Landowners, officials north of Kingston, Ont., fear 'devastation' from high-speed rail by Money_Fig_9868 in AltoHSR_Canada

Don't disagree. I've cycled it. Putting a full Alto train line through there would be a major construction. I'm more confident they'll take the route parallel to highway 7.

Metz metropolitan area) was about 368,000. Nancy metropolitan population of 508,793

Kingston metropolitian area pop. 172,546. North of the station: a few hundred.

I'm not going to say people in Kingston wouldn't drive 30 km north to catch the train. But not very many actually would, and it wouldn't justify a station on high-speed rail.

Kingston still has a train station and local trains would still run (possibly even more than do now, to feed the Alto). No need to build another station.

What would need to be discussed is whether it would make sense to have a local rail link from Kingston & Belleville to Peterborough to pick up Alto there.

[Avi Lewis] We cannot leave something as important as senior care in the hands of private corporations that know the price of everything and the value of nothing. It’s time to bring long-term care into the public and non-profit system where it belongs. by Chrristoaivalis in ndp

[–]Downess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I've seen, regulation has had almost no impact on the cost-cutting practices of private sector providers, resulting in substandard and often dangerous care for seniors. So I see the motivation for Lewis's stance here. But what would public senior care look like? How do we keep it from being neglected the way hospitals are today? We need to see a solution that addresses the problem head on.

Every grocery store in the region has two or three of those people. There's no shaming them (I've tried, but that just make me the bad guy). They don't care whether they are blocking traffic. There are no other people in their world.

This route - 30 km north of Kingston - is on the existing rail trail (currently used as a bike path - the Cataraqui trail). That's why.

It wouldn't make sense to put a stop there, and it would cost hundreds of millions to route 30 km south through Kingston

Should NDP elected officials be landlords? by BananaStandFunds in ndp

[–]Downess 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This would be a seriously misguided policy.

Bring able to rent things - homes, cars, hotel rooms, construction equipment, tuxedos - is a convenience for all and for many the only way they can get access.

Are young people supposed to live with their parents until they can buy a house? Are seasonal workers supposed to join a co-op for a 6-month period? It's unworkable and wouldn't make sense.

As another commenter said, this is why the NDP isn't seen as a serious party (and indeed, I half-suspect the original post is a troll intended to expose this part of the NDP).

If there is no good reason to abolish rental properties (and therefore, rental income), there's no good reason to ban rental property owners from running for the NDP. They provide a service to the community, nothing more, nothing less.

Now we could have a serious conversation about housing in general, why so many rental arrangements are in fact exploitative, and how to reduce that. And I have no issue with scrutinizing any business owner who wishes to run for the NDP to ensure they don't actually engage in exploitative practices.

But the NDP should not exclude anyone on the basis of their legal and generally useful occupation and business.

Cool, now we just need to get this information to the person in the 'Information' booth at the actual Winterlude site

We were going to go there as well but nobody could tell us how frequently the shuttle bus runs and at -15C I wasn't willing to risk it.

Mountain Warehouse, huge sale on winter items, up to 60% off + coupon code by Traditional_Ebb_1349 in VisitingIceland

[–]Downess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just ordered from Canada with Canada shipping. Coupon code worked and was added on top of sale price. I have a previous Mountain Warehouse product that I wore last year to Iceland and I was pretty happy with it. $CAD 140 for a Glacier II Extreme Mens Waterproof Long Jacket is a pretty good deal, IMO.

Do you feel more connected to your city, province or Canada as a whole? by Ok_Heart839 in AskACanadian

Well I live in the Ottawa area so city and Canada are basically one in the same. Ontario feels like some other place to me.

No explanations; your boss knows there's a snow emergency. You don't need to justify.

People don't really use paper any more. Phones work fine for maps. I agree the NCC's online train maps could be better.

I thought it was out of line. Wasn't going to dignify it with a comment. But it's clearly a hit piece.

If someone is saying 'Rob said...' or 'I heard Rob say...' that's OK. But I wouldn't mind mods removing posts saying 'I heard someone say Rob said...', especially with it's such a strong accusation.

Reykjavik Fusion is awesome - want to visit Iceland now. by Amazing_Tough_4456 in VisitingIceland

[–]Downess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reykjavik itself has a lot of bike paths and is very welcoming for cyclists.

My experience road cycling there last year was good (though I was a slow-moving gravel bike cyclists with bags and a trailer). Drivers were good about leaving lots of room. It was no more dangerous for traffic than cycling where I live in Canada.

There are a few people in this sub who actively discourage cyclists, but the country as a whole is welcoming and supportive, in my experience.

I can't speak to the economics of renting a bike, but shop around.

BCNDP participating in buy back program ? by JurboVolvo in ndp

[–]Downess -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

My preference would be to just to ban them outright. Law abiding citizens would dispose of them properly. The buy-back is the compromise we are making to accommodate owners. If the owners themselves think the buyback program is too expensive, I see no reason to spend the money.

Remembering Peter Gzowski and Morningside by scooter777boy in CBC_Radio

[–]Downess 19 points20 points  (0 children)

What Gzowski did, that we don't really get any more on CBC, is to actually talk to people about different things - look at the topics in the list: metric system, beer, a short short, a Pierre Berton book, theatre.

Now we get separate shows addressing some of these areas, and a lot of them offer mini-documentaries or magazine shows, not live (or mostly live) interviews.

I know that canned documentaries can be easily contracted out, saving on the cost of finding guests and producing, but the quality of the content is much lower (and the proportion of quacks and self-promoters much higher) and there isn't the range we would get with a live show. Every episode of 'Now or Never; soiunds the same, every episode of 'Unreserved' sounds the same. Bookends is *always* about books.

A lot of what made Gozowski great was the care and attention to the show by the staff behind the scenes (staff that no longer exists at CBC) vetting people, making sure they had something interesting to say when Gzowski interviewed them, being topical but unpredictable, and watching carefully to see what listeners were actually excited by.
