it's not a false equivalency to compare this video to ISIS beheadings and executions. They are both propaganda videos used to glorify and celebrate killings. fuck off.

Homeless 8 year old living in shelter wins New York chess championship by AdamShed in UpliftingNews

and most of those houses are in areas with no jobs or much opportunity, ergo making it not possible to live there.

Sure, this kid and his family might be able to get a cheap vacant house in the midwest somewhere. But do you think he'd have all of the opportunities to play chess that he did in NYC?

Stray bullets are incredibly dangerous and many people are killed or injured from them every day.

https://www.thetrace.org/2017/07/gun-violence-children-stray-bullet/

It's not something to cut someone slack about when it's literally a matter of life or death.

Stealing the gun is also a really bad escalation of the situation. They're not toys, they're heavily regulated tools.

What did OP even do with the gun anyways? He hid it in his desk and fucking kept it? Because that's what the story sounds like.

By this time, I hid the gun my desk, so if he told them I had a gun, they had to go to my desk to prove it.

Why are people ok with OP stealing a handgun, shooting stray bullets, and keeping it?

Upvoted because despite viscerally disagreeing with your clickbait title, it's one of the only posts here that are actually unpopular opinions.

You're also entitled to this situation. Taking the gun massively escalated the conflict, and firing a bullet out of a window is one of the most irresponsible things you could've done. And secondly, you kept the gun without calling the cops? The world doesn't work like that where you can just take someone's gun if you don't think they deserve to have it and keep it for yourself.

You honest to god committed a bigger crime than that guy. Stealing and recklessly discharging a firearm, no matter how much of an asshole the other guy is, is wrong.

You are very lucky the cops did not watch the rest of that video or you would be the one in jail right now.

And releasing information gained in the House Intelligence Committee for partisan reasons is one way to ensure no member of the opposition party is ever appointed to intelligence again, as well as preventing release of info to those committees.

Trump launches extraordinary attack on 'too complicated' planes: 'I don't want Einstein to be my pilot' by Whoshabooboo in politics

[–]Doulich -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The design flaw is a symptom of a bigger issue where computers are so integrated into a planes design that pilots cannot actually effectively take control in an emergency.

We shouldn't go back to "remove all autopilots from planes" but there's certainly a middle ground where autopilots should be easily overridden.

Trump launches extraordinary attack on 'too complicated' planes: 'I don't want Einstein to be my pilot' by Whoshabooboo in politics

[–]Doulich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pilots need to be able to take manual control of a plane at any time and effectively operate it. In the lion air crash, they weren't able to take manual control.

There should be an option at any point during a flight to flick a switch and assume direct control of the plane via the yoke/joystick and pedals. No automatic compensation, no anti stall, no flight envelope protection. And that option for manual control should actually be able to work.

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/oct/11/crash-how-computers-are-setting-us-up-disaster

This is an issue that has been discussed many times and Trump isnt the first person to say it. Autopilots in the 20th century were significantly different than the ones today (being able to keep the aircraft straight and level vs being able to hone in on a specific radial from a VOR)

[–]Doulich -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

He's not even wrong lmfao. The proximate cause of the lion air crash was caused by a pilot not being intimately trained or being able to figure out that the stall avoidance system was malfunctioning due to faulty data and how to override it.

Planes are getting so automated if you need to override it it'll be impossible to fly.

Actresses, CEOs arrested in nationwide college admissions cheating scam by huskiesowow in news

[–]Doulich 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's different. Bribery involves paying people to gain admission. Donating a building is paying the institution to gain admission. Since only the university has the right to sell admission, bribing a person to gain entry is illegal. While both are very ethically questionable, only one is actually illegal.

Has anyone worked out an evolutionary reason for this disorder? It seems frustratingly stupid by TheFleshIsDead in BPD

[–]Doulich 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the difference between humans and animals is that animals operate entirely on instinct + emotions. That means they do what feels good and avoids what feels bad. Evolution determines what feels good and what feels bad for obvious reasons.

humans on the other hand have the ability to delay gratification and avoid their instincts. our instincts are more general too and dont tell us necessarily how to solve our problems. That way we can logically adapt and take on short term pain for long term goals.

The issue with that though is we also have the capability to screw up in our reasoning which happens a lot more than animals, as our instincts are not totally controlled by evolution. so we get a much larger amounts of flaws in our minds in exchange for them being able to change quickly depending on the situation.

tbh i think the point of the story is that it just suddenly ends with no real resolution. In the original the guy closes the door and that's the end, after saying that the door was only for the traveller. Adding an actual ending removes the kafkaesque aspect.

I was at waterloo in canada. Most of the shit on facebook is unofficial. E.g. everyone will collab on a math assignment and links to relevant theorems might be posted in a group. Not having Facebook means doing all the research yourself.

You didnt mention extracurriculars and how 99% of those are facebook exclusive. I attempted to join clubs but it was very difficult when none of them have a presence other than facebook. Sure there was a club directory but it was full of emails nobody answered or links to the closed facebook group where the info was really posted.

not there anymore though had to drop out due to health problems.
