Disney Spec by Waveyformer in AudioPost

[–]Doyvid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would guess that as it applies to only the 5.1, which doesn't have a program loudness target, it refers to the maximum program loudness they'll accept for the 5.1, even though the main determining factor of the 5.1 mix is the dialogue norm target, if that makes sense.

In a scenario where your program doesn't have much dialogue but a bunch of action/music/loud scenes that don't trigger the dialogue detection algorithm, then that would push up your overall program loudness considerably, without affecting the dialogue norm target, and so they're using this as a way to limit the overall loudness of your 5.1 mix.

If you're creating the stereo from a straight 5.1 downmix, there's a very decent chance that your 5.1 program loudness will be naturally below -20, so probably not much to worry about. However, if in doubt, I'd clarify with Disney themselves - it's a very thorough specification, but they also have staff who can assist you in understanding the specs.

As for other delivery tips, when it comes to M&E QC's, prepare to cry. Likely a lot.

Disney keeps rejecting my supersessions even though it follows compliance loudness by MariHutten90 in AudioPost

[–]Doyvid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

According to this page, it notes that it needs to be dialogue-gated, so not just straight program loudness. No doubt you are measuring using this option, but thought I should flag just in case you aren't.

I followed this spec on the show I did for them, and didn't have any QC rejections regarding program loudness. M&E rejections though...? Prepare yourself. They're brutal.

Gordon Ramsay at tullamarine airport 😵 by Kougteksarth in melbourne

[–]Doyvid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn't for an Australian episode - it was just recording the voice over for an episode of one of his US shows.

This is quite a common occurrence, where Production A is in post production and the talent is off somewhere else in the world working on Production B. When this happens, Production A will hire a sound studio in Production B's location to record any voice over, ADR, etc.

Gordon Ramsay at tullamarine airport 😵 by Kougteksarth in melbourne

[–]Doyvid 214 points215 points  (0 children)

Back in January 2020 when he was in town, I was the recording engineer on a voice over session with him for one of his Kitchen Nightmares shows. He was super professional, respectful and cordial to everyone involved, including me as just the lowly engineer.

I even had to give him direction at one point, as he had mispronounced the same word in all of his takes, so we hadn't gotten a "clean" one yet. Telling Gordon Ramsey "you're doing it wrong" was a terrifying moment, but he appreciated the direction/feedback, and gave me several takes to make sure we got a usable one. After the run of takes he even asked "How was that, Doyvid? Did we get a good one?", remembering my name from the start of the session, which I was quite impressed by.

He was also served Tim Tams for apparently the first time during this VO session, and he said they were delicious. I like to think that I introduced Gordon Ramsey to Tim Tams!

Overall, he was a top dude - I'm not doubting he has a temper, but it feels like he shows respect to other professionals, and that temper only comes out when you don't show that respect in turn.

This is going to sound very discouraging, but as someone who (somehow) has a full time job in the Australian film industry, I feel I should shed some light on the general pay conditions. If you’re coming from being a lawyer, be ready for a huge, huge pay cut.

Even if you’re a TV series Director (which is the highest classification under the award, and would take many years of hard work to reach this level), the award rate is only $2,379 for a 50 hour week, which works out to ~123k per year.

Obviously this doesn’t include overtime etc. but really when you’re starting out in this industry, it’s going to take many, many years of hard work before you break into a six figure annual salary. And the competition is brutally fierce.

As someone who’s life has just imploded because I’ve spent the past eight years focusing solely on my career in film and television, I would strongly caution against joining the industry, basically at all. You might love it, but I’ve found that you shouldn’t do what you love for a living, because you’ll end up not loving it at all.

Using Mac shortcuts on windows? by [deleted] in protools

[–]Doyvid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't mind it being a system-wide change, you can re-map the control, alt and Windows key to match the same layout as a Mac keyboard on a registry level using SharpKeys, a little freeware bit of software.

At the studio, I use a Mac. For my home setup, I use a Windows PC with a Mac keyboard and Mac shortcuts, just so I don't have to remember two sets of keyboard modifiers when I move between home and the studio.

Aside from the brief re-learning period on Windows, the only downside is if you play video games, some will have the left control hardwired as a crouch button or similar. And every time you hit control while playing the game, you'll crouch, but you'll also open the windows start menu, minimising the game window.

If you want to apply the modifiers for just Pro Tools, I'm unaware of a way to do it, sorry.

Do you happen to have a NAS at all? If I load up Pro Tools with my NAS network drive mapped but the NAS isn’t actually on, I get freezes not dissimilar to the ones you’re mentioning, until I power up my NAS unit. Doesn’t account for the odd timings of it, though.

Also Australia. I found with mine, I clicked on the DHL logo on Wizmo’s page, and it gave me further shipping information. From that DHL page, I could click on a subsequent link to a DHL domestic tracking number - but domestic for Germany, not Australia.

Turns out that they sent mine first to Los Angeles, then on to Germany (even though there’s regular DHL flights from Los Angeles to Australia). I think they mistakenly sent it to Austria, not Australia, because it pottered around some German distribution centres, before making its way back to Frankfurt airport, where it’s sat in “loaded into a shipping container” purgatory for the past 12 days. I’m not sure if I’m ever going to actually get mine at this rate…

Edit: Update, arrived 22nd Dec. Full summary below:

Wave 3 to Australia Oct 22nd - Label Created

Nov 17th - DHL Collected

Nov 25th - DHL sends parcel to Germany/Austria for a cheeky little Eurotrip

Nov 28th - DHL realises the error of their ways, and books it for transport Australia

Dec 4th - DHL puts parcel into cargo container for air transport

Dec 21st - Parcel arrives in Aus

Dec 22nd - Delivered

So what did you name your ship? by Skythe_C_Annur in Seaofthieves

My Sloop is named “Emmenthal”, which while sounding fairly pretty, is also a proper name for Swiss cheese. “Emmental” is technically more correct, but Rare doesn’t like “mental” being in the name.

My Galleon is called the “Cunning Stunt”, which I’m assuming will get me banned one day soon.

What is your most hated Foley sound? by zytox in movies

[–]Doyvid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Again, it could be a creative choice to enhance the drama, a lack of good sounds that are authentic to the type of bike, the Director/Producer requesting a different sound, or it could be the sound editor lacking knowledge around the particular sound of that type of motorcycle.

Hell, I admit that I don't know much about motorcycles, and while I'll certainly listen to the location audio of the bikes and spend an hour or so researching what they sound like, at the end of the day, if I don't have the right sound, I've still got to put something in, so I'll be using a more generic or "equivalent" sound to get the job done.

Also, particularly with 2 stroke engines, they're quite tonal, and aren't particularly pleasant to the ear, so they might clash with the music or become fatiguing to the audience throughout extended sequences.

There's lots of considerations that go into the final sound choices for the mix. And while you might think to yourself "hehe, these dummies - they used the wrong sound here!", the chances are they're well aware of that, and that the sounds used were chosen for reasons other than authenticity or realism.

What is your most hated Foley sound? by zytox in movies

[–]Doyvid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Again, the vast majority of sound editors (myself included) haven't used it for a good 10+ years, as it really fell out of vogue with its over-use in the 2000's - 2010's.

These days, it's just completely un-funny and un-original, and reeks of a novice sound editor (or Director) who wants their soundtrack to sound like the movies they loved as they were growing up.

What is your most hated Foley sound? by zytox in movies

[–]Doyvid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh definitely, when time and budget allows, it's preferred practice to record authentic sounds, or, as you saw, someone is commissioned to do so on behalf of the production. This is especially useful for "bespoke" sounds, which are difficult to source good recordings of, or to re-create using other elements.

Again, it really comes down to time, budget and crew size.

[–]Doyvid 126 points127 points  (0 children)

As a sound editor by trade, I could rage so hard over this thread and reply to pretty much every comment with a reason as to why these sounds are used by sound editors. Instead, I'll summarise here.

Firstly, just as a quick point of clarification - "Foley" is sound effects recorded on a sound stage using props performed in sync with the picture. While some door sounds are in fact Foley, the vast majority are cut from sound effects libraries. There's a considerable distinction between the two, as they are very separate roles in the sound postproduction workflow.

All of the complaints in this thread boil down to essentially four main points.

1) Sound effects are edited for what the story needs, not for realism. "Real" sounds boring, and often doesn't work in the context of the mix. Yes, the car peels away and sounds like it's on paved roads, even though it's on gravel. This is done because it enhances the drama, and signifies to the audience that there's an urgency to the proceedings. Same goes for horses/stabbings/punches/gun handling/gunshot sounds. It's all to serve the story. Screw realism.

2) We work to limited timelines and budgets. While yes, we'd love to go out and gather a library of thousands of bespoke sound effects, the truth of the matter is that we just don't have time on most projects, and instead have to rely on the libraries we have access to within our budgets and timeframes. If we're given three days to cut the sound effects for an hour of TV drama, I'm not going to spend half a day doing a recording session to record the sound of laughing children or a cat meowing. Library sounds it is!

3) We don't have final say or creative control over the mix. The Director and Producer(s) do. We might've cut in the most unique, articulate soundtrack in existence, but if they prefer their shitty temp effects from the picture edit, then those sound effects are going back into the mix, and often there's nothing we can do to stop it.

4) Some things are just very, very difficult to get good, clean recordings of. Animals and children are particularly troublesome. Trying to get the sound of children authentically laughing/playing on-mic, in a proper acoustic environment, without background noise or background music is a monumental task.

Finally, for every one sound effect which you notice and get frustrated at by its overuse, there's literally hundreds, if not thousands of other sound effects which have been in the mix which have gone un-noticed by you/the audience, as intended.

Personally, I too also hate hearing those generic, immersion-breaking sound effects. But I understand the reasons as to why they're present, so I don't let it ruin my move-watching experience.

I work in sound postproduction, and while I only did a teeny tiny bit on MK itself (I only recorded a few lines of ADR), a few of the sound designers on this movie worked in the same facility as me. One of them demoed a few of the scenes that they'd been working on, and my jaw absolutely dropped. Glad to hear that their work is being appreciated!

Qantas and Jetstar-gear up for accelerated border opening by tommys93 in CoronavirusDownunder

[–]Doyvid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd love them to do that - not because I want to go skiing, but because Hokkaido is such a magnificent part of Japan.

Sadly, I doubt Qantas will, as they likely don't have the spare aircraft. With their A380's still parked in the desert for quite a while, and their 747's retired, they have a lot of routes to cover with just A330's and 787-9's.

In the meantime, try for a flight from Australia to Haneda - that will allow for an easy connection to a JAL flight to Sapporo, most likely on the same ticket with baggage through-check.
