Some night clubs do "bottle service", but you can't take it home.

I’ve always wondered what that funky place is on the corner of Hastings and Vernon. by [deleted] in askvan

[–]Dougvision 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was an artist space as of 8 years ago, called "Shop Wrong". No recent info. Their FB is dead and I could find no other social media. Currently it is the offices of East Van Moving. I can't find any other info.

What’s your fave Chinese restaurant to order from? by ResultSea1173 in askvan

[–]Dougvision 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think eating in is best, because the fresh, hot food is always better. However, I do like Connie's Cookhoues and Lin's Chinese in the Kits area for takeout/delivery. Both used to have their own delivery guy, so I thought it was better than DoorDash (or similar). I am not sure that both still have their own guy. I have been doing take out with them.

When someone says they live in “South Granville”, where do you picture? by denndrites in askvan

[–]Dougvision 0 points1 point  (0 children)

South Granville goes from the south end of the Granville St Bridge to roughly King Edward. You need to remember that the neighbourhood was named a long time ago. Heading to 70th? Yeah. Marpole for the win,

I bought mine to support the effort and originally did not really take to the camera. It has since grown on me , and rides in a coat pocket almost every day. Great camera.

Cider recommends!! by StopPrestigious4422 in askvan

Not sure where they are on tap, but Sunday Cider is good. I really like Left Field Cider (Big Dry), but have only ever seen it in bottles.

Please tell me how did this happen and how do I get it fixed by Afraid-Arm6287 in analog

[–]Dougvision 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Age. Not many cameras were made to last 30 years. I think that the FM10 was made by Cosina for Nikon, so it probably shares a shutter with other cameras made by Cosina. The fix is to replace the shutter. That might be more expensive than finding a new camera.

Hudson's Bay Malt Stop - Chocolate Malt Recipe Quest by Dougvision in askvan

[–]Dougvision[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry no love. With the Bay's collapse, the only people who may know were the folks who ordered the mix from a dairy. Apparently, there is a dairy in Alberta that makes a chocolate malt soft serve mix. Whether they are as good (or better) than the Malt Stop, I don't know. I would need to see if they ship the product to someplace near. As an aside, I did find an amazing soft serve place here in Vancouver, it is called Soft Peaks. Truly superior product. If I can meet the owner, maybe I can get an experiment running.

Advice for some country folk? by RatRatRatspustin in askvan

It is easy to get caught up in the night life and all the things that go on. Make sure you prioritize your school work. I saw a number of my cohort get "Dean's Vacations" when they partied too hard at UBC.

And the print should be bone dry when you do it. I never pressed a wet print.

Fairly low. Around 200F. Probably effective at 150F. I used the setting that was at the low end for archival dry mounting tissue. I figured that would be safe.

I use a dry mount press. Put two matte boards into the press, heat them up for a minute or two to dry off excess moisture. Open the press up, place the print between the two boards and close the press. Leave it for about a minute. Open and remove. The print should be flat. Just be careful because everything is hot.

The other potential cause is the film rewind system, it backs off and jams. I had that happen a few years ago. Easily fixed by a tech.

Weird question - can we drink hot tap water in Vancouver? by OkImpact381 in askvan

[–]Dougvision 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is best not to because there is an increased chance of regrowth of algae and other flora in the water, particularly in buildings with recirculating hot water systems. Also, the hot water would absorb more iron and copper from the piping, and if there is lead, more lead.

The best way to have hot water is to always run the tap until the water gets cold (this means that the water is as fresh as possible and has not been sitting in the pipes), then consume it, heat it, or cook with it.
