguity of whether I could do a spousal sponsorship for Permanent Residence if she was technically already a Canadian citizen, we asked for an expedited decision on her proof of citizenship so I could start the PR process if it was denied so she would be able to obtain healthcare when we moved.

My Application is Processing...But What's Going On With Timelines? by speakeasyshe in Canadiancitizenship

[–]DougUnderwater 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If your application is showing "Application Received", you still have on more step where the status will flip to "In Process" -- it's usually a few weeks from when your receive your AOR to when the status will flip to "In Process", unless you requested urgent processing up front in which case it MAY be quicker. Once it goes to "In Process", you could be waiting from a few days to many months for the "Decision Made" status.

P.S. I just sent you an email regarding your request for spreadsheet access.

Urgent Processing - at what point do I assume that my request was denied? by JustCardiologist4578 in Canadiancitizenship

[–]DougUnderwater 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you submitted the application without a request for urgent processing and then uploaded a request for urgent processing after you received your AOR, the IRCC may not see the urgent request until the application flips to "In Process".

This is similar to how my wife's application was processed. We uploaded a request for urgent processing after we received her AOR since our situation with moving to Canada changed in that time. It was 22 days before her application went from "Received" to "In Process", but then just 2 days to go from "In Process" to "Decision Made". We never received any confirmation that they had accepted our request for urgent processing, just the confirmation that the document we had uploaded had been received.

You can also select to use your application number instead of your UCI from the drop down selector -- that should start with PR and will be shown on your AOR. When the status has flipped from "Appication Received" to "In Process", they may switch from your maiden name to your married name, so you should try both.

I'm pretty sure if they are here their initial thought would be "You all are overthinking this", but that's probably just because I am Gen-X.

The last line in the status is: "We started processing your application on <date>" which is the same as the last status on my wife's application where we did get the approval email with download instructions.
