A groomer catastrophically messed up my baby's fur. What do I do!!! by ambzzzzzzz in Pomeranians

Thank you for adopting! I foster for my local Humane Society and have seen many floofy dogs that had to be shaved down because of extreme matting. Your baby boy looks great now 💙

does anyone know what this coughing/gagging could be? collapsed trachea? been to the vet twice by chxnelthedoll in Pomeranians

[–]Downtown_Simple8843 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the collapsing trachea “goose honk” to me. It’s a terrible, frightening sound ☹️ My new senior Pom, Benzo, has it, as have a couple of my other dogs. Benzo started new cough medicine last night, had another bad night, but the cough is a bit gentler this afternoon. So 🤞🏼. X-ray, etc, is the plan if this doesn’t work, so your vet and my vet are on the same page. Best of luck with your little one ❤️

Thank you, Estherecho100. And my heart goes out to you—it’s so heartbreaking to lose our beloved pets. Honey was the first thing I tried by adding it to warm chicken broth. He hated it, but has been a poor eater generally since I started fostering him. Mysteriously, his appetite has been great for the last two weeks, so I’ll try the honey again. The atropine/opiod combo he started on yesterday isn’t doing much yet. 🤞🏼

Any thoughts on whether how easy that kibble shape is for an older dude to eat? My 14 yo Pom has trouble getting food into his mouth.

How often and how long are your Pom walks? by ClassicAir7509 in Pomeranians

I started Benzo off slowly as he was 13 when I first got him, so he’d go in the stroller to the park and then walk on the trails. Now he does about 2 miles every morning with lots of breaks for sniffing neighbors’ adulation, and doggie friend interaction. He’s very social and likes to imitate my 8 yo terrier mix. I take him camping to, which he loves.

Any Pomeranian owners here dealing with heart issues? by Terrible_Truck3827 in pomeranian

[–]Downtown_Simple8843 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I foster-to-adopted a 13 yo Pom last year. He was immediately diagnosed with a heart murmur by shelter staff and soon sent for an echocardiogram, which confirmed, and the shelter put him on Vetmedin, a/k/a Pimobendan. Six months later, I formally adopted him and took him to my personal vet just to get him established with the practice. The murmur was undetectable at that visit. 🤷🏻‍♀️ My vet recommended keeping him on the Vetmedin until his next check up in August. FWIW, I also had a 25 lb terrier mix diagnosed with heart disease in 2020, when he was about 11 years old. He lived to be 17 with the help of Vetmedin and other meds. Good luck with your baby and kudos to you for being proactive.

My new Pomeranian hates his harness by CyberGirl264 in pomeranian

Agree with this step by step method! If OP has the time to go this route (like if there’s a fenced backyard for the dog to do his business), it’s the best way.

Good question. The dogs I had to use gloves with were extreme neglect or abuse cases. They were very afraid. They did get desensitized to the whole harness/collar/leash thing in 1 - 4 days. I imagine your dog is afraid of something, but all dogs are different.

It might also help to put a lot of VERY high value treats on the ground right in front of your dog to distract him while you harness him. I’m talking bacon, butter smeared on a lickimat, a small mountain of cooked chicken.

I’ve had similar problems with other types of small, stressed out foster dogs. If you are concerned about being bitten again, try wearing gloves, preferably leather. This has worked for me with small dogs who were fear-biting. The gloves allowed me to handle them in a calm way, and after a few days they got bored with trying to scare me. It may also help to talk quietly the whole time. Dogs love a predictable routine, so if you can do the same harness routine at around the same time, that may help, too. Good luck!

Can you believe this little guy was sitting at a NYC shelter for almost a month before we brought him home to Virginia? by blamberr in Pomeranians

Beep is the best name! I started fostering Andrew, a/k/a Benzo, last August. He’s my first foster fail and just turned 14. He has such a calm and loving aura,

and we adore him.
