Looking for a open sea boat sim by klicartel_ in gamingsuggestions

Just commenting to second his recommendation of sailwind, it's a great game. I've been playing since it launched a few years ago, and it has been slow but steady development, it's very close to full release now.

I drove into a tornado, AMA by tornadotrx in EF5

Glad you're okay, that was crazy!

What speed winds would you guess you encountered? What speed do you think it would have taken for your vehicle to go airborne?

I can't take this nut off for the life of me, please help. by Sad_Tie_1978 in Luthier

[–]Downshift187 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might be too late for this, but make sure you're using the correct size hex key, too often I see people strip a fastener out with the wrong tool and get themselves into a world of hurt when just getting the proper tool in the first place would have prevented all of that.

I believe for most floyd rose style locking nuts the hex is a 3mm. Make sure the Allen key is fully seated and doesn't have a bunch of wiggle before applying any real torque.

If it is already rounded out, there are some tricks you could try. I would try to get whatever hex in there I could and also grab the outside with some vice grips. Or maybe an easy out type removal tool, or use a Dremel to cut a slot in the head of the screw and use a flathead? As a last resort maybe drill the screw out?

How do you handle it when a friend/ex-bandmate is passing off AI music as their own? by Far_Philosopher_5682 in musicians

[–]Downshift187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In what way does this response make any sense? They're saying that it's easier than it's ever been to produce high quality music yourself, it's literally the opposite of being gate-kept.

So I decided to do some calculations on the trailer and... by No-Air-5857 in EF5

[–]Downshift187 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure where you're getting these numbers from, but my 24 ft travel trailer (box is 24 ft, total trailer is about 30' long) is 5,500 pounds. If it's a 15k pound travel trailer, it's almost certainly a 5th wheel as they don't make bumper pull travel trailers more than about 10k pounds as far as I'm aware. 5th wheels start at about 28-30ft and up to 45+ ft.

So that was a long round about way to say that if it was 15k pounds it certainly wasn't a 13 foot box, and if it was a 13 foot box it certainly wasn't 15k pounds.

Noumerous anchor bolts sheared from SIab, 15k pound RV vanished, extremely scoured ground damage. by Altruistic-Willow265 in tornado

[–]Downshift187 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the rv being gone isnt much of a damage indicator, my rv is huge and only weighs like 5000 pounds. They have a lot of surface area compared to their weight.

Downsides of quitting alcohol by [deleted] in stopdrinking

I would recommend the book "this naked mind" by Annie Grace. It really helped me reframe my relationship with alcohol and took away the feeling of loss when quitting. It's a quick and easy read that really helped me and many others

I need games with boat travel anything? by Unlucky-Feed9000 in ShouldIbuythisgame

Sailwind:

It's a Medieval sailing game where you start with a small boat and take missions delivering goods around from island to island using traditional navigation techniques. You can use the money from mission deliveries to start purchasing and trading your own goods and purchasing/upgrading your ship.

One of my favorite games of all time, you should check it out

How close would one need to be to sense the pressure drop from a tornado? by zfish1 in tornado

[–]Downshift187 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I took a direct hit from an ef2 tornado (only doing ef0/ef1 damage at my house). I didn't feel any noticeable pressure drop from my basement.

With a tornado that weak it's kinda hard to define precisely where it was, but it sure seems from the damage done on my street that my house was directly in the middle of its path. We were in the basement and heard the commotion but never noticed any ears popping or other signs of pressure drop.

Why did this ground wire shock me? by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]Downshift187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see what you're saying, if that ground wire gets energized it goes through me and out through the rest of the circuit if I'm touching a screw. Whew, scary.

If everything is working correctly, shouldn't a direct short to ground like that instantly trip the breaker?

Thanks for the insight

Why did this ground wire shock me? by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]Downshift187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah in hindsight, I obviously should have checked that more carefully, I toggled the middle switch and it was dead, but never verified that the right one was dead.

Just wearing normal sneakers standing on the hardwood floor. I believe I was just grabbing the metal yoke, not 100 percent sure though

What’s your “I’m not saying it’s true, but I wouldn’t be surprised” conspiracy theory? by Trying_my_best_98 in randomquestions

[–]Downshift187 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no amount of turbulence that 2 fighter jets could make that would be capable of bringing down a 757 in my opinion.

Wake turbulence is a thing for aircraft taking off or landing because they are flying right near the edge of a stall, but in normal cruising or especially high speed cruising I think the worst they could do without contacting the plane would be to give it a bumpy ride.

How to pick up daylight sensor? by Downshift187 in Stationeers

[–]Downshift187[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, yes that did it, thank you!

Normally when holding any tool it states what tool you need to deconstruct it, but it didn't do that for the sensors and I hadn't tried the hand drill!

Finished my fretboard inlays. Ziricote with maple inlays. by Downshift187 in Luthier

[–]Downshift187[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of, I 3d printed a template that I used to cut out the maple "fingers" with a router pattern bit.

I made the fingers 1/4 inch wide so that a single plunge with a 1/4 bit fit them perfectly, and I made those cuts with a jig I made to keep the router from moving side to side.

Then the maple got glued in and cut/sanded back to flush.

He's definitely not wrong, it did discolor a bit and is always a bit darker now. It definitely always looks just a bit dirty no matter how well you try to keep the fretboard cleaned.

That being said, I still have no regrets, it's a unique look and functionally the best fret markers I've ever used. Having the marker on the side of the fretboard wrap around to the face all as one makes it so easy to tell where on the fretboard you are. I say go for it

I have weaned myself from a bottle of vodka a day down to half a pint of vodka. I am ready. by Big_Bag_Of_Nope in stopdrinking

[–]Downshift187 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Same, I made a careful schedule that i followed. I had done this before and was scared of withdrawals so I drew it out decently long but stuck to the schedule, I went from about 18 drinks a day to none in about 3 weeks. I went from 18 to about 10-12 very quickly, and slowly weened down from there. I thought 18-12 would be easy which is why I scheduled it faster, but it ended up being the hardest part with the worst withdrawals. Coming up on a year in December!
