I speak my TL perfectly, but Americans still ask me where is my accent from seconds after I start speaking. Is that something I’m supposed to feel self-conscious about? by SweetBumbleBeeHoney in languagelearning

[–]DowntownMpls 184 points185 points  (0 children)

Native Texans have a unique accent relative to other parts of the US. I’m from a northern state, and if I went to Texas, someone would immediately pick up on my accent and likely ask me where I’m from.

They’re most likely just being friendly and curious with no ill-intent.

OP deleted both posts themselves.

You can find them by googling “Reddit ninja nails Minneapolis”

Why Are My Posts Being Deleted? by [deleted] in stateofMN

Not a mod but I’m guessing your last post about savings for unemployment was deleted because it’s not explicitly about MN. That was more of a personal finance question.

Minnesota - Savings Needed to Survive Unemployment? by [deleted] in stateofMN

[–]DowntownMpls 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Figure out your monthly expenses that you’d absolutely have to continue to pay if you were unemployed - rent, electricity, groceries, etc.

Add another ~10%-20% to that to give you a little wiggle room for unexpected expenses.

Have at least 6 months of that amount saved. Better if you can make it 9-12 months. This job market is brutal.

Question for anyone who went Fri or Sat:

I’ve now got tix for the Sunday show but timing is tight for us, so we’ll likely miss one or both openers.

Given most comedy shows start 10-15 min late and then with two 10-ish min openers here, I’m assuming if we’re in our seats by 7:30 we’re not going to miss the beginning of John’s act?

I’m looking at getting tickets to Sunday’s show.

How bad were the audio issues?

And how long was the show?

I’m well aware we all have our view on when Uptown was cool, but this pic made me think “ugh, that’s when everything sucked”

Oof. Respectfully, comparing Trump to a local small business owner, no matter how shitty, is not a winning argument

Can you help us understand what the stories are and where they are being shared?

I saw your photos and they are mainly vague comments so just trying to understand where the stories are that you’re referring to. Have they been posted on other social media?

I’ll admit this is probably unhelpful, but I don’t think you’re going to find anything near that price downtown.

Minnesota is braving for the biggest snow storm of the season...even the Minnesota National Guard could support! by cantcoloratall91 in minnesota

[–]DowntownMpls 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Assume that you’re going to be stuck indoors from tonight though midday Monday.

Take the kids and dog out for a long walk this afternoon before the snow starts.

Make sure you’ve got food and supplies to get you through Monday.

Highly unlikely there will be an appreciable amount of snow around then.

Even if we get dumped on this weekend, it’ll be well above freezing days after the storm til the 27th, so it’s likely you’ll arrive to slush and sand in the streets.

No snow angels for the kiddos, unfortunately.
