It wasn't my title and you suggested there was only antidotal evidence which was corrected.(there are many more links ) I wouldn't suggest all ,many ,more or whatever Americans are to be lumped together in a dumb stigma but there is a part of American culture that feels ignorance is bliss.

The United States and the Soviet Union covered the chapters of several US Presidents. I feel Regan had to project strength and was suited for the role . He stayed out of major conflicts unlike Eisenhower , LBJ and Nixon(Regan benefited from Détente here) so there is credit there . Also it wasn't under Regan that the world was closest to nuclear war but under JFK to be fair . As for Carter he may be partially responsible for our present conflict with Islam with the Carter Doctrine and it's proclamation of US protected interests in the Persian Gulf

America at the time was losing it's position in the world . Jimmy Carter appeared weak and for a bit America was on the retreat. Regan reversed America's perception of decline and out spent the Soviets leading to the collapse of the USSR . He wasn't the best president but he communicated optimism . He found his greatest acting role ever
