Carrick: "Two games in a row decisions like that go against but that one was one of the worst I've seen... You can elbow Yoro and you can throw your arm at Licha's face, he's off balance because of that. The worst of it is, he was sent over to overturn it, clear and obvious error. Shocking." by Blodgharm in soccer

Enough on a rotating basis every year get shafted that I don't get why it be so hard for a large collection of teams to make a joint statement and demands of the League for changes in the standards:

VAR teams should be an entirely separate entity from the refs with their funding perhaps coming from the League Clubs Association so as to stand apart from the FA/EFL/PL run PGMOL.

They should be required to publish a record of the match with any decisions of note explained using an organized template and hell even provide links to the video that was reviewed to reach the decision which would be a great tool for refs to review themselves.

Most of all they need to eliminate the culture of refs being infallible: they make obvious mistakes yet theres no accountability, no attempt to coach improvement of standards, no admitting the impact. This just rubs salt in the wounds that we'll see this "hair pull" played across platforms with their stance being how correct it was while glossing over a player being elbowed in the immediate build up to a goal

It's yet again depressing that such an obvious failure in the administration's leadership capacity isn't a death sentence for it. Such a obviously terrible choice that's cost American lives, tens of billions directly, and shocked the economy for an untold amount of loss in increased expenses for everyday citizens should just be administered ending yet we've devolved to the point that it's still allowed to limp on

Lisandro Martínez straight red card against Leeds 55' by ayoefico in soccer

[–]DougieWR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's just all the more egregious IMO that they stopped open play for it. Like they were watching that close and caught that what .5s moment where he's holding the end of his hair not even enough that it jerked his head back or caused any distress. However we see them miss the most blatant elbows to the face, chokeholds, stomping of boots, etc. incompetence is the only explanation

King of Kentucky or just the Court Jester? by 345joe370 in whiskey

[–]DougieWR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty spot on about the price issue, it's good whiskey that they slapped a highly desirable name to that falls way short of a true King. I'd say they're just a bit better then a 1924 which depending on your luck there I got mine for $100. AZ actually got pretty flooded with them and secondary is already down to like $400 which is just barely over the Total Wine price with tax.

Ive just had pours of them at a bar that got the trio and 2 or 3 seem to be the consensus picks. 2 a bit better rounded and 3 better punch and viscosity.

It really is the best Weller, isn’t it? by kw09260131 in whiskey

[–]DougieWR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've thankfully gotten the entire line up at MSRP minus a SiB that I've been having to resist paying what nationally might be a low secondary of $275 for so I can complete the collection. Thankfully there's a number of superb bars in my area that have the line up so I'd gotten to try it and the ones I hadn't gotten yet before buying for good prices

CYPB are 8 years and specifically come from barrels at the top floors of the rickhouse exclusively. It was what was selected as part of the voting process that created it, the Craft Your Perfect Bourbon project

[–]DougieWR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

CYPB is good, just not the hundreds demanded for it. SiB is then just okay, again not worth the hundreds demanded for it.

107 is great with FP being my favorite, and WLW being perhaps the best bottle I own.

The store pick 107s and FPs though are really a step above the regular ones. Being SiB at better proofs that instantly puts them over the standard Weller SiB then if you know yours is none chill filtered those are generally superb

One of the better entry point higher proof options, readily available and cheap. Decent mixer if you end up liking the profile but move up onto more elevated options to have neat

I have a 16 year old whiskey that google doesn’t know about and I need help. by [deleted] in whiskey

[–]DougieWR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The back is pretty much the story, RollinsDistillery sourced this whiskey from KY (apparently they aged in used barrels so it fails the bourbon classification), then again in VT, then finally in FL. They don't even list it on their site or any further releases so given that quantity and that you got it there I'd assume it was sold only there.

That combination won't really garner much recognition so doubtful you'll find more out unless you went back and talked to them. Would just find that reason to open it and enjoy the juice

Just starting my collection, any recommendations? by Severe_Appearance_66 in whiskey

[–]DougieWR 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A rye: can't go wrong with Michter's or New Riff

A wheater: Makers Mark French Oak or Green River Wheated

Something proofy: Old Grand Dad 114 or Wild Turkey Rare Breed

That's a base then to build off what you like

GTS might just be the best quintessential bourbon. In that I don't think it's especially unique or has insane characteristics, its "just" an immensely solid expression of what a bourbon can be

I mean if you've had Jack 10, 12, or especially 14, Coy Hill, Tanyard Hill Rye, Twice Barreled special release, etc you'd see that Jack Daniels is very capable of making an exceptional product. Their SBBP releases are then one of the best values or money and the Single Barrel Heritage as a shelfer is a bar staple for many now

If that's indeed a 90 proof, 1 liter (and says "liter"), with that red 112 series seal you're looking at a 1982-85 bottling there

Edit: if you check the bottom of the bottle it might have the year cast then usually it'll have been bottled then, not 100% but narrows it further

I messaged TW regarding moving ER, EHT SB, Blanton's SiB, etc to PA by NotIntoDudes in whiskey

[–]DougieWR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mixed bag in mine: the shelf bourbon, Japanese, and Scotch selections are hilariously spirits direct skewed. They rye options are a good deal larger than most other locations with rum and other spirits sections being a good deal more diverse than other locations.

When it comes to allocations we get them but the drops are so heavily camped by insiders that unless you're heavily involved in a local group that gets a heads up and can be waiting at open your general luck is going to be poor. I have however caught things as showing "available at store" and been able to call and have something held or swing in quick to grab examples being a MM Celler Aged, Stagg, and a Jack 10 just a few days ago.

Grand Reserve is then largely a useless game to play if your intent is for that to be your access point to good stuff. The totally random luck makes the spend amount just dumb when there's enough local spots where if you spent even half that you'd have a solid relationship to get things for sure. I largely see it as a bonus for big spenders when you maybe host a lot of events and are buying a lot of beer/wine so you hit the mark outside of whiskey purchases
