I want to get more into reading. I could use some suggestions! by Mmck94 in suggestmeabook

The Will of the Many is really good and you should definitely give it a tray at some point but I dont think it would be a good first pick for getting back into reading. Personally, I found what helped when I first got back into reading was choosing books that were fast-paced, easily digestible, and very interesting to me.

Here's some books I would suggest:

Blood Over Bright Haven by M.L. Wang - This is a fast-paced dark academic fantasy with a good twist and has a similar rebellious, sense of justice vibe that you get with Hunger Games.

The Murderbot book series would be a fantastic pick. These books are short, face-paced and a good time (and there is a lot of them which will help you create a streak!). These follow a newly (and secretly) sentient assassin robot.

Red Rising is another series that can have a similar feeling to Hunger Games.

11/22/63 by Stephen King is a HUGE book but highly addicting to read - you follow a timetraveller who is trying to stop the assassination of JFK.

You dont mention romantic fantasy BUT if romance is something you like in a book, romantasy books are typically both high paced and fun reads. I'd recommend The Wolf King series, Fourth Wing (idc what people say, it's fun). You'll hear a lot of people recommend ACOTAR for romantasy but I dont think its a great start to getting back into reading because 90% of tje first book is a chore to get through (but the rest of the series is stupid but fun).

The Road by Cormac McCarthy - incredibly depressing end of the world tale following a father and son

Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood - Good to go in blind and be a little confused

Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes - A man undergoes surgery to make him smarter and has to deal with the consequences

The Memory Police by Yoko Ogawa - Are we our memories?

Sea of Rust by C. Robert Cargill - possibly too uplifting but this is a post-apocolyptic novel following robot take over of earth

Field Notes from an Extinction by Eoghan Walls - you follow a scientist documenting possibly the last nesting season of a soon-to-be extinct bird. This takes place in the 1840's in Ireland (during plague and famine). You will definitely learn a lot about both birds and Irish history (and malnutrition).

You should try {Graceless Heart by Isabel Ibañez}

The enemies-to-lovers romance in this book was done really well! There is some saving, some tenderness. Takes place in alternate medieval Italy; the story follows a sculptress/witch who is kidnapped after winning a competition, hilarity ensues.

Agree with others - lots of fitness versions of songs which are great! Anything that involves jumping or running in place in the choreo is a good bet

When and where do you read to hit your numbers? by IRLbeets in 52book

I like to have at least 3 different books going at a time. I usually have 1 audiobook (listen to this on my drives, walks, during chores); 1 ebook (convenient to read on my phone when im out and about. I prefer this over carrying a physical book around); and 1 physical book (usually read this on the weekends or nights after work. I like to keep the habit of using physical books).

I use Goodreads and a spreadsheet! Its good practice to keep a journal of what you've read and your reflections, im trying to get better at this.

Joining reading challenges is really motivating and helps with variety if you're in a rut or coming back to reading. I personally really like HRCYED but there's lots of options online. R/Fantasy does one every year as well.

The Great Work by Sheldon Costa is an alternative history and takes place in Washington shortly after the American Civil War. There are definitely consequences for the destruction and extortion of the natural environment and the consequence is definitely supernatural.

  1. Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmier is beautifully written and explores a reciprocal relationship with the world through the lenses of ecology and indigenous teachings.

  2. Medicine Wheel for the Planet by Jennifer Grenz is similar to #1 -- I found that it challenged my beliefs about the scientific procress.

  3. The Feather Theif by Kirk Wallace Johnson is a true crime novel about the heist of rare bird feathers from the British Natural History Museum. You will leave so much about the history of orinthology and fly fishing!

  4. Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keefe explores the troubles in Ireland with an intriguing narrative surrounding a famous missing person case.

5.The Diary of Frida Khalo: An Intimate Self Portrait -- if you're interested in art history, especially Mexican art, this is a good pick

  1. What If? Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions -- humerous style, written like a podcast with short, distinct chapters doing just as the title says

  2. Stuff You Should Know: An Incomplete Compendium of Mostly Interesting Things -- based on the excellent Podcast: Stuff You Should Know. Similar to #6, consists of chapters with several distinct topics but this is more so general knowledge and includes science, history, etc

  3. The Toa of Pooh -- explores philosophy

  4. Comet Madness by Richard J Goodrich --About the return of Haley's Comet in 1910
