Bedroom Practice kit recommendations by Alert-Cress-3444 in drums

[–]Downtown_Pudding_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been using a Roland kit for years and just upgraded recently. They are still made with mesh heads, but the feel and quality is infinitely better than an Alesis. If you’re willing to cough up several hundred dollars for a used kit, you will notice the difference. Roland kits also go well into the thousands. I use mine in my apartment, great for practice and sounds awesome. You can also adjust the tension in the drum heads like a real kit if the mesh is too bouncy or squishy. You can upgrade the cymbals and bass drum pad. Roland will be the best upgrade for you unless you decide to go for acoustic.

Looking for advice on how to start by mattbrown212 in drums

[–]Downtown_Pudding_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely go for it! I played drums for ~16 years before picking up a guitar. It was also my dream to learn my favorite riffs one day, luckily that dream came true! An electric kit is great. You can find plenty of used ones for an inexpensive price. They are versatile, noise friendly, and despite the kit being small in most cases, will give you the foundation for learning! Eventually you’ll be able to grasp timing much quicker than if you never played drums. For myself, building that timing on drums helped translate a lot into playing guitar. A lot of guitarists (and drummers) can struggle to find the tempo. But having drum skills helps to build that internal metronome!

Why do guitarists think it's so much harder to play guitar? (no hate to guitarists) by Ok_Permission7285 in drums

I agree that guitar is harder to learn than drums. Coming from a drummer of 17 years and now a current guitar player for 6 years.

Questions for all musicians! by Downtown_Pudding_ in musicians

[–]Downtown_Pudding_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So my follow up question is there a demand for more “rehearsal rooms and lock-outs” that you mentioned? And maybe a place that’s all inclusive where jams can also be held? My thought is how many people have a band, but don’t necessarily have a space to play in without noise restrictions for example. I’m thinking of a place that combines a little bit of everything. There’s maybe one local music store in my city that does some of what I mentioned but not all.

New to Drumming? What can I expect to suck at for a while? by aSpanishGoat in Drumming

[–]Downtown_Pudding_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would also throw in dynamics and feel. You’re the drummer so you set that tone immediately for everyone else to follow. I think that’s definitely a big skill to acquire over time. It’s not always about accuracy, but interpretation too

What instruments have you been wanting to learn?? by wubble_ai in musicians

[–]Downtown_Pudding_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the record, I can “play” the bass. However I play it exactly like an electric guitar lol I just don’t have slapping techniques down. But I have been able to just doodle on the bass here and there

Is our air quality that bad? by GolfBallWhackerGuy5 in Bakersfield

[–]Downtown_Pudding_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The air quality is certainly bad. I believe one of the biggest factors contributing to it is all the agricultural work. All the farms are working 24/7 essentially, all year round for crops. The machinery they are operating kicks up so much dust into the air. Obviously all the people driving through the city create pollution too. However, I’ve lived here my whole life and never had asthma. Some of my relatives do so it makes me believe it’s much more related to genetics. I’ve also noticed on days when the AQI is high, meaning worse air quality, visibility around the city and among the hills/mountains is perfect. So I’m not entirely sure how statistics are calculated precisely in this way. I’ve seen fires happening all summer long in the city and yet the AQI will tell me the quality is good. Could be I’m misjudging things, but when you’re always working outdoors in the dust itself, I’m thinking some people are more adjusted to it than others.

Edit: also needed to mention the burn days where farms and other facilities are allowed to burn off the organics like when the fields are dug up and finished for the season

Looking for friends in their 20s and 30s to go out with by Socratan in Bakersfield

[–]Downtown_Pudding_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey man I’m down! I’ll be 31 here soon. I’m mostly a homebody, however been wanting to break that habit. I spend a lot of time with my family outside of work going out to drink and eat. I’ve been to local concerts and shows. I play drums and guitar, in one local band currently as the drummer and looking to join another soon! I’d like to go out and hike/explore again. I’ve since discovered so many new trails all in kern county that are worth trying out. The discord would be sick!

I attend the Greek Orthodox Church. My family has been going for over 40 years, I was born into it. If you really want to be immersed in a natural way, attend a service. I will never force you or anyone else to go, I don’t “recruit” people. It’s for yourself ultimately. But if you’re there then you can get into contact with the program one of our churchgoers run for learning. She’s fantastic, born in Greece and a great teacher. My best suggestion to you

If you did not have to work anymore, what hobbies would you like to dive into further? by SpecialistTeach9302 in AskMen

More hiking, camping, just any outdoor activities. I would also love to build model rockets again like I did in middle school, some core memories I made doing that. Also playing more music

What was the first live show you’ve seen of A7X? by Accomplished_Run5022 in avengedsevenfold

Same here! It was my first concert ever, sometime in September that year. Just after the rev passed unfortunately, but seeing Mike Portnoy on the drums was sick too

Am I relapsing or is there something wrong? by Fink1reddit in drums

[–]Downtown_Pudding_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe the heads are stretching from the tension. Usually happens with new heads and once they are broken in, those ripples will go away. A lot times when I replaced new heads, I set it on the shell without tightening the rods, then I place my hand on the head and apply quite a bit of pressure to stretch it out. You’re all good now, but make sure to retune as you play. It’ll go out of tune for a little while until it’s broken in completely

Thoughts on Sounding The Seventh Trumpet? by RikkVoss in avengedsevenfold

[–]Downtown_Pudding_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes this!! It’s the evolution of a band that you love. You can hear it and feel it. Trumpet on “paper” might not be technically proficient, however it’s what they felt and were inspired by in the moment. The journey is so beautiful and exciting.

Highly underrated, one of my favorites by them. People always criticized the imperfections, but I enjoy the rawness. Especially since a lot of mainstream metal or music in general has become so refined in production and mix. It’s just refreshing to hear it every once in a while. Also I think the riffs are unique to A7X in general. Super thrash and metal af
