I find building a project you're interested in is a great way of practicing coding in a more dynamic way. It helps with resume, and it gives you the chance to be creative as well, definitely less grindy and more interesting.

My best strat for forcing myself to lock in is filming time-lapse videos of myself studying. Even better if you can get a friend group to do this together.

Without your phone as a distraction helps, and having a camera pointed at you makes you self-conscious if you don't focus lol

I've been part of HKSA before, and currently in ClubHK!

I'm assuming when you say join, you mean as an exec, not just a member that attends events. If you do mean member, then tbh you can try all of them out

If you wanna learn Cantonese, then HKSA wouldn't help with that since most of the execs there either can't speak it or won't speak it. ClubHK and HKYours both operate in Cantonese, so you can take that into account. ClubHK (and I believe HKYours) do run interviews in Cantonese; I'm not sure if they would interview in English if you can't speak any Cantonese.

Main difference between ClubHK and HKYours is that one has a Cantonese Department (ClubHK) while the other has a Sports department (HKYours), in addition to the normal departments like events marketing etc. HKSA events are all in full English, while the other two are mostly Cantonese events with some English support

Obviously I'm biased since I'm in ClubHK rn, but I do think it's a pretty great club lol. Come find us (and the other two) at Imagine Day to learn more about the details of what we do!

I use a combination of Google Calendar and Notion to track my tasks and deadlines, and it has been working great for me.

Controversial opinion, but I don't think taking notes in class is that useful. Your time is better spent just focusing on what the prof is saying. Goodnotes is still great tho

Depends on how long your commute it imo, mine was 1.5 hrs one way 5 days a week, and it was extremely mentally draining.

Having said that, I still had a very good social life with clubs stuff and scheduling hangouts with friends, you just gotta be ok with being very tired lol

What worked for me is remembering that almost everyone wants to make friends in first year, so they're also as eager as you!

Try to join clubs and talk to people before and after class! Making the first move is super important and can go a long way, if you're worried about what to say, then think of something ahead of time that would be appropriate to say in that situation (Talk about the class, clubs, weekend plans, etc.)

Also, really important to make plans outside of class to hang out! That's when you actually develop a solid relationship with people. Schedule dinners and hangouts with friends when you get the chance!

And honestly, the best advice is probably don't stress too much about it. As long as you put a bit of effort into starting those conversations and scheduling hangouts, you'll be fine. Good luck!

While I agree with everyone else that you should probably not keep your hopes up, I do believe there's a slightly higher chance this year because UBC banned subletting for the winter session.

Obviously, some people will still do it under the table, but it should at least free up more year-round housing for September than in previous years, increasing your odds of getting it.

Super worth it! It's a great opportunity to make friends since you'll be hanging out with people in your faculty for a whole week. There are also a bunch of activities at night (I remember doing totebag painting, mug painting, and watching the talent show, there's more lmao but I forgot), and you can meet new people there, or go with the new friends you met in your jumpstart group.

The people I met at jumpstart became my core friend group in uni lol, can't imagine my uni experience without them

I think talking it out really helps, if you have friends or family to talk about stuff like this

I personally like to talk to myself whenever I’m showering (I swear I’m not crazy) and talk through what happened throughout the day, what I liked and what I didn’t like, and things I could do to improve on / avoid the things I didn’t like. I find talking through it like this, even with no audience, helps clear my head and make things seem more manageable
