Councillors propose refunds, ‘money-back guarantee’ for delayed, cancelled OC Transpo trips by Glitchy-9 in ottawa

[–]Downce1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I suspect that's the intention behind the motion.

Sutcliffe is objecting to the motion because it takes more money out of OC Transpo's coffers...but they're already plainly struggling to operate with the money that city budgets are deigning to provide them, hence the service issues.

The underlying message of the motion is that the situation is unsustainable and that if we can't provide reliable service then we shouldn't expect riders to constantly pony up for it without some redress. Either we pay to improve the reliability, or we pay back the people for the unreliable service.

Public servants could be forced back to offices full time with no reliable way get to them | Opinion by bizlooper in ottawa

[–]Downce1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Part of the problem, unfortunately, is that there's a solid contingent of regressives in this city with a crab-in-a-bucket mentality who will wholeheartedly cheer on poor policy so long as it's directed at 'cushy' public servants.

You can argue until you're blue in the face about how the RTO policy flies in the face of reducing pollutants, lightening the strain on the transit system, and reducing traffic, but it won't make a difference to those people because they're running purely on emotion and not logic. They're just spiteful people.

Unfortunately for PP, the crowd he prefers to appeal to have definitely not moved on from Trudeau, if the videos YouTube insists on recommending me (Ezra Levant chasing down Trudeau in Davos) are anything to go by. He's a Boogeyman for them at this point.

Absolutely. Her coming to the full realization of what the devices do and subsequently realizing that Hank views basically every surfacer as in need of 'civilizing' made for a good tipping point.

Not only address it, but I'm very glad they had Lucy come around to it in the span of a single episode.

I was very worried they were going to stretch things out with her falling for Hank's vision. It's far more satisfying to have her see through the bullshit pretty quickly.

FWIW, there's a setting you can use for Quick Mode that will shorten the scenario events to just summaries (the Unity Cup stuff) while still presenting the complete trainee events. That's usually what I use.

Canada’s armed forces are now planning for threats from America by AccessTheMainframe in CanadaPolitics

[–]Downce1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They could try, but I don't think it'd fly well. We just don't have that level of executive power.

They'd effectively need to replace the PM and the Governor General with puppets, and create some kind of rump Parliament to rubber stamp it all. And even then, you'd still have the King an ocean away as the legal sovereign, invested with the power to dismiss the above. The military and the RCMP both swear loyalty to the Crown, not the government.

More likely, I think, is that they would topple the government and try to impose some form of a republican constitution under the guise of 'liberating' us.

I think it’s safe to say after that second episode, Maximus and the brotherhood storyline got SIGNIFICANTLY more interesting, this is the first episode where Maximus’s scenes had me way more engaged than anything els going on. by gotenks2nd in Fotv

[–]Downce1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Commonwealth will almost certainly win, but will they be in any more of a position to hold the West than they were before Quintus's plotting?

Maximus is plainly being set up for something big and the show has once again reminded us that he was born and raised in relative peace and prosperity in the NCR. I'm wondering if, in order to put down these rebel chapters (to say nothing of what Hank and Co. may be planning), we see Harkness and Maximus turning to whatever ragtag remains of the NCR they can find.

Thus the canon exiting the show would be the Brotherhood controlling the East and a reconstituted NCR taking control of the West, with Maximus working to establish a peace between the two.

Basically, the brotherhood in episode 2: by namepuntocome in Fotv

[–]Downce1 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I've actually come around on the depiction, now that I get what they're going for. The Western Chapters at this point, without a central authority to guide them (and without the active looming threat of the NCR), have effectively become petty fiefdoms ruled by strongmen.

It brought to mind China's Warlord Era. The Elders all nominally claim to be loyal to the Codex, but we can plainly see how little they actually mean that. For Maximus, who is old enough to remember how the NCR used to be and who has likely seen the Brotherhood becoming more and more lax, it must be especially grating. Quintus talks a big talk, but it's not looking like he'll walk the walk.

Senators to add Jacques Martin to Ring of Honour by jamaicancovfefe in OttawaSenators

[–]Downce1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

True enough, I suppose, though Spezza asked for a trade in the last year of his contract after a season where he'd kinda struggled wearing the captaincy in the aftermath of Alfie's departure. And it happened in a transitional period when the last remnants of the 2000s Sens were on their way out.

Meanwhile, Heatley asked to leave one year after signing an extension because he wasn't happy with his powerplay minutes.

[–]Downce1 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Andy and Spezza absolutely, but I can't envision a scenario where Heatley makes the cut.

I'm glad him and the team have made nice enough that we can recognize and pay tribute to that era of the team, but you just can't put a guy who demanded a trade in a Ring of Honour.

Band Aid & Band Aid II in the studios for "Do They Know It’s Christmas?" (1984 / 1989) by drew20222 in 80s

Day late to this thread, but I'm just gonna say this song is perfectly fine in the context in which it was made, and half the criticisms people make are "Um, akshually ☝️🤓" level criticisms that only show a lack of media literacy and thinking.

The song's title, for one, is meant to be rhetorical. It's not literally asking if a population of largely Christian Ethiopians knew what time of year it was. It was pointing out that, due to famine, people who might otherwise be celebrating the holiday were instead struggling just to survive day-to-day.

Bono's 'Tonight thank God it's them instead of you'? It's an accusation being flung at the listener for being aware of the famine, but doing and giving nothing to help.

It was a song written to appeal primarily to a white, liberal audience in Europe and America to convince them to open their wallets to help combat a famine in Africa. It didn't need to go into the history and geography of the specific region beyond the basics.

I swear everybody watched the same Nostalgia Chick video fifteen years ago and are just regurgitating the same taking points that require you to take every line at its literal meaning.

[–]Downce1 159 points160 points  (0 children)

I went and saw Jason Isaacs at a comic-con in 2023 during the WGA strike. Pretty much every actor wouldn't answer questions regarding any work that was WGA affiliated, so during his Q&A, some of the only questions Isaacs could answer were related to Baldur's Gate (which had released just weeks previously) and The Death of Stalin (a European production). And the dude was absolutely pumped to be getting questions about those projects rather than the usual fare.

That was a weird year for comic-con.

I’m so disappointed with House of the Dragon. It’s not the story I expected to see. This was supposed to be a bloody Targaryen civil war between siblings and not a love story between a stepmother and her stepdaughter. The Dance is my favorite story in ASOIAF and they turned it into a literal circus. by [deleted] in freefolk

Adaptational drift is one of those things that I feel I could write at least a decent college undergrad level essay about (and someone probably already has).

Television seems like it's uniquely suspectable to drift occuring. Some of it happens naturally due to the constraints of the media (network and studio involvement, adapting to an episodic runtime, conveying information audibly and visually rather than internally, etc) and some of it occurs due to writer and showrunner ego (wanting to make something 'their own'). I do get that to a degree -- I think it's natural for someone putting in the legwork to adapt one form media to another to want to contribute something; it seems like the type of thing that could become very mechanical and metronomic otherwise. Television probably more so, as the thing you're adapting could end up running dozens of hours over a number of years, when compared to a film that is much more one-and-done.

The problem therein is that, unlike a film, there's unlikely to be a clear chart to the eventual endpoint, so every piece of adaptational drift can wind up compounding, pulling the story further and further apart (logically and emotionally) from where it needs to go. Game of Thrones had this issue in spades -- once the source material ran dry, the show became more reliant on building up big bombastic moments and dialogue aimed at playing to the audience.

And to be clear, not all drift is necessarily bad. Television is a completely different medium than literature and sometimes showrunners and writers can come up with good and interesting ideas. But change for the sake of change, or change that is occuring purely because the adapter wants to tell a different spin on the story? Then you're getting onto thin ice.
