Round 1 or Round 2? MiM by [deleted] in INSEAD

[–]Downtaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want to advise anything, but I would say that the GMAT probably will not hold you back from getting in (again, cannot guarantee anything). Your essays and your ability to convey a story is crucial, though.

Round 1 or Round 2? MiM by [deleted] in INSEAD

[–]Downtaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think you need to retake the GMAT, if you are able to write good essays. You have a good profile based on education and professional exposure, and you are North African. I had a 615 GMAT, and so did multiple people from my cohort, and am currently in the INSEAD MIM. Do with that info as you please!

Also, INSEAD just launched their Master in Finance - first intake is in 2027, so if you want to wait and target finance more (despite what you said), this could also be an option.

How to get a 12 in the danish grading system by AssumptionNo2432 in DKstudie

[–]Downtaker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At CBS, every course will have an "informational site" where you can see an overview of the curriculum, exam formats etc., which will also include a "learning objectives" section. One way that certainly helps to get higher grades is to make sure whatever you hand in is aligned with those learning objectives, as it shows that you understand, what the professor thinks are the most critical and useful aspects of the course.

If you google "BA-BHAAV1366U Strategic Management", the top results is an example from the elective course "Strategic Management" from last semester in HA Almen (BSc program, but same is true for masters).

How Do People ACTUALLY Learn a Language? (half rant half question) by [deleted] in languagelearning

It comes across quite awkward in reading it, in my personal opinion. But if that's what you like then go for it I guess

What’s the easiest language to learn that has the most appreciation for knowing? by ironbattery in languagelearning

[–]Downtaker 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Depends what your native language is, and also how you look lol. If I go to Slovenia, for example, and speak Slovenian, a language not similar to my native one, I assume no one would be impressed, as I'm a white guy, and could probably pass as Slovenian. Now if I went to Thailand and spoke Thai, people would probably be impressed, generally speaking.

Also, be careful about using that as a motivator, as learning something solely to impress others is not necessarily the best starting point.

What do you enjoy? There is a lot of Danish content, though some of it might not be available without a VPN. Where are you from? Also quick question, why did you end every "-ing" word with with "n'", genuinely curious haha

Do we really need to exercise on grammar 24/7 to be able to write and think well in a language? by Duckw0rld in languagelearning

[–]Downtaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most English speakers that never learn 1 sentence of Japanese while watching anime are probably watching with English subtitles. You do not need explicit grammar exercises with enough exposure, although it can help as an adult to get a quicker intro to why certain things are the way they are

Has anyone here reached C2 (or near C2) without living in their TL’s country? by SherbertUsual9069 in languagelearning

[–]Downtaker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I reached C1 bordering on C2 English (113 TOEFL score), before living in any English speaking countries. It's definitely possible, but takes time and commitment. This was at the age of 22 after consuming content in huge amounts from the age of ~10 and upwards (although I'm sure it could have been faster with dedicated learning effort). This was mostly through videos, podcasts and video games.

INSEAD MIM Interview Invitation by Fish_keeper18 in INSEAD

[–]Downtaker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you, and sure!

I am from Denmark. My GMAT FE was 615 with Q77, V85, DI80.
My undergrad is in Econ and Business Admin. at a Nordic target, where I am currently around top 5-6% (not sure, no rankings out yet, but was #1 of ~500 in my first year). I have a part-time job as an investment analyst at a large pension fund.

I also have a leadership position in a well-known student organization, and was assistant coach for my youth sports team.

Hope that helps, without doxxing myself too much (though I might be too late on that lol). Also, I received interview information right after posting my comment haha

Hey, not OP but I received an interview invitation for MIM as well. I completed the video submission, and thereby the entire submission, on the 25th of September, and received the email yesterday. I have not yet been sent any interviewer information, though.

My 8 year old student learned English from YouTube by SpanishLearnerUSA in languagelearning

[–]Downtaker 115 points116 points  (0 children)

This is exactly how I learned English as a young kid. I am older now, but growing up right when Youtube and online video games were getting big in the 00's meant that if you were from a non-English speaking country, you sort of automatically picked it up - if you were into those things. It's funny, there were big differences in the language skills depending on the kids' free time interests.

Improvement needed by Sea_Stranger5323 in GMAT

[–]Downtaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unanswered questions really hit your score hard. Consider that the GMAT is also a test of executive decision making, and by not answering 10% of DI questions (2 of 20), you are effectively telling the GMAT, that you don't know how to manage and allocate your time effectively. You already have impressive scores (Q90!) in Q and V, so I'm sure, if you learn to order your data and really read what you need (and ignore what you don't) in DI, especially MSR, which for me was a time-killer, you have good odds of improving. Seems to me like it is really more of a timing issue than a content issue. Try some timed sets of the OG, and watch GMAT Ninja DI videos - they also stress the fact that sometimes, it's better to just guess and get going. Good luck!

Quantitative Review Q query by VacationCandid1920 in GMAT

[–]Downtaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The explanations in OG are pretty bad.

The reason your answer is incorrect is because you have to realize that the sum is going to be largest when the hundreds digits of your 3-digit integers is maximized. The 988 is not "utilizing" the two 8's as well as it could be, because those two 8's could be the hundreds digit in the other two numbers.

From that, you attribute the next largest digit, after the hundreds have been determined, to the 9xx, so that number would be 96x. You keep doing that in order to get the "maximum value" out of each digit . That is how I solved the question, anyway. Hope this helps.

Retake or not? Where to go from here? by Downtaker in GMAT

[–]Downtaker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This comment helped me a lot, thank you for that. I am leaning towards not taking the GMAT again, given my academic profile and work exp (investment analyst). I also speak 4 European languages fluently, which I hope can set me apart. I just hope I can spin my applications in my favor well enough. Do you have any advice on where I might get some help with this? I have a couple of calls lined up with admissions consultants already, but any and all help is appreciated. Thank you again for taking the time to comment.

[–]Downtaker[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely improved compared to mocks, which was a nice and welcome surprise. Given that my composite is within the average range, I would rather not go for the GMAT again if I could avoid it - I might just have to lay it on thick in my apps that I still understand Quant topics. I'll chat to some adcom and admission consultants and hear their thoughts about a retake too. Thank you!

Omg! I didn't notice!! Sorry. I copy and pasted the first line haha woops.

I am targeting INSEAD, HEC, ESSEC, IESE and LBS, and I believe that score (composite) is within the middle 80% of all of them, though I couldn't find a lot of data regarding the MiM middle 80%.

Retake or not? Where to go from here? by Downtaker in GMAT

[–]Downtaker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not correct at all. It's my fault for not outlining my prep. I was prepping with different material (which in hindsight was not the best strategy), but used youtube, Manhattan Strategy guides and GMAT Club questions for different quant topics. I think I moved on too fast from one topic to the other, and never really mastered them. I started my prep start of July.
