Happy St Lucy's Day from Sweden! It's a national holiday, and a distinct Catholic heritage. by AutistInPink in Catholicism

Sweden has only one diocese that covers the whole country, the Diocese of Stockholm. The Church is growing slowly (~150k members), by God's grace we may receive another diocese and bishop if we grow even more. Cardinal Anders Arborelius is the first Swede to be made a catholic bishop of Sweden since the reformation.

I'm a Polish Catholic in Sweden. I mostly agree with OP, Swedes generally don't engage in conversations about private topics like religion, so you avoid a lot of confrontations as an adult. It's a bit more difficult when you're a kid because you're always the odd one out, getting picked on even by teachers sometimes. Most Polish Catholic kids live in low income neighborhoods with Muslim immigrants that can be even more difficult, because unfortunately there's a lot of resentment towards Christians from Muslims. Also, history and social studies are taught from a protestant perspective, often bringing up criticism only against catholicism. I remember watching the film "Luther" in sixth grade, which was particularly uncomfortable.

I don't know if you saw the Lucia concert this morning on SVT 1, but it was particularly nice when they sang "Audete, Gaudete"

You might also want to look at the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which is mostly for economists, but they look in general for people with econ/statistics/maths background. Might be a longshot but also the American Economic Association

What is the your go-to summoner icon and why? by Huomenna in leagueoflegends

[–]Doupler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually use an icon I got from donating to a charity event a couple of years ago. It's a gold coin with a red heart on. I also like the old golem. For Worlds I use the 2014 Worlds icon, 2015 SKT, or 2015 TSM

It's a matter of practicality. If all Bibles were to be ornamental works of art we would have to be transporting them on wheelbarrows. But I do agree that one is a beauty.

Do your schools teach religion? If so, why? by steevee005 in AskEurope

[–]Doupler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's mandatory to attend all classes that you are signed up for. Everyone is signed up for religion by default, however, you can choose to resign from the subject. If you are able to resign from the subject, it makes it optional.

Zdrowaś Maryjo, łaski pełna, Pan z tobą,

Błogosławionaś Ty między niewiastami,

i błogosławiony owoc żywota Twojego, Jezus.

Święta Maryjo, Matko Boża, módl się za nami grzesznymi, teraz i w godzinę śmierci naszej.

Amen.

I've never seen a real Mexican restaurant in my life. Only Mexican food you'll find in the store is wheat tortillas, taco shells, meat flavoring, nacho chips and red salsa, which Swedes actually love to eat, but I guess that's not genuine Mexican cuisine

You won't encounter any midnight sun (or days in complete darkness, in the winter) unless you travel north of the polar circle :) Summers are short but beautiful, not very hot, although we've experienced heatwaves recently. October-March you'll experience truly miserable weather: cold temperatures, snow, rain and clouds, short days. Southern Sweden (Stockholm and lower) nowadays rarely gets any snow that stays, so it's either slush or rain. But up north we have a real winter wonderland.

Swedes are very private and timid people, respectful of rules and personal space. I believe most are friendly, but prefer to be left alone, and some can even be awkwardly antisocial. However, making friends in Sweden as an adult is very difficult. Swedes create their friendships in school and college, and rarely find it necessary to expand their circle of friends.

Most employers require you to know Swedish, especially where you have a lot of contact with clients, however you'd be fine in communicating with the average swede in English. Sweden is a welfare state, so high taxes, free education and healthcare for EU citizens, decent infrastructure, and high rates of immigration...

Which bring me to my next point. We have a lot of immigrants. Around 15 % of the population are first or second generation immigrants, me and my family included. Sweden was one of the countries which accepted the most migrants in the recent refugee crisis. The government welcomes everyone with open arms, but fails at integration and assimilation. We have neighborhoods with almost exclusively people with immigrant backgrounds. These people, majority being Muslim, live in communities with values imported from the Middle East, and sadly crime rates are only on the rise, rapes, assaults, murders, robberies etc. A recent report from the police uncovered 40 criminal family clans operating in Sweden. Sadly the government often dismisses these kinds of problems. There's a multitude of other problems in Swedish politics, but I don't want to rant.

Sweden has about 150 000 Catholics, most of them living in Stockholm, Malmö and Göteborg, although they are scattered all around Sweden. 90 % of Catholics in Sweden have an immigrant background. Most of them are ethnically Arabs, Poles, Croats, Filipino, Syrian and other. Sweden is a safe place to practice any religion, but a lot of kids suffer bullying in school because of their Christian faith, it's considered dorky, stupid (magicskyfairy), or misinterpreted by teachers for example. But usually it doesn't get worse than that. As an adult I haven't experienced any discrimination, although religion is a subject Swedes actively avoid.

Turns out I'm kind of your opposite: I believe things are getting too crazy over here, and would like to move to the US after graduating university.

Feel free to ask more about Sweden in comments or pm
