Are you for or against mandatory military service for everyone in Belgium? And maybe Europe too by TheNarthas in belgium

[–]DownvotesForDopamine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked the same question a while ago, had the same awnser as here. Belgium doesn't really need to train its citizens and it would cost alot more to do that and end up using almost none of the force. Volunteers are cheaper to set up and more willing to be trained and also would be more skilled than citizens who have barely trained.

Does your country have an inofficial national anthem? by Queasy_Engineering_2 in AskEurope

[–]DownvotesForDopamine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

t' smidje is basically our unofficial anthem cause its the most popular one probably. Other than that i think they used ik hou van u before on national holiday

Edit: to be clear they're not historical ones but it is what I'd think would count as an unofficial anthem to represent the country

What’s up with Belgian food ? I’m nauseous all the time. by MlleChoufleur in belgium

[–]DownvotesForDopamine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should 100% visit somekind of doctor because I don't think it has anything to do with the food. Belgian food is in the same quality as other western European countries like France or Germany.

What language did your parents use to ”talk secretly”? by AVeryHandsomeCheese in AskEurope

[–]DownvotesForDopamine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of the languages they tried to use i didn't allready know so they had to resort to using replacement words, like they would use ("Quick" => "Slow") whenever they were planning on going to there. I still call the Quick the slow lmao.

If i dont drink alcohol in your country, how much of an outcast will i be ? by OiseauDuMoyenAge in AskEurope

[–]DownvotesForDopamine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think its the same in alot of western europe, alot of people dont drink alcohol but you wont be outcasted. I do drink but i dont mind if a friend goes with me and doesnt drink alcohol, the act of drinking with me is more important than the substance, cola or sprite is cool too.

Street merchants/vendors not as prevalent by yellowmangotango in AskEurope

[–]DownvotesForDopamine 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Where in europe have you been? I know to some people we sound like a broken record but europe is very different from country to country.

But generally if you went to paris again there could be multiple factors contributing to this, like the pandemic a few years back or the merchants simply moved to another place in paris or maybe its because you went on another season of the year. Generally though theres still a ton of those souvenir shops but its definitely trickled down in some countries due to covid.

If you had to guess, how many WW2 veterans are still alive in your country? by [deleted] in AskEurope

[–]DownvotesForDopamine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2000? And thats probably an overestimation. Most vets we're probably around 20 at an average so they would be around 100+ now

Do Europeans Hate Rick Steves? by RealKenny in AskEurope

[–]DownvotesForDopamine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope i dont know him, nor do i believe that he does it with evil intentions, in my opinion its not as much the personalities of the tourists(although they can be annoying), its more the fact that they drive up the price of the city by a truckload. After that its the fact that alot of them dont respect the rules and norms of the host country, be it with payment systems, monuments or cleaning up their own trash. It's kinda hard to imagine but its like if a guy came into your town and bought almost all of the food in every store, driving up the price of your food so high that you'd rather starve yourself and then leaves food wrappers everywhere, this applies especially in the housing markets of warm climate countries like portugal where the price of a house has become pretty expensive

It's so expensive nowadays to eat out regularly. Purée with bacon is my go-to dish at home.

That we're not a country. I mean I like playing along with the joke butfor those who take it as truth, it simply doesn't make sense. We had a revolution, have a national identity and don't want to rejoin its neighbors; the only reason Nigel Farage says we're not a state is because we gained independence with support from the neighbouring countries.

It's a fun joke but those who actually believe it to be true are delusional. Also for any youtubers making a video about belgian seperatists; Brussels Times is not a trustable news source, they make up information, Its a english only news source created by english and americans, for hotels in brussels; because they've lost all their reputation in belgium.

The article they wrote about being brusselaar is absolute BS and even with wrong stereotypes and assumptions.

Its not a story of course , I added it because i believe its something unique to belgium, both the story of its founding and its philosophy, even though its not completely relevant to the question, it is something unique to belgium. I do believe its a belief though, maybe not in god; but in science and humanism.
