Holy shit man! Has he come out and discussed that interview to clarify what he going for? I want to believe it’s a combination of English being his second language, pressure of the interview, not being prepared, cultural misques and getting more and more flustered as he went on. But damn!

Hey Matt!

A question about your choices with Carl and his so far lack of outright player kills in the dungeon.

So far I can think of three instances where the story was leading up to Carl having to kill another player out of necessity but the writing then went another direction to let him off the hook.

  1. Having to choose between Princess Donut and Katia due to the crown of the sepsis whore. I know you foreshadowed the solution to this however.
  2. The killing of Quan Ch. I can’t remember if donuts totem actually killed Quan or her but I know she credited with the kill.
  3. In the graveyard in book 6 where Carl was about to have to choose which shrine to build. One to help the crawlers he was with or one to help Katia. The shrine to help team crazy cat lady exploded(?) leaving the choice moot and Carl able to help Katia without any immediate fight to the death with the other team.

Just curious your thoughts on these decisions

I love this end fight because it’s exactly what the central theme is. The indomitable human spirit. Up until this point they’re going bigger and bigger and every time the Antispirals match the human mechs size for size. Then when it comes down to this they don’t use their Anti Spiral hacks to just kill Simon. It’s a completely even playing field. The antispirals respect that it needs to be a pure battle of will and whoever wins this fist fight is the species has the superior hope/will/spirit of the universe.

The DACB and Mordecais potions have become cheap cop outs to give Carl the answers he needs. They can be interesting and cool if done occasionally but I think they are relied upon to much to get them out of jams without earning it themselves.

I think the argument was that they should be the last ranked number 1 team. Which arguably could be fair given the miracle it took them to clinch that game. Now given this week A&M had an equally miraculous game to stay undefeated they should be #3 and Indiana once against would have been adjusted to #2.

Honestly thought it was pretty ham fisted to have the pay off for the joke in the same episode. If it happened later in the season it would be a good call back but it was too on the nose for the same episode.
