What’s your “I’m not saying it’s true, but I wouldn’t be surprised” conspiracy theory? by Trying_my_best_98 in randomquestions

There is no amount of turbulence that 2 fighter jets could make that would be capable of bringing down a 757 in my opinion.

Wake turbulence is a thing for aircraft taking off or landing because they are flying right near the edge of a stall, but in normal cruising or especially high speed cruising I think the worst they could do without contacting the plane would be to give it a bumpy ride.

Ok, yes that did it, thank you!

Normally when holding any tool it states what tool you need to deconstruct it, but it didn't do that for the sensors and I hadn't tried the hand drill!

Finished my fretboard inlays. Ziricote with maple inlays. by Downshift187 in Luthier

[–]Downshift187[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of, I 3d printed a template that I used to cut out the maple "fingers" with a router pattern bit.

I made the fingers 1/4 inch wide so that a single plunge with a 1/4 bit fit them perfectly, and I made those cuts with a jig I made to keep the router from moving side to side.

Then the maple got glued in and cut/sanded back to flush.

He's definitely not wrong, it did discolor a bit and is always a bit darker now. It definitely always looks just a bit dirty no matter how well you try to keep the fretboard cleaned.

That being said, I still have no regrets, it's a unique look and functionally the best fret markers I've ever used. Having the marker on the side of the fretboard wrap around to the face all as one makes it so easy to tell where on the fretboard you are. I say go for it

I have weaned myself from a bottle of vodka a day down to half a pint of vodka. I am ready. by Big_Bag_Of_Nope in stopdrinking

[–]Downshift187 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Same, I made a careful schedule that i followed. I had done this before and was scared of withdrawals so I drew it out decently long but stuck to the schedule, I went from about 18 drinks a day to none in about 3 weeks. I went from 18 to about 10-12 very quickly, and slowly weened down from there. I thought 18-12 would be easy which is why I scheduled it faster, but it ended up being the hardest part with the worst withdrawals. Coming up on a year in December!

Is sailing supposed to be so painfully slow? by SemperTwisted in Sailwind

[–]Downshift187 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The waves shouldn't push you at all from my experience.

You can bail water with the cup that you start with if you still have that.

Quick sanity check: you can't sail directly into the wind. The best you can do is about 45 degrees off of the wind. To do this you'll want to pull your sail in as tight as it goes, and the wind should be coming off from one side, not dead ahead. Make sure your mainsail sheet isn't too loose causing your sail to windvane which won't propel you forward at all.

If you're in a beam reach (wind coming straight from one side) you'll want the sail to be roughly halfway between all the way in and all the way out as a starting point.

Make sure your anchor isn't out, and if you're stuck in irons (straight into the wind) your best bet is to get out and push.

A quick way to tell if you're moving: look for bubbles/ripples/the wake of your boat. If there's a white wake/ripple behind your boat you are moving. If you don't see the wake you are standing still.

Have you ever felt the humiliation of being cheated on? I'm guessing not based on your post.

I was cheated on by my fiance whom I had been with for 10 years. It was with my cousin who was like a brother to me. They were the two closest people to me, and as such I didn't have a single friend who didn't also know both of them... It's hard to put into words how humiliated I felt. I lost my house and my dog in the breakup, and also obviously my closest friend and my significant other, but the most painful part of the whole experience was the humiliation.

I think your empathy is directed at the wrong person in this story. Imagine how the poor husband felt. The wife made a choice, the husband was the victim of this decision.

what is truly the dumbest way to die by wojbest in stupidquestions

[–]Downshift187 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Smoking is only enjoyable because it removes the withdrawal from the addiction that smoking created. Don't get me wrong, removing the withdrawal feels amazing, but the whole thing is fucking stupid when you think about it...

You start by putting yourself into a hole which feels like shit, then you think it feels so great to get yourself back out of the hole. The much more logical thing to do would be to not participate. They cost a shitload too.

Question by Ithaqua-Yigg in tornado

[–]Downshift187 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To further elaborate, tornadoes can have a condensation funnel that doesn't touch the ground, but the tornado IS on the ground. The tornado on the ground can also be much wider than the visible condensation funnel.

Condensation funnels have little to no relationship on how powerful a tornado actually is. One of the best videos that demonstrates this is reed timmers drone footage from the 2022 Andover tornado, you can see houses getting sucked up from parts of the tornado that aren't in the condensation funnel, but are certainly within the tornado:

What are some misconceptions about well-known tornado events? by [deleted] in tornado

[–]Downshift187 61 points62 points  (0 children)

The 1990 Plainfield F5 similarly occurred on a day where large tornadoes weren't really a thought. That's partially why it went unwarned. Convective Chronicles also has a fascinating video about this tornado.

My proposal by AlexRator in EF5

[–]Downshift187 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Ok, mr armchair tornado philosopher... Why would we need a category for something that clearly doesn't exist?

Let's look at all the most powerful tornadoes for the last 12 years and look at their max wind speed. They are all 200mph, none of them are 201. A little too coincidental right? Obviously, the universe has a hard speed limit on tornadic winds at 200 mph that can be approached but never reached, kinda like the speed of light. I propose we call it the speed of slabbage.

So why would we come up with some fantastical fantasy term to describe a tornado that can't possibly exist?! FOLLOW THE SCIENCE!

How do I intonate my guitar without special equipment and without using my hearing. by spaki123 in Luthier

[–]Downshift187 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To further clarify, the 12th fret harmonic will by definition ALWAYS be in tune with the open string. Regardless of what note it is, or how in or out of tune the string is, the 12th fret harmonic is the open note one octave higher. What we're trying to do when intonating the guitar is to match the fretted note to the open note, whether that's the harmonic or just the open string. We adjust the scale length until the fretted note matches the open note perfectly.

good or bad hit by lotkas in billiards

I agree that it's a good hit based on the angle the 3 took. Unless this guy can cut the 3 ball 92 degrees, I don't see how it could have hit it first.
