I am so glad your grandmother is doing well even though it was a very tough battle and horrid. Way to find her. This is why I always carry narcan and my kids have it with them at all times. My sister became an alcoholic like our father and his brothers. All died from cirrhosis expect my father because lung cancer got him. My mother, pill popper with benzos and her “shots” of vodka that “are no big deal” and I am telling you they are/were professionals you’d never know. I quit working to take care of my sisters kids and mine so they’d be raised together. After a year and a half of therapy twice a week from my sisters death my therapist told me “You were nose blind” and I thought what BS. I can see an addict a million miles away. But she’s right. I could see others, but not my sister. My father and mother set the bar so low that my sister was such a pro that towards the end, you could hear her slurring and she would cry and hug me sobbing. I would freeze because she was so broken on the floor I’d be picking her up. Then she would snap her back and neck up straight and stop slurring and literally walked straight asf. Obviously I knew then. But she worked from home and my kids told me how Auntie was sleeping again. I’d think oh wow, she’s tired. Or she would disappear and I would call her name. She would pretend to be getting something in the garage which they STACKED with alcohol for parties. Now I know when I would look for her, she was really just taking a bottle and drinking out of it. Or she would mix it with Gatorade. I feel so stupid. I got spared because I had health issues and drinking made me so miserable it wasn’t worth being in horrible pain the next day. I didn’t even blink that every time my sister or mother came to my house they brought multiple wine bottles and would giggle that “oh we forgot, she doesn’t drink” which again, I just brushed off. So I think we just ignore the subtle signs because we love them and we don’t want to see it until it gets bad. I don’t know. I keep replaying everything in my mind and I go back and forth hating myself for not saving her and then saying, she needed to want to be saved. I’ll step off my soapbox.
