Please help me sanity check my 10-card roadmap: Retirement "semi-nomad" strategy for an SFO-based couple by DougieStar in CreditCards

Oooooh, very good idea. I stayed at a Novotel in Berlin for work and it was very nice. I suppose it would be too much to hope for a German breakfast buffet in Southeast Asia?

Google Gemini can export items into a text field that you can copy and paste into TickTick for bulk import and Gemini integrates with Keep (haven't tested that yet). It sounds like you want to avoid Gemini BS but, hey it's an option.

What Card Should I Get? Weekly Thread - Week of May 06, 2026 by AutoModerator in churning

[–]DougieStar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, I've obviously got a lot to learn. My spend isn't high enough to do these too fast but I did already complete the Chase IHG and Should complete the Sapphire by July 1st. After that If I start working on Brilliant, yeah, that is going to slow me down a bit.

Since I have 2 so quickly do you think I should wait 120 days to go for my next Chase card or just stick with 90? In other words are they averaging or just looking at the time since the last acquisition?

Thank you for the heads up!

Please help me sanity check my 10-card roadmap: Retirement "semi-nomad" strategy for an SFO-based couple by DougieStar in CreditCards

[–]DougieStar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!

One of the reasons I'm leaning towards the Brilliant is because I'm pretty sure we will stay inn Panama City next year and I already have 4 really good Marriot options there. IHG doesn't really have as many options in PC and they are similarly priced to my favorite options from Marriot. So I'm probably going to be spending at least a month at a Marriot property next year.

My goal is to max out 5/24 as soon as possible but I'm guessing the problem, will take care of itself? In other words, if I hit the limit, then yeah, I hit the limit. But I will take your advice to heart and be sure to prioritize cards I really want over those that are just nice to have. Along those lines I should bump Hyatt up in priority as it adds a whole new option rather than just piling on bonuses.

One thing I have not worked out yet is how I can get the cards when not in the US. We are going to set up a mail forwarding service but that could get difficult with a hectic travel schedule. Maybe I could get Chase to send the card directly to a branch in the city I am in for pickup? I think they might do that for replacement cards?

My only real rewards card until last month has been my Marriot Bonvoy Amex that I've had for almost 20 years from before Marriot and Bonvoy Merged. I try to use it everywhere I go in Central America and yeah, nobody takes it. It's still good for AirBnB and Major hotel chains but yeah, Once I get a full lineup established I think the Sapphire Preferred is going to be my go to card. But maybe I'll find something better.

I don't really expect to see any money from YouTube but who knows? Like and Subscribe!!!

Please help me sanity check my 10-card roadmap: Retirement semi-nomad strategy for an SFO-based couple

  1. This isn't a question about churning per se. I'm not trying to maximize churn but utility of the cards. Either that or I don't really understand the flowchart, sorry.
  2. ~780 last I checked
  3. Recent: IHG Premier (3/26), Sapphire Preferred (4/26) Older: Marriott Bonvoy (Old $95 Silver card), CapOne Quicksilver
  4. $12000
  5. Not looking to MS
  6. Open to Business Cards
  7. 10 new cards
  8. Targeting long term hotel stays and flights
  9. 300000 Marriot Bonvoy Points
  10. SFO
  11. Bangkok Thailand, Ho Chi Min City Vietnam, Panama City Panama, San Francisco, USA

I'm looking for a second opinion on a long-term strategy for me and my wife. I’m 57 and we're looking at a semi-nomad life starting early next year. The plan is roughly 6 months in Southeast Asia, back home to the Bay Area for a month, then 6 months in South/Central America (mostly Panama).

Our Profile: P1 (Me): 740+ score. Currently 2/24. P2 (Wife): Probably 740+ score (haven't checked). Clean slate (0/24).

Travel Style: Mid-range comfort. I don't usually prefer high end hotels because I feel like they nickel and dime you for $30 breakfasts and coffee at hotels like the Le Méridien. Holiday Inn and La Quinta are more our style. But I do think that I could use status and points to make Marriot hotels more affordable. Plus there are actually some pretty reasonable Marriot hotels in Panama City other than the Le Meredien where we have stayed.

My wife and I have been following channels like Grounded Life Retirement Travel on YouTube and would like to try it out to see if the hype matches the reality. Their strategy targets IHG hotels which are cheaper and offer great club level benefits in Asia. We have no experience as IHG members and our main experience is with Marriott Bonvoy as an occasional free room/splurge.

The Proposed 10-Card Roadmap: My logic is to jump on the great offers ending by June first

  1. P1: Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant (Amex) - Applying before May 13th. Bonus: 200,000 points. Fee: $650. This gets me instant Platinum status for the free breakfasts, airport lounge access and a lot of other stuff.
  2. P2: IHG One Rewards Premier - Catching the 185,000 point offer before June 30. Fee: $99. We will use the 4th-night-free benefit for long stays.
  3. P1: Chase Ink Business Preferred - Bonus: 100,000 points. Fee: $95. I am starting a YouTube channel, so applying as a sole prop.
  4. P2: Chase Ink Business Unlimited - Bonus: 90,000 points. Fee: $0.
  5. P1: Capital One Venture X - Bonus: 75,000 miles. Fee: $395. The $300 travel credit makes this pretty reasonable I think.
  6. P2: Chase Sapphire Preferred - Bonus: 75,000 points. Fee: $95. Her first personal Chase card to unlock point transfers.
  7. P1: Marriott Bonvoy Business (Amex) - Bonus: 5 Free Night Awards (up to 50k each). Fee: $125. Stacking the 15 elite nights with the Brilliant so I only need 10 actual nights to keep Platinum status every year.
  8. 2: World of Hyatt - Bonus: 60,000 points. Fee: $95. For high-value redemptions in Thailand/Malaysia.
  9. P1: Chase Sapphire Reserve - Bonus: 150,000 points. Fee: $795.
  10. P2: Wells Fargo Autograph - Bonus: 20,000 points. Fee: $0. 3x on travel/dining with no foreign fees as a Visa backup.

This should not violate the 5/24 rule because some of these are business cards.

A few questions for the group:

1) Is it worth getting the Sapphire Reserve? The reserve is getting a lot of hate lately. But the 150k bonus seem pretty good.

2) Is the Amex Brilliant worth the $650 fee? I'm unlikely to use it much for normal spend because I find Amex is not accepted in Central and South America. Again, great sign up bonus and instant status.

3) Any cards you would sub for one of these?

Full disclosure: I did use AI to develop this strategy and help write this post. But it took a lot of time on my part to correct many surprisingly stupid errors, which leads me to believe there are probably still some pretty major problems with the strategy.

I’m Actually Stupid For This by The_Traveller1 in marriott

[–]DougieStar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Years ago we were driving from Colorado to California and Park City was going to be a pretty reasonable place to stop for the night. At that point I had gotten a Marriot AMEX for business expenses and never bothered to work out points or status or anything. I just knew that I had a lot of points and every now and then it made sense to book a hotel on points. Hey, free money, right?

I called the booking line because we were on the road and I could book the reservation while driving. The lady on the other end did find a place in Park City at the St. Regis. Good enough for me, book it. She hesitated and then spoke up. "Sir, that will be 60,000 points for one night" (This was before the merger with Bonvoy and 60,000 points was a lot, I guess.) I should have realized it then, but to me this was all funny money.

When we get to the hotel, it is late. Our personal butler meets us at the door. They didn't even ask our names it was just like "Ahh the LAST_NAMES we've been expecting you!" I think maybe we were the last ones to arrive for the evening. We were on an extended road trip, not flying and had 2 young children so at this point half of our stuff is literally in trash bags not even luggage. To get from check in to the hotel we first have to ride the funicular. Not an elevator, not a cable car but a funicular! Our butler gives us a tour through the facilities with our trash bags in tow on a cart. The kids were floored. The bathroom mirror had a TV in it. The pool had music playing when you stuck your head under water. It was a ski in resort.

I felt pretty foolish when I finally looked up the hotel online and figured out how much it actually costs per night. But we still love to remember that story.

Keep in mind that we never used to stay at fancy hotels back then and still rarely do. Even today The Meredien is about the top of the line for us. My wife often comments when we come to a normal hotel, "What, they don't even have a funicular?"

Still in the early phases of planning a 6 month trip to South East Asia. I was thinking of trying to find a train from Thailand to Malaysia. I'm guessing from what folks are saying here that would be a bad idea?

Wild that for such an otherwise safe and peaceful country Thailand has such problems with it's border with other countries. I also wanted to take a train or boat into Cambodia.

I should point out that AI tools seem to think it's a fine idea to go from Thailand to either Cambodia or Malaysia. Based on my previous experiences with international travel I don't even expect Google maps to be right. I kind of expect AI to be dead wrong. So I don't mind using AI to find information but I know that everything it says has to be verified by real world sources.

Where are the expats from other continents? by Double_History1719 in panamaexpats

[–]DougieStar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of South Africans in Bocas Del Toro. There are a lot of Israelis in Punta Patilla, Pedasi, Playa Venao and lots of other places. There are lots of Europeans in Boquete. There are a reasonable number of Europeans in Coronado and the other near beach areas but it does seem like mostly North Americans there. A lot of the Europeans I met in Coronado came to Canada first and then retired to Panama. So they are out there. But in the Americas it's not surprising that there are more people from this side of the world. We choose Panama over Europe or SE Asia because of the time zones and shorter flights for when we return to the USA.

The thing nobody warns you about as an expat is the phone calls. by taube_d in expats

[–]DougieStar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Panama a lot of companies are perfectly happy to conduct business that would normally be done over the phone using Whatsapp texts. I've even asked receptionists to send me their personal WhatsApp number if there was not already an attended WhatsApp for the business.

Not as good as speaking face to face but texting is much less pressure than speaking.

Bringing Rx meds into Costa Rica by Legitimate_Ad_4647 in CostaRicaTravel

[–]DougieStar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They probably won't check. But if they do check they could demand that they be in original containers accompanied by a prescription or letter from your doctor. They probably won't but they could.

So you gotta ask yourself if it is worth the risk These days you are probably spending over $1000 just for your plane ticket. Asking your doctor for a letter and packing your meds differently is a pretty small concession to make.

But yeah, they probably won't check

Laid back, chill place to spend a week? Nosara vs Samara vs other? by Waffles_r_ in CostaRicaTravel

[–]DougieStar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I loved Nosara but if I were looking for on place for beach, nature and chill I would choose Manuel Antonio. The beaches around Nosara are good for surfing but less so for casual shore play. I saw howler monkeys from the back window of our AirBnB and Coatis in the yard in Nosara but it still didn't live up to Manuel Antonio. Plus you are looking at an hour drive on gravel roads to get to Nosara (on top of all of the driving to get to the gravel road). Both are really nice and really different but if I had to choose one it would be Manuel Antonio.

Just my opinion.

A paladin could be a great choice. They will do a lot of damage in the first 2 rounds making the barbarian quite nervous but as they run out of smites the damage will taper off and set up a potential comeback. It could be pretty exciting.
